Probably the best sound amplifiers I've tried

I've got hearing loss from my time in the military, as well as tinnitus. So I can get high end professional hearing aids for free whenever I feel like it since I'm a disabled vet and the VA would cover it. But I haven't, since my problems are more specific to certain frequencies and thus don't make me as much hard of hearing, as simply having a difficulty in some situations to be able to clearly pick up conversation and such. Especially in my left ear in a bar or restaurant. I always sit with people to my right. But I thought I would give these a try out of curiosity, since I had tested other similar products in the past with very poor results. The charging case is smaller than even the oldest air pod cases, so it's definitely portable and easy to carry. The hearing aids themselves proved very easy to insert and remove, with the small plastic protrusion, what they call the "pull wire." And if you've ever used ear pods for music you'll be right at home with how they sit in the ear canal. They provide four different sized ear domes, so everyone should be able to find something to fit. They default to the 3rd volume setting, but to me that's just way too loud so I immediately dropped it to the first volume level. I had some squealing feedback initially putting things in, until I learned to try to hold them with my thumb and finger as high up on that pull wire as I can, which also helps prevent accidental button pressing when you're inserting. Still a moment of feedback sometimes when removing or inserting but it's minimal and not anything I haven't seen on other similar products. The immediate weirdness was the amplification of everything. My keyboard right now, while typing this, sounds so much more obtrusive than it does without them. But since these are amplifying everything, that's expected. Everything loses any bit of bass frequencies and becomes a higher frequency tinny sounding thing. The other thing to get used to would be talking. Hearing yourself as if you're speaking into a microphone and so hearing yourself both internally through bone conduction as well as the amplified voice from "outside." Music is quite different, for obvious reasons. This gives everything a "tinny" sound. Totally expected with such a small device. And it's odd FEELING the bass (I have two subwoofers) but not really HEARING it. There are different listening modes, that are separate from the volume settings. And I can see it's going to be a process to really fully test each in different environments. But over the last few days I did a bit of sampling, and most really did not give me much of a change in sound other than the TV setting that I'll detail below. You quick press the button that is on the end that protrudes from your ear to change volume - 1 beep is lowest, 5 beeps is highest. You LONG press the button to change mode - 1 beep for conversation, 2 for restaurant, 3 for TV, 4 for outdoors. And that's really my biggest concern. I wish there was a delay when inserting these, BERORE the volume button would be functional. Too often, no matter how careful I am, I'm inadvertently hitting that button and after it's in I have to cycle through ALL of the volumes again to get back to volume 1 for both sides. I'm sure with more constant use I'd improve though at not hitting that by accident. The "TV" setting has a constant hiss, but it DOES hear the conversations from the TV better than the other modes. But that hiss is annoying, like an old cassette tape and the tape transport hiss you'd get between songs, with an almost falling rain sound quality added on top of it. But having one on TV, and the other on something else, only the one with the TV setting had mostly consistent voice pickup. The other one missed some of the words and skipped in and out. The TV setting was the only one that really brought the voices consistently. I was actually surprised enough beyond the hiss. If I were to continue to use these, I'd absolutely be able to lower the volume on my system. I do wish there was a passthrough unamplified level though just so you could compare it and see how much of a difference this makes. The case does NOT charge, which is disappointing. But they do have a Pro version that includes that feature. It's also interesting to note there is no "sleep" or "standby" mode with these. They are either ON (once pulled out of the case) or OFF (once replaced IN the case). If you take them out and just set them down somewhere, they will remain on. There is no way to turn them off short of getting them in the case. Which makes sense, since otherwise I can see the annoyance of randomly having to touch the button again to wake them out of sleep mode or something if you wear them for a long period of time. I know Audien calls these "Hearing Aids" but they are not hearing aids, but simple sound amplifiers. True hearing aids can be tuned for the frequencies in which you are deficient, so that you can improve the quality of what you hear. Which is why there's the higher cost, testing, apps you can use on the phone to change settings, etc. These are simply going to amplify EVERYTHING, which can get to be a bit frustrating depending on your needs, and in some circumstances can make matters worse if you're not careful. I haven't worked up to keeping these in all day long yet since my ears still aren't used to them, but I have managed to make it about 7 hours and the batteries never had a problem. But I have tested other systems in the past that did the same as these, simply full blown amplification. And I will give these all the credit there is. Compared to the other similar products I've tried in the past out of curiosity, inexpensive ones like this, these are far and away the best of the bunch. The comfort, the ease of insertion and removal, ease of changing volume or modes - nothing else was anything like these. And for people who can get by with just the amplification, these are going to be about the best experience that they will find out there.

