Problems with unit from the beginning. First doorknob could not calibrate lock. Tech support recommended returning for a new unit. Problem with second into stopped opening after 7 lock and open. Returned second unit and decided to stay with the fashion way of opening door.

Doesn't operate remotely out of the box. Othwerise works okay.

After doing my own research and not taking the word of 2 different BB agents, this product is the 2nd Gen lock. If you're looking for the 3rd gen, stay away from this one. I'm going to return the 2 that I bought and wait another 6 months for the prices to drop.

Got this installed but could not get it working by my phone. Spent over an hour with tech support they came to the concluesion it was defective and needed to be sent back. Just having bought it it's going back to Best Buy. My other August locks work great.

Nothing but problems with this lock. Terrible purchase. Several issues with this unit including being locked out. Now I have a complete failure after 7 months and I have to go back and get my receipt for them to send me a new one.

Smart locks are going to change the way we live. They are the most exciting, useful and promising part of the "smart home" eco-system. I believe that they will do to locks what digital cameras did to film. Installation is very simple: not many parts, very clear instructions. I had to get new screws for my Emtek lock (the company told me that this is very uncommon with Emtek locks) since mine were too long. The lock connected quickly and works nicely in tandem with the August doorbell cam which bridges it to the world via my home wifi (it does this automatically). The things that have been very valuable: + Today I unlocked the door remotely from my office for the babysitter and kids (she forgot her key). Saved lots of time and trouble for everybody. + The door can be set up to unlock automatically when I return home. I love not having to fumble for my keys and put bags/kids/sporting equipment down to unlock the door. + The door can also auto-lock when I leave the house and exceed a certain distance. I don't worry about leaving the door unlocked by mistake. + Being able to grant and later revoke access to people is awesome. I never liked giving the keys to all sorts of people who may lose them (my kids did all the time). + Unlike other locks (I have a keypad type lock on a side door), this lock isn't visible on the outside so it keeps the original look and feel of the lock I chose to go with the house's external style and color. The software isn't yet perfect but it's been getting better and better and it already does everything it needs to do.

Spent over an hour after I had this installed trying to readjust to get the mechanism to fully engage the lock. Kept getting an error. Returned and got the Keno which woaks great.

This is the worse electronic product I have ever owned. The customer service from August is horrible too. Wait for a product from company with a proven record like Yale.

Read a lot of bad reviews yet still opted to buy because the idea of what it had to offer intrigued me. Apple may be different but it did not work with android.

Does not work if you lose electricity and then it comes back on it has to be manually reset a problem If nobody is home not useful at all

Got the family locked out over 3 times and 2 out of three we end up getting in through the back door. One time waited over 10 min to work.

Had to keep returning to my rental to recalculate the lock. Tech support was not helpful. Finally gave up.

The new August Smart Lock is simple, elegant, and easy to use. From opening up you can see the work and creative design that was used to make this product. Technology that cares about presentation is something I love. Straight from taking it out of the box to setting it up you get a ease of use feel. The directions are very clear and the diagrams help guide you to the perfect setup. I never was in question while setting it up. It's amazing that you basically only need to remove 2 screws. Super easy! App set up was also a breeze. The firmware update took a few minutes, as to be expected, but once that was done I was on my way. The system to checking that the lock is working with the app give you the information that you don't need to use the app if you want to manually unlock or lock the door. Once it's all set up I was able to easily add my roommate as an owner as well. He wasn't home and was able to setup his account so it will be good for him when he returns. I'm really excited to have this little piece of tech make life just that much easier. THANKS AUGUST!

Packaging: 5/5 -Really sleek looking packaging. I love how it opens like a door and is sitting in it's own August Lock bed. Very clever. Ease of Installation: 4.5/5 I consider myself handy. I at least try make improvements around the home before I outsource the job. Setting this lock up is relatively easy if you have experience installing deadbolts. However, you really do need to be careful not to move fast because you can easily misalign the barrel lock, which then makes using your key from the outside useless. This product is meant to enhance the existing lock, not replace your current manual key lock. After installation, you should be able to use both freely. If you move too fast, you need to restart and readjust the lock to make sure your key still works. So be careful and be sure to read the install directions 3x before you make any moves. If you are a little unsure of yourself, definitely have a handy man come by. But overall, I think most people can figure out how to install. I ran into my own issues where my deadbolt did not perfectly line up with the hole in the door jamb. So I have to re-align the door and hole in the jamb, which took some time. This is no fault of August of course, but it is something users may run into. Again, not a small task to correct, so if you are unfamiliar how to do that, use a handy man. Aesthetics After Install: 3.5/5 Not gonna lie: It's clunky looking. It isn't as sleek or flush with the door as it maybe could be. But, it's also got working gears inside and takes AA batteries, so it needs the space it takes up. We have Nest thermostats in our house, and I imagined it looking like a Nest. It's about 2x deeper than a Nest and maybe 1.5x wider. It isn't ugly, but it's definitely a conversation piece with everyone that comes to the house. Not a bad thing, but it sticks out. Setup & Phone Sync: 5/5 Super easy! As long as you download the August app and can follow directions, you won't have any issues. Just be sure to stand near your lock to get the strongest signal and you'll be fine. And if you lose signal, there is a re-calibrate function that you can always use. Overall, we really like the lock. We use it with the keypad almost exclusively now. I almost never bring my keys with me anymore, and I love that feature the best! Less stuff I need to carry and keep track of when I'm not home. If you're looking to upgrade your lock or home to a smart home, this is what you need!

i might have just had a bad one, but it was very inconsistent so i returned it and went with a Kevo.

to many addons needed to make it do any worth having. it didn't help us at all.

Had a Schlage but the lock tab didn't reach the August lock. The adapter was too short

I'm no gadget connoisseur, but this one is one of the best purchases I've made. If, like me, you have a janitor's set of keys, and rummaging through your bag to find them every time you come home has become such a time-suck, this is the product for you! You might be thinking, "Just put your keys in a more accessible spot." But this guy does so much more than replace my cumbersome keys. I can unlock my front door from my car so that I don't have to put down all my groceries and such by the time I get there. If guests are coming to stay with me, I can let them in remotely instead of coordinating some complicated key exchange. If your phone dies, the mechanism still works the same way -- you can still use your keys. It's just a lot more convenient this way. Also, if you run out the door and forget to lock up, you can do so from anywhere. I love this thing.
