    Work Great!

I pick up this home kit yesterday with the Connect and I’ve read some of the reviews from a few different website and heard about the unlocking problem. The installation took about 20 or so to get it up and running. I am an Android User and I think there is a setup issue with the app but I was able to work around. Adding the Guest User Account was problem if you are trying to setup your family account using the email address account. The August software would not pick up email verification code for the second email after the initial email was sent. I spent the extra 70 buck for the August Connect because it would integrate with my Nest thermostats for the auto way feature when the door was locked. I think the Autolock Geofence is a great feature and your Location Mode on your phone must be set High Accuracy which drain your battery a little more than usual but it help the accuracy of the GPS Location. I wish the app had a feature to track the battery status but overall I am impress so far. I would recommend getting the August Connect because you can control it from anywhere and notification is a bit over kill but I will probably turn it off. It a great feature if you have older kids who get on the Bus and is the last one to leave the house, the notification sent directly to the owner.

Awesome smart lock, esp with keypad!

This lock, paired with the August keypad, has worked out really well for my home and family. Installation was a breeze on my existing Schlage deadbolt, and everything I needed was either in the box or in the well-laid out online instructions. It was the coolest thing to activate the lock and see it light up and turn for the first time! Pro tip on the installation for Schlage deadbolts: try both inserts on the deadbolt pin to see which one fits better, since it affects the orientation of the outside cylinder piece. My kids and nanny love having their own personal entry codes, and I like the added security of knowing exactly who entered and left by just checking the entry/exit history in the app. I may never have to use a physical key again, which offers huge peace of mind and convenience. I've been using the lock for a couple of weeks and have yet to have any problems with it.

    Rock Solid device

I bought three of these and all of them are working just great. Install is a breeze, it takes longer to update the firmware(10 minutes) then it does to actually do the physical install. If you have a door that takes some force normally to lock, I.e., you have to bang the door with a forearm to push the lock into place, then you may need to do some adjusting with your normal lock install so that the August lock will be able to lock it as well. But this isn't a failure of the lock, the regular lock wasn't installed right to begin with. I've also got this synced to my Logitech harmony remote which is also working like a charm. As for HomeKit, it failed once on me in 2-3 weeks of use so that's pretty positive in my opinion. Otherwise, it's been great just saying Siri commands to lock/unlock individual locks or the whole group of them. I'm glad I waited for that HomeKit version. I've also synced it to my nest thermostats and cameras. Within the August app, I'll get a small video clip of who came thru whatever door. I also have the app setup to send me notifications when any door is accessed which I personally like. I was able to appropriately adjust what features other users got from the locks as well, something that was key to me. As for words of advice, just do some pre-research thru the August website to make sure the lock is compatible. Also, don't over tighten the mounting plate August gives you, you'll have a tough time mounting the device onto the plate and it may affect the ease of the device being able to spin that lock. From a HomeKit standpoint, you want to setup other users in house on their own August account and share access that way. From there, you can within your iOS settings, share the HomeKit capabilities. It's the only way to do HomeKit for multiple users as HomeKit is device based so again, you want to share that HomeKit capacity, not register each user for HomeKit thru the August app.

    Great lock. Game changer!

The Smart Lock was super easy to install, probably under 15 minutes. It works incredibly well. We set the lock to auto-lock our front door after two minutes. It always does it, which is critical to us. We also set the lock to auto unlock our door. It automatically unlocks the door as we approach it. It works really well. We connect to the lock using the August app and Bluetooth and it always connects almost immediately. If I connect remotely using wifi or the cell network, it takes three to five seconds. Either way, it always connects. Also, we have given access to lots of people, including our kids, parents, housekeeper and frequent guests. Everyone loves using the lock. Well done!

I installed a Schlage Sense touchpad deadbolt since the August Generation 1 model was buggy and had all sorts of issues. Glad I waited since the Gen 2 Homekit compatible model is awesome and has no bugs and works great. I switched out the horrible Schlage sense and replaced it with 2 August and keypads and it works beautifully. I love all the features and the install was simple and easy and I am glad I waited!

    Great for sidedoor

First of all, I want to put my review in context. I bought this for use in a house with very ornate/expensive hardware on the doors, so I was focused on how to install the various products, keypad, Doorbell-cam and smart lock without replacing any of my existing hardware. It was not practical to use the smart lock on our front door as it did not have a traditional deadbolt, but we did find the Smart-Lock and keypad a perfect fit for our backdoor. It is a great solution if we forget our key, or need to have a neighbor come in and feed the cat. I find the design very appealing: hi-tech but minimalist, and so far it has operated flawlessly in that capacity. We also have a remote gate, with two way voice but the doorbell-cam finally gives us a way to see who is at the gate. Only reason I give this 4.5 not 5 stars is its incompatibility with high-end hardware.

I love my August Smart Home Solution! The smart lock is great because I’m one of those people that can never remember if I locked the front door and this allows me to check the status of my lock and then lock it from my phone if I forgot. I also like having the ability to give virtual keys and key codes that I can control and take away for anyone we want to have access to our home. And I love the fact that I don’t need a hide-a-key anymore. My favorite part of the system is the doorbell cam. It is like a security system since it allows us to view and talk to visitors through the doorbell cam and have it appear as if we are home -- even when we aren't. We installed the lock—which was easy (our Schlage lock needed longer screws, which was easy to pick up at a lock store) and we had a company install the doorbell cam. We are very happy with our purchase!