So I've had the pleasure of using the Audien Atom 2 OTC hearing aids for about a week now and I have had a mostly positive experience with these. I'll start with the negatives things I've experienced. The most annoying thing about them it that for some reason they tend to "chirp" and screech sometimes. Mostly when I am first putting them into my ears and when trying to adjust them or press the tiny button to changes modes and volume. My only other complaint is that the button you need to press to adjust volume and other settings is small and hard to find sometimes, and yeah I end up making the hearing aids screech obnoxiously loud. That being said.. as a person who suffers from mild to moderate hearing loss. These have been pretty cool to use when in casual conversation settings. Ive felt kind of bad lately because I'm constantly asking people to repeat themselves or I hear people say one thing when they said some thing else. The Audien Atom 2 are very discrete, and they've helped me hear better. I haven't tried many other hearing aids in the past, I don't know if it's just these that sound like this but voices sound a little artificial? If I had to describe it, I would say its like sounds / voices are amplified through a hollow chamber heh. But I suppose that's how these things just work, I imagine it is hard to mimic a human ear. All in all, I am pleased with these hearing aids and carry them with me to wear in situations where I need them. Battery life is excellent, the charging case keeps them charged for days at a time and they come with a lot of accesories to keep them clean. Would I recommend these? I am going to say yes. Especially if you just suffer from mild or moderate hearing loss. They are affordable, easy to use and discrete. Most people dont notice them as I'm walking around in public.

Audien 2 hearing aides are very good hearing aides. My husband loves them. However the charge doesn’t make it through the day. About every 4 hours it needs charged. Needs to come with second battery

Audien Hearing - Audien Atom 2 OTC Hearing Aids. I’m discovering the changes that come with aging. And with some resistance I’m making an effort to accept them and find solutions. With the help of an audiologist and some online testing apps, it seems I have moderate hearing loss that could be addressed with OTC hearing aids. These Audien Aton 2 devices are a very reasonably priced solution to my hearing deficit. As I have aged, conversations in real life or on television appear to be deliberately designed to frustrate me. Mumbling, indistinct pronunciations, and rapid-fire speech are all common features. Restaurants in the past half-century have transformed from quiet, intimate settings into noisy, clashing environments that seem to challenge the very notion of sharing a personal moment. The Audien Atom 2s are interesting and inviting to try because of what they don’t require of the end user. No phone required. So, of course, no App to master and no testing ritual to perform. These are simply highly modifiable individual ear amplifiers. You can control volume in 5 steps. Additionally, there are four sound contours to address specific environments or problems you might face. What do they feel like? The earbuds are very small and smooth but handling them is done confidently with the post extending from the outer end and the buds orientation in your ear is not at all fussy. While they are slightly asymmetrical in shape, they will work no matter how they sit in your ear. Go with what’s comfortable. The four size earbud domes/sleeves are likely to accommodate most ears. Ear comfort was never a problem for me. I’ll elaborate in the next section, but in my use of the earbuds I elicited a steady stream of whistle and squealing when I touched the earbuds to place them in my ear. I also concluded that in these early days of usage, it was better for my nerves to adjust the volume (with button presses) while I was holding each earbud near my ear, but not in it. Management of the volume and sound mode features requires some practice, but this is no different from my favorite music earbuds and headphones. Relying on button presses at each ear can be tedious. Firstly you need to avoid inadvertently invoking setting changes when placing these earbuds into your ear or adjusting how they sit. And then managing short presses for volume changes which are sequential can be frustrating. Similarly, changing sound modes requires longer (3 second) presses. Volume changes are indicated by the number of BEEPS while sound mode changes are indicated by the number of BOOPS. I suspect readers will find these descriptions amusing and cute. Users may eventually agree but it is a test of patience. While the beeps are easy to hear, even before inserting the earbuds, the boops are more subtle and the earbuds must be inserted. Practice will certainly help. What do they sound like? Here’s where the simplicity of the Audien Atom 2 approach is rewarded. Once placed I’m my ear I was immediately rewarded with clear, amplified voices even at the lower volume levels. Voices seemed to jump out of a quieter background in the conversation setting. I’m not sure what audio engineering is involved but the effect brings voices closer and pushes background noise further away. It’s effective. Issues related to environment and indistinct conversations are neatly solved. Everyday interactions while working or shopping are relieved because voices are now easier to hear, and background noise is suppressed. You can turn yourself into a bat-like super listener of distant conversation if you’re motivated, but voices in the foreground nearby can then become overwhelming. The rest of us, after extended sessions familiarizing yourself with the changes to your hearing these Audien Atoms bring, will benefit from the improvements. With the earbuds set to conversation, listening to the TV becomes a bit odd. That nifty voice volume emphasis is now a bit annoying because it accentuates some volume pulsing. The Audien Atom appears to dial that effect down considerably in the TV mode, so that’s a setting worth changing to while watching TV programming. I haven’t tried the restaurant settings in that environment and I am curious about what Audien has modified. Not everything about the features and simple amplification is useful. Enjoying a musical listening session is not that enjoyable. Tonal balance leans towards the treble. Back to my favorite consumer earbuds for that. SUMMARY: I think the Audien Atom 2 is well worth trying for anyone attempting to improve their modest hearing deficits at a reasonable price. I approached this as an experiment with practical expectations. I agree with the Audien guidance that you will want to start slowly with your use of the earbuds. The results are immediately apparent, and the improvements are exciting. But shorter usage sessions will help you adjust to the vast amount of new auditory information. Using a visual metaphor to explain the effect, the increased stimulation is probably like increased color intensity and increases in contrast and brightness. What starts out great can become too intense and result in eye strain. I like the improvements I get using the Atom 2s, but intermittently, for now. Audien has done a nice job providing a very reasonable hearing loss solution.

