    I have and use a five speaker system. I plan to buy a sub-woofer (stand alone) to go with it. The sub-woofer I have is perfectly good but will not play with this receiver because it does not have a built in amplifier. Receiver has four HDMI input ports plus one output HDMI port to transmit signal to TV. So lots of options.
