Fast, Efficient, Sturdy, Portable -- It's a Winner

Thin and light laptops, or ultrabooks, often require compromises to maintain their svelte, portable forms. You'd often sacrifice battery life or processing power -- sometimes both -- in order to have the lightest, most portable machine. No so anymore: the last few years of development have given us a wealth of choice for computers that are both very portable and very powerful. ASUS' latest entry in this hot segment is the Zenbook S 14, sporting the latest and greatest Intel Core Ultra 7 Series 2 processor. With non-Intel processors making many strides in power and efficiency it has taken Intel a few development cycles to fight back in a meaningful way, and this latest processor makes some lofty promises about efficiency and battery life. Combined with ASUS' stellar design I was excited to see what kind of experience the Zenbook S 14 had to offer. Unboxing the Zenbook was the first hint that this laptop was a truly premium product. ASUS managed to carefully pack everything in fully-recyclable materials that both looked and felt premium while also easily collapsing for recycling. The entire package felt sturdy and as well designed as the laptop itself, with only one small piece of plastic wrap in the entire package. Well done, ASUS! At first glance I was immediately struck by how beautiful and well-constructed the Zenbook is up close. From the "Ceraluminum" lid to the machined aluminum elsewhere, this is one pretty machine. I also immediately noticed how solid the whole machine looked and felt. It's weighty without being heavy, and there's absolutely no flex in the chassis, unlike some other ultra-slim machines I have experience with. I am seriously impressed with the build quality here: it's Apple MacBook level, if not even a cut above. The beauty and solid construction continue when you open the Zenbook, with a large, smooth trackpad, finely-milled vents (they really are as neat as they look in photos) and smooth, responsive keys. The real star of the show, however, is the screen, and what a screen it is. If you haven't yet experienced an OLED laptop (and even if you have) you'll be wowed the second you turn the ASUS on. It's bright and colorful, with nearly-invisible pixels, instant response and a high refresh rate that makes everything look oh-so-smooth. What's more, it's a touchscreen! Even after a week of using the Zenbook S 14 I still love just looking at the gorgeous display. ASUS absolutely knocked it out of the park here. Press the power button and you'll notice something else: speed. Intel makes some big promises about both power and efficiency with their latest chips, and the power was evident from the get-go. The initial Windows setup process was speedier than I've experienced elsewhere, and bootup from sleep or hibernation is noticeably quicker than I'm used to. Apps open quickly and response to inputs all across the user interface is very quick. Opening files is fast, too, with the large 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD reading and writing at high speeds. Even without detailed benchmarking every interaction with the Zenbook S 14 feels smoother and just a tic faster than I've come to expect from Windows machines. Downloading and installing the latest apps was a breeze, webpages load quickly, videos play smoothly... nothing I've thrown at this machine seems to have even made it break a sweat. Even when demand is high, the Zenbook responds gracefully, with one of the quietest fans in the business. My other ultra-thin Windows machine spins up the fans within a few minutes of booting up, and ratchets them into high gear frequently. The ASUS is nearly silent, keeping the fans spinning at such a low speed that you have to put your ear right up to the vents to hear them. Under high load the fans do spin faster, but the noise never becomes intrusive. The cooling system isn't something many people think about, but it has a direct impact on the usability of the machine. ASUS nailed it here, with quiet cooling power, lots of vents (that also look really neat and prevent crumbs and whatnot from falling into the machine) and the ability to keep the Core Ultra 7 processor happily humming along. This leads me to the other important piece of the power vs. efficiency fight: battery life. I was cautiously optimistic based on Intel's focus on efficiency with their Series 2 chips, and I'm happy to say my modest expectations have not only been met, but exceeded. This is the first Windows machine I've used in a long time that I can confidently say has all-day battery life under typical workloads. It's been my experience for years that Windows machines just won't last as long as Apple laptops, and that's often borne out in instrumented testing as well, especially with Intel chips of the last 5 years or so. The ASUS Zenbook S 14 puts that preconception to bed for me. The battery just goes and goes with my typical workload of internet, email, word processing and instant messaging. Moreover, the Zenbook is able to maintain battery life when asleep or hibernating, a hidden power draw I've often experienced with other Windows machines. Close the lid of the Zenbook and come back to it a day or two later and the battery percentage will be nearly the same, usually only 1 or 2 percent lower. Activate the presence sensing enabled by the camera array and the Zenbook will turn the screen off when you leave the machine, turning it back on when you return. Neat and effective for power and privacy alike. All told, efficiency is another win here for Intel and ASUS with this latest ultrabook. I'm also pleased to see the latest security and AI features on board. Specifically, the Windows Hello camera array works great, unlocking fairly quickly in a variety of lighting scenarios and enabling secure access to applications, password managers and passkey integration with popular platforms. Video call quality is good but nothing exceptional; the camera does have Windows AI enhancing features, which work well now and have the possibility of improving with time. Although I'm not a huge AI user it's important to be future-proofed, and the Zenbook is Windows Copilot+ certified, meaning it'll gain access to all the AI features coming down the pike. I'm all about future-proofing and ASUS has done a good job here. No computer is perfect, though, and I do have a few quibbles with the Zenbook. While springy and very responsive the keyboard is a bit on the mushy side, and the keys bottom out pretty easily because of their limited travel. It's taken a bit of getting used to, but overall it's a serviceable keyboard. Wow is the backlight bright, though; even at it's lowest setting it's a bit on the blinding side, especially if you're viewing the keys at a bit of an angle, where the LEDs are visible. I'd love to see ASUS release an update that allows greater dimming of the keys. Keyboard aside, the touchpad and touchscreen are great, with fantastic response and very good recognition of multi-touch gestures. ASUS really touts the 4 Harmon-Kardon tuned speakers in their marketing materials, but in use I've found them to be just okay. They do offer a discernable surround sound effect and can get plenty loud, but they are a little on the lifeless side for me. I don't use my computer speakers for much more than video calls and the occasional YouTube clip and these are very adequate for this. I'd recommend headphones or external speakers for any serious audio use, though. My final nitpick with the Zenbook S 14 is the port selection. I'm glad to see a Type-A USB port in addition to the two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, but I wish ASUS would have included one USB-C port on each side of the machine, so you could charge or attach peripherals on the left and right. As it is, you're stuck using the left side for charging and any USB-C devices. While there's an HDMI port, there's no SD card reader to be found. I'd personally give up the HDMI for a card reader and/or a USB-C port on the righthand side, but as it stands you're going to need an adapter or dock to connect everything you might want to use. I was happy to see the ASUS play well with my USB-C monitor/docking station combo, though, without any special settings needed. Overall, the ASUS Zenbook S 14 is an impressive machine in nearly all regards. It's beautiful and very well-built, feeling solid enough to travel all day for many years. It packs a gorgeous, high resolution OLED touchscreen and all-day-plus battery life into a svelte chassis. Intel's very latest chips are plenty fast for most any task and are seriously efficient, too, both in use and in sleep. ASUS saw fit to include the latest AI and security features, which sets this machine up for a long working life. While not perfect, the keyboard and trackpad are very, very good, and the included ports should meet the needs of most folks with a minimum of adapters or docks. All told, I'm seriously impressed by ASUS' efforts here. The Zenbook S 14 absolutely earned five stars and is an easy recommendation for anyone looking for the latest and greatest Windows machine.
