Great Compact Laptop For The Price

This is a great little compact laptop for the money, highly portable, sleek looking, solid feeling, with a really nice screen for movies. I gave it only 4 out of 5 stars because the silver on silver keyboard takes some getting used to, and the battery life is a bit disappointing. But over all I recommend this compact laptop for the budget minded.

Best balance of specs and size I've ever owned.

Having a small portable laptop to carry with you through the day is a huge convenience, especially compared to carrying one that feels like a sack of pototoes! It's far more likely you will leave it behind if it's too heavy, as not having the laptop with you when you need it is somehow less of an inconvenience. But small, portable laptops have a tendency to lack performance, making them frustrating to use, unless you spend a LOT of money to get upgraded specs. It's actually less expensive sometimes to get the specs in a larger laptop than a smaller one. I have to say that this Asus Zenbook has achieved this balance better than any portable laptop I have ever owned, including other Asus models. I've tried Chromebooks, I've tried small-screen Windows ultra-portables, and I would have even considered a Macbook Air if not for the price. Everytime, the performance was disappointing. Here is a quick summary of what I love and don't love on this laptop. What I LOVE * Very thin and very lightweight * Comfortable keyboard (keys are not cramped, yet they found room to fit PgUp and PgDn dedicated keys) * Backlit keyboard (with 3 different brightness levels, or Off) * USEFUL functions added to the F1-F12 keys. There is the usual brightness and volume control, but also a button to disable the trackpad, adjust the brightness of the backlight, and even a user-lock button, convenient if you need to quickly lock the computer to walk away. * THREE USB ports (one USB2, one USB3, and a USB-C). Also has a full-size HDMI port to quickly hook to a second display or projector. * LONG cord on the power cable - Why do manufacturers assume that a portable laptop is automatically closer to a power outlet? * Beautiful 1080p, minimal bezel screen. This is a matte screen, so there is no reflection, yet it's still clear and bright like a glossy screen would appear. * SSD is upgradable, which is good because it's only 256 GB. Just be prepared to know what you're doing to get it open - it's clearly designed to deter users from opening the case. * This laptop has dedicated graphis (2 GB)! On a laptop of this size??? Awesome! * The speakers are on the tapered part of the underside, so the sound is directed downward. I am not normally a fan of this design, but these speakers are surprisingly good. What I DON'T Love * No memory upgrades - This model comes with 8 GB, and that's all it's ever going to have. This is just a poor decision and the wrong area to sacrifice in PC design with today's technology demands. However, I was able to open and use Affinity Photo (Photoshop competitor) with some large files containing 30+ layers, and the laptop never even stuttered. * Backlit keys are not lit evenly. If you are using this in almost complete darkness, they keys are easy enough to make out, but if there is even a little ambient light, it becomes obvious that the ligth source is concentrated and not centered. In normal lighting conditions, it's best to turn the light off. Fortunately, that is very easy - just hit F6. * No numberpad. This is an automatic sacrifice on a laptop of this size, but if you spend time number-crunching, this could be a problem unless you utilize a external one. The USB2 port is on the right side, so if you use a USB numberpad, you can plug it in close to where you place the device and not sacrifice a faster USB port. The average users of this laptop is likely looking for a small portable laptop that is easy to carry around and can handle running multiple applications at once. It's not a computer for heavy photo and video editing, but it's nice to know it can handle some light editing (nice bonus!). But if is the size you are looking for, this is a very capable computer.

      Dear JamesBo,

Good to know that the laptop is ok for your computing needs.

The 8GB RAM is enough to run daily computing without compromising system performance. The SSD drive is upgradeable if you need more storage space.

Yes, no other color options is available for the particular product.