First let me talk about the Cons with this product you do also need to buy the additional Wi-Fi kit or connect. If not this lock only works via Bluetooth and is not a good option. Very easy to install and pretty much any front door just take off your top deadbolt and this mounts on the back. Works with my wink Hub also integrates with Google Assistant. Runs on two double a batteries and have had no issues little slower to find lock and unlock than I would like but hopefully that will work that out. If you're looking for a good easy option this is it

    Not Reliable

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Very expensive after getting the normal deadbolt, the August Lock, the connect and keypad. —Most of the time they go offline -My guests always experience glitches with the app account set up. And this hurts my business -batteries run down too quickly -Many times the remote functionality doesn’t work even with the Connect being right by the door and the strong wi-fi just 15 ft away. -terrible customer service, they never troubleshoot or create tickets but just tell me the issue is with my guests and me. -the log isn’t always accurate -the keypad doesn’t always work, and 20% of the time it won’t let me set up a code remotely and states I have to be standing at the door for it to go thru. But sometimes the remote functions work. -It’s always a guessing game with this equipment hoping it works and doesn’t glitch out in many different ways. -Also, it’s consumed so much of my time changing batteries, calling support, helping guests figure out issues with account set up and doing the updates. Every time the guests did everything right but the system wouldn’t move them to the lock screen it just glitches out and freezes up. All in all very much a pain for the expense hoping for convenience but I didn’t get it.

An improvement over previous gen, now recommended

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've owned the prior generation (non "homekit" version that comes in many colors) and this one is much better. 1- It connects to my phone more reliably than the previous gen 2- The battery cover is implemented much better (the previous gen would often fall off, this one uses magnets) As far as I can tell, these are the main feature changes. I don't use any of the Homekit features so I can't comment on those. Auto-unlock is still a little unreliable. Sometimes I get home, and it doesn't unlock so I do it with the app, and then I'm walking around my kitchen a few minutes later and I hear it auto-unlock, and my phone buzzes. LOL. Good thing I don't live in a bad neighborhood ;-) For us, it's "good enough" and the addition of the Keypad completes the system.

PROs - Installation was easy enough. Pretty straight forward. If you have any decorative groves on your door, the latch might get caught on it. I had to cut out bit of the raised part of the door to install. - Works well with alexa - locking/unlocking CONs - Auto-unlock is very spotty. We have 2 phones, S7 edge and iphone 7 both Verizon variant. With S7 edge, it used to not work at all and now it auto-unlocks the door well after I am in the house. I would say about 2~5min. With iphone it is hit or miss. About 50~60% of the time. I have spoken to support at August and after providing all the information they asked, they told me that they are working on software update and it will be fixed. I think it is very disappointing for something that has premium price tag. - Mobile app is poorly made. Considering this device is only controlled by mobile app, this cannot be a good thing. I also purchased august connect and the keypad and the interface is slow and connection is spotty. When I open mobile app from outside, it attempts to connect to the lock via bluetooth and fail until I hit the wi-fi icon. It knows that I am away from home so I am unsure why it does that. - August connect tells me that its connection to the lock is weak or medium and they are less than 10 feet apart with line of sight so I am unsure how to improve it. Support did not have an answer for this issue. It takes good 1~2 minute to connect to the lock and unlock if you are at remote location. That is if it works on your first attempt. Very often, it gives me error message saying it failed to connect. Changing settings and creating keycodes remotely is a nightmare. It will never establish connection on my first attempt and it will lose the connection mid operation constantly. My august connect is installed about 20 feet away from the router. I live in a condo so wi-fi signal is very good. - Keypad has rubber membrane keys and they feel kind of cheap. It doesn't really give you any kind of feedback if you actuated the key so it has some learning curve. You have to really bottom the keys and make sure you pressed it. Also, anybody can just take it off of your door by detaching it from the back plate which screws into the door. I would not recommend purchasing this if you are in a bad neighborhood. Also, battery life is horrendous. It just went dead today and I put 2 brand new AAA batteries less than a month ago. It was on a power save mode too. I'm thinking about buying rechargeable batteries but how long would that last? - After creating new key code for a person if you share it via app, they won't get it. Email nor text. You will have to manually send the code to whoever you are granting access. - Support response promptly. They acknowledge that they received my inquiry pretty quickly and responses within 1~2 days. However, does not really resolve issues. Conclusion I purchased August because I was in the market for a smart lock and I wanted auto-unlock and remote control feature. It has a premium price tag compared to other keyless entry options. I cannot say that I am enjoying all the features I expected over other cheaper options around $100 and this doesn't even come with a deadbolt. It gets the job done most part but I feel like I wasted about $250 for all the bells and whistles that doesn't really work. I would probably go with something else if I can choose again.