Decent Entry Level OTC Hearing Aids

These are really decent hearing aids. They were really easy and quick to setup. They fit snugly in a very compact charging case making it easy to continually keep them powered by simply charging them overnight while sleeping. The package has everything needed to properly maintain (including cleaning), charge, and use the hearing aids, nothing extra is needed. The instruction manuals are extremely detailed making this very easy. Overall, they work very well for being entry level hearing aids and almost as well as ones with more features. A huge option (especially since they're entry level) is the ability to adjust the settings for each hearing aid individually, which is great with different levels of hearing loss in each ear. It also comes with different size tips like earpods so you can find the perfect fit and to maximize their use and comfort. The sound is a little artificial sounding though which is the only reason I can't give it a full five stars. Overall, these are very good entry level hearing aids.

Good for what it is. Not a medical substitute.

I suffer from ringing ears after years of loud music and feedback from amps. This is not a substitute for a real medical device. But, it does help you in the mean time to do a few things. 1. assist in getting your hearing to be slightly louder 2. get you use to wearing a in ear device 3. let you know what type of hearing loss you have (low, mid, hi frequency loss) 4. give you a idea how to change the sound enchantments for different areas (crowds, quiet, low volume, etc). This is good and does hide much better than other hearing aids I have tried in the past. Smaller and more feature rich than my current device. It does not connect via bluetooth to control settings, so for this price range it is not surprising. My biggest complaint is that it starts out at full volume everytime I take them out of the charging case. Which makes it hard to not hear feedback before you insert them in my ears. Also you have to make sure they are fully seated in the charging areas as the lid will still close if they are not and will not charge. Mine kept beeping until I figured out they were still on. Here are the contents of importance: 1. hearing aids 2. charging case (aids last about 18 hours depending on volume level) that will charge the aids about 2 times. 3. instructions 4. wax guards so even with the lack of features, bluetooth app control, or memory for last setting, I would still get them for myself or someone else that needs hearing help and can't afford real hearing aids or awaiting for a proper medical appt.

Audien Atom2 Rechargeable OTC Hearing Aids are an option for anyone who needs help with hearing loss. They have 24-hour use at a single charge. They come ready to use right out of the box and come with six extra pairs of buds a wax guard kit a cleaning brush power adapter USBC charging cable and a charging dock. It works very well and does assist in your hearing, but I find that I'd appreciate a set measured and sized to fit individual hearing aid needs, which would be a better picture for my aunt. I got this for her, and she still likes them, though. They use an A2 chip, so they do have a very clear sound quality. There are two microphones for hearing aid modes, and it also has a hearing loss level. The pro series I've read also has UV cleaning and noise cancellation as well. For anyone looking to get some more features that will improve the personal experience. If you have a loved one or yourself in search of a little hearing assistance this is definitely one to check out.