This review is for the Asus Model Number Q407IQ-BR5N4 ZenBook 14 inch full HD Laptop, with the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U 6 core CPU with 8 GBs of DDR4 2400 RAM and a 256 GB M.2 NVMe SSD. This laptop has integrated AMD Vega 8 graphics and dedicated Nvidia GeForce MX 350 Graphics. It does have a backlit keyboard. It has HDMI out, Ethernet plug, one USB 2.0, one USB 3.0, one USB Type C 3.0 plug, built in webcam and microphone and a micro SD card reader. This model does not come with the track pad that converts to a digital number pad, nor does it come with a carrying sleeve.. Lets start with the really good. This is a great performing 6 core Ryzen CPU. It boosts to 3.9 ghz on all cores for intermittent demand. Under full stress such as Furmarks CPU burner, it holds 3.3 ghz for a long stretch and then settles in to 2.9 ghz, which it will hold continuously. And the great part is that it will also do it while on battery only, unlike many Laptops that throttle the CPU when on battery. Anyone who buys it for internet or office apps are going to love how quick it is. It has great 6G wireless. First wireless PC that I have used that nearly equaled the 450 mbs/sec download that I get on my ethernet connected desktop. Naturally it has Bluetooth also. The good is that it has a really good quality 1920 x 1080 IPS screen and that the speakers are really quite good for a small laptop. The screen real estate is a full 16:9. The way that it opens up the viewable area reaches down to the top of the keyboard. Also when the screen is opened it slightly raises the back of the laptop, which gives a slightly more ergonomic angle to use the keyboard and also allows airflow beneath the laptop for airflow. Even under my extended CPU stress tests, it never got hot. The fans did speed up, but they never reached an objectionable noise level. Under normal usage it is really quiet. The could have been better, is the backlit keyboard. It has 3 brightness levels and really is alright in pitch darkness, but there is little contrast between the key color and the key labels and the backlighting is not a lot of help in a poorly lit room unless you are looking straight down on the keyboard, although the keyboard does have a really good feel and the tactile sensation from the keys is very good. Regarding the trackpad, I use a mouse with my laptops, but I thought it was quite normal as trackpads go. There is one bad, and I can't imagine what Asus was thinking, but the webcam is awful, at least mine is. If I received a bad webcam, someone please make a comment on my post. The quality is .9 megapixels, but even at that, on the 14 inch screen it should be better than what I experienced. If you buy it, note that the camera is turned on and off with the F10 key, which is a nice feature not having a live webcam for hackers to spy on you. Okay, the webcam aside, this is a nice looking compact, easy to carry, really nice performing little laptop, with a great display and decent sound. It is not a graphics powerhouse, but it is more than sufficient for basic personal video and photo editing. It will handle low demand games. As a benchmark, it ran 23 FPS at full HD on high settings using Furmarks GPU stress test and Furmarks test is comparable to high demand games at high settings. Be aware that the RAM is not upgradeable, so if you need more RAM, buy the model with the RAM you need. The M.2 SSD is upgradable, but you have to remove the bottom cover of the laptop to do it, which isn't that hard. I found it to be really a nice little laptop. I really struggled with my decision to get it as I usually have 17 inch laptops. I found this 14 inch Zenbook to be a really great visual upgrade from using my phone to read my mail and do my online research at the kitchen table and have the convivence of Windows 10 and a real browser. So as long as you aren't hoping for a gaming behemoth or video rendering monster for 700 dollars you should really like this for everyday normal usage. Oh, and did I mention that it is really quick.

The ASUS Zenbook 14" laptop has many great features: - Screen is a nice size for a smaller footprint laptop. Nice full HD resolution. - Seems like the case is built very tough - Good size hard drive which is SSD and very fast and quiet - Nice size and weight for carrying around alot in a bag - Fast processor that doesn't seem to heat up the bottom of the case - Nice graphics card that does all I need it to do. Seems enough for some light gaming. - 8 GB RAM is good enough - Web Cam works great and has a great image and Windows Hello always worked every time for me to log into the laptop. There are some things that could be improved: - Screen is very good but not bright enough to use in very bright light setting or outside. I had to turn on the high contrast setting in Windows 10 to make it work there. For most uses it is fine. - The keyboard is very nice and easy to type but the markings on the keys are not easy to see when working in low light settings and the back light on the keyboard does not seem to go any brighter. - The included software seems light for this price range. Overall a great beginner laptop that has enough horsepower to last several years without another upgrade.

Great laptop for the cost. Fast, expandable memory. Great for video calls, lightweight and charges quickly. My only sad face for it, is the hinge connecting to the screen broke after 3 years of use. I've noticed stress marks on the back of the screen but didn't think it would be a problem.

      Dear RobSiegel,

We certainly understand the inconvenience if you received a product that is different from what was advertised. Normally, this kind of issue issue resolved by the seller.

If the laptop will no longer boot up, it's just black screen, or will not charge the battery, please do the following.

Verify if the AC adapter is connected properly from the laptop to a known good power outlet or AC source. Try another power source. Try to press and hold down the power button to shut it down completely, just in case laptop is not in hibernate mode, wait for at least 10 seconds then power on. Please wait, if the system is applying updates in the System Registry, it will black screen temporarily. If it still black screen after a few minutes, at least 10 minutes, please repeat the power cycle process again. Also, please try to disconnect the power cable and let the unit drain for 24 hours to clear the memory. This will reset the hardware to default settings. After doing this, please reconnect your AC adapter then power on the unit.

I can't believe the speed with which this laptop boots up. From power on to fully booted it took me less than 9 seconds. In a very compact package, the laptop offers very solid performance for video streaming and office tasks. The 14" display is set in a very narrow bezel, giving the laptop a very compact footprint, much smaller than other 14: laptops. The resolution is full HD and the image is very clear and bright. Construction is very solid, although the shell is plastic there is no flexing or creaking. The laptop includes an infrared three-D web camera capable of using the Microsoft Hello software and facial recognition to sign on to the laptop. It seems to work well and enables the fast booting. A good, solid laptop with very good performance.