    This is the future

I love my August lock. There are a few quirks, but overall, it's a great device. I give it 5 stars because other than the kinks (which friends with the same lock do NOT experience), it's great to have. Firstly, the hardware itself feels pretty amazing. It has a great build quality and definitely feels like it will be able to withstand countless lock/unlocks. The magnetic faceplate is a breeze to remove if you ever need to, but seeing as it comes with batteries, you probably won't need to do this very often. The "indicator" makes it easy to see from afar is the door is locked or unlocked. The unit lights up green when unlocked, and lights up red when locked - the lights are invisible unless lit up and are very bright and pretty. The sounds upon lock/unlock are very satisfying and make me feel like I'm living in the future. The software side is also very good. Being able to send friends permanent or temporary keys is SUPER convenient. Seeing who has locked and unlocked my door is also cool. Being able to lock/unlock my door with my phone seems unnecesarry, but like a smartwatch, once you have this luxury, it's hard to imagine living without it. I have an iPhone, and having the August notification widget for quick lock access is a must. However, I wish it didn't have to open the app to lock/unlock, because then there's that 7-10 second window where I'm standing outside my door, waiting to make sure it locked. It is easier than using a key, but not faster. Once you hook it up to HomeKit, you can remotely unlock/lock my door from ANYWHERE, and it is soooo cool and slick. Very convenient. The auto-unlock feature is spotty. Sometimes I come home to a notification that my door has been unlocked, which is AWESOME. But more often than not, I find that the door has not unlocked. Which begs the question - what's the point? Well, my friends do not have this problem with their August locks, and am still tinkering with the settings, so we will see. Sometimes, when it doesn't auto-unlock, it will start to auto-unlock as I am turning the key, or, more annoyingly, I will enter my house manually, lock the door behind me, only to have the lock automatically unlock as I sit on my couch. Not sure what's up here... Overall, this is a great product, but August still has some kinks to work out. I give it 5 stars though because the execution is great, and the issues I have may pertain only to me.

Super easy to install and setup on my Kwikset deadbolt. responds quickly and easy to see if it's in the locked and unlocked position. Word to new users please make sure to disable the autolock if you frequently go outside the house (walk dog, get mail, etc) without your cell phone or keys as i've already experienced being locked out!!! I bought this lock because of the ability to link it to Wi-Fi with the sold seperate adapter. The autolock feature has only worked once, and it was slow at that, usually it says "auto-unlocking" and I stand at the door until I either just open the app and unlock it, which seems to take a while to work, or just use my key because it's that unreliable. Connecting to the lock via the Wi-Fi while away from home only works about 1/4 of the time, which is the whole reason I spent the extra money on this lock to replace the Friday Lock. The Friday lock no longer supports Wi-Fi, but the auto-Unlock was perfect... Sort of hate this lock, it was supposed to make life easier, but seems to have made it more of a hassle than just using a key.

I have given August a solid try for nearly 6 months and I have to say I am very disappointed. I wanted to post this review to hopefully save someone money and time: Pros: 1. Installation pretty easy done within 15-20 mins 2. Didn't have to replace my entire lock 3. App .. ok not great 4. Assigning access .. no problem Cons: 1. When using the lock manually to lock the door, the back face plate falls off nearly every time, and it is hard to put back on - we use tape to hold it now 2. THIS IS A BIG ONE - if your door isn't perfectly aligned, the lock will fail. I have a newer home that is currently settling into its foundation - the doors are a fraction off here and there which can happen, and the lock will not lock or ulock 3. I have been locked out of my house 2 times and had to wait for my someone to come home with a key. The lock just would not open the door and the app said there was a calibration issue 4. The remote add on, which I purchased separately is a JOKE. It took forever to get it connected to my wifi (and I am an IT professional) and post that it never stayed connected. So remote open and close is non existent 5. And last but not least and probably the worst deal, the app will say the door is locked but 50% of the time it wasn't. So every time we used the APP to lock the door, we had to double check it actually locked. After trying 3-4 times, we ended up using the key. UGH .. whats the point then I really wanted this to work. Great concept, but man it just doesn't work. I am now in the process of changing out my lock all together and I am out the money for this thing. Please save your money folks!

Inconsistent performance, risk of lock opening

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased the August lock and the Connect for wifi access to the lock - the pieces are marketed to be easy to use and install - I struggled to get consistent performance with the lock system for 9 months. I found the August lock more complicated than the marketing materials made it out to be and the instructions themselves were challenging to understand at times. Security for my home and family are a priority so I'd expect a lock to be layered with extra safeguards and perhaps more involved from a technology and/or installation standpoint but I would want those aspects to be found in the lock itself, not in the setup and use of the lock for everyday applications. I had some random instances of the lock unlocking itself when I first had it - I called August customer support and they felt it was probably an issue with the install or the set up the lock with my phone. I reinstalled everything and had several months of the lock performing as anticipated. About 3 months later, the lock started again with unlocking randomly. I called August and they reported that they were aware of cases where the lock would open unprompted and the reasoning ranged from the lock's proximity to cellular towers or some of the settings which were available as part of the setup options. I finally had to replace the August with a Kwikset Kevo lock - I couldn't chance a potential security risk should the lock open at the wrong time.
