Almost Perfect
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really want to give this a higher rating as the install was super easy and the functionality is great. However, the slow reaction between the keypad and lock knocks a star off and by far the worst part about this product is the abysmal battery life. I literally am changing the battery about once every 2 months, and this is with me being very mindful of not utilizing the keyless lock and unlock. I will go out of my way to bring a physical key with me or leave the door slightly ajar if I'm running out to check the mail to make sure it doesn't auto lock and drain the battery.

Great but can have a problematic setup experience
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Awesome lock when you finally get through the setup. However, there are many issues you can encounter during setup that will hamper your efforts and maybe even result in you getting a refund. In my particular experience, I wanted to use it with Apple HomeKit. It is important to understand that Apple HomeKit relies on a good Bluetooth connection with an Apple HomeKit Hub. If your hub is too far away, it’s not going to be stable experience . However if you only intend to use the August App, it relies on your wifi connection (and could very well save you if your HomeKit fails you). But never ever leave home without your keys because that’s when the lock will fail you. It is also important to understand that if you have a fancy new modem or modem/router combination that has both wifi bands on a single SSID (meaning it decides which device uses 2.4 or 5.4), you might have some trouble. The lock only works on 2.4, and your router may not be able to figure that out. Therefore I highly recommend splitting 2.4 and 5.4 into separate SSIDs and using the 2.4 for your setup. If your modem or modem / router combination can’t do that, it may be time to replace it. Additionally, if your lock needs a firmware update (and it probably will), I highly recommend a factory reseting right after. There are situations in which the lock doesn’t work right after a firmware update unless you factory reset it. Trust me….. just factory reset it after the firmware update and you’ll save some headaches. I would also like to point out that resetting you Apple account password during Apple HomeKit setup is a bad idea. It can cause some additional problems. Work out your password issues before you setup this lock. I would also like to point out that if this lock goes through batteries like candy, you probably didn’t install it properly. During installation, it’s super important that the mount plate be perfectly centered with the shaft of the deadbolt. If the deadbolt doesn’t turn smooth and easy, recenter it and try again. You’ll be glad you spent 20 minutes on this step when you don’t have to cash out for batteries every time you hit the grocery store.

Perfect!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Just what I wanted! I needed a smart lock that was small, discreet, easy to install and this was it. I love how it works with your existing hardware, so no need to have it re-keyed. Installation took about 10 minutes, works well with my iPhone 12 pro and I love it. You can key the additional keypad and give out codes to people or lock and unlock the lock from your phone. Love it!

Excellent smart lock
||Posted . Owned for 9 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Have had this lock for about 10 months now and it works perfectly. It was easy to install and the batteries last about 6 weeks before I have to change them. I love the features and ease of use. Soap love that from the outside, it doesn't look like a smart lock is installed, and that I can use my keys as well. Highly recommend.

Greatly improved lock with the Wi-Fi built in
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My old August Smart lock stop working properly. When I opened the internal components, I ended up breaking the lock ... The old version of the lock required either of the gorbel camera or the wi-Fi box plugged into an outlet inside the house in order to remotely connect to the lock. This lock has Wi-Fi built in. For home kit users, this is a plus because the August line of doorbells is not compatible with home kit. As for the lock itself, it is 25% smaller than its predecessor. The rotation mechanism is much smoother as well. There is an added feature to let one know that the door was closed when locked. However, all improvements come with a cost. The lock now requires CR 123 lithium batteries instead of standard AA alkaline batteries. I do not know how long the batteries will last, but they are much more expensive than AA batteries. Now, let me tell you why I prefer August smart locks. The August smart lock uses the dead bolt already in the door. The mechanism replaces the knob on the inside of the door used to unlock the lock. I read a review it while back that the actual locking mechanism on many smart locks that and down on the outside of the door are not secure. It is easy for a perpetrator to break them and get into the hot.

Your Smart Home Will Never Be The Same
||Posted . Owned for more than 2 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This smart lock has been one of the best additions to my smart home setup! It works seamlessly with both Apple HomeKit and Google Home, giving me peace of mind every time I leave the house. I essentially never had to lock my door manually again—such a game-changer! With features like auto-lock, auto-unlock, remote control, and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connectivity, it’s incredibly convenient. The only downside was the lack of clear instructions for uninstalling it. I ended up leaving it behind at my old apartment, but the next resident seemed to appreciate it as much as I did. While it seemed pricey at first, looking back, it was totally worth the investment. I'm planning to get another one soon!

A- Overall
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had this Smart Lock for a few months. Install and set up was very easy. Had to play with it for a while to see the overall workings of it. All in all, it is a good product. Very spotty with wi-fi connection. My router/modem is within 5 feet of the smart lock and it has connection issues often. Every few hours, I get a notification about smart lock reconnected to wi-fi. Because of the spotty wi-fi, some of the auto-lock/unlock features can be a hit or miss. When everything is working correctly, it's a big hit.

Apple Integration improvement and Batteries issue!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am living in the three floors house and I always have to come down from the third floor to the first floor if my friends come over to my home. This is an easy to install smartwatch that can install it in less than 5 minutes. It does not require any expertise for the installation. Only the sensor requires drilling if the door and molding are flush. I have noticed a few issues with the Apple Home control and apple watch shortcuts that do not work. I have set August's smart home shortcut in the watch screen which is easy to access. However, most of the time does not work. It has an auto-unlock feature that can open the lock when we go out of the range of the Bluetooth and come back home. However, it also has some issues. I have also noticed that lock batteries discharge quickly within 3 months. It should have a rechargeable thing that we can charge on the night or stand above the watch to charge via a power bank that can reduce maintenance costs. Overall, it is easy to install and the August application has a door lock history and access feature for temp or permanent. However, there is always some issue with the Apple Home control or smartwatch shortcuts and Bluetooth auto-unlock as well. They should also improve the batteries issue.

Disappointed
||Posted . Owned for 11 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setup was a disaster and required getting an iphone to set up for the first time because even going with 3 different Android devices from a moto Z2, Samsung Note 20 and a moto g they count all connect but not complete the process. Now after having these installed for about a year they chew through batteries constantly losing connection even though I have 4 mesh routers in my relatively modest 2 story home. I get perfect wifi coverage from the street to the back of my property about 140' away from the back of my home but the lock in my front door constantly drops wifi. I have to believe it's the unit as the one on a different door has been dependable, maybe only needed new batteries 2 times in the last year. The one on my front door constantly gives wifi errors and needs new batteries almost every 20 days. I guess I need to bite the bullet and swap it for a new unit because just writing this made me think it's got to be the unit in my front door since the unit on the other door seems to work just fine. Not looking forward to adding the lock back into the august app because I don't know if the Android issues were ever really fixed. I will say their tech support was friendly, empathetic, and human so that's why I went with 3 stars instead of 2 or 1.

Good smart lock, HomeKit didn’t work
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted to love this lock as I already had the previous August Smart Lock Pro. I liked the smaller profile and slender fit, integration was good - EXCEPT for HomeKit. I could not get HomeKit to work. Contacted the manufacturer for troubleshooting, the manufacturer was also stumped and could not help me. I was told that the problem could not be rectified, therefore I had no choice but to return to this item back to the retailer for refund.

I cannot recommend this product
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After looking at numerous reviews it seems people either hate this thing or really like it. I’m at the lower end of the scale I guess, can’t say I really hate it but I sure don’t like it. So first, support options are a virtual chat bot which is almost worthless or email, with a three day response time. For having just spent almost $250 on a tech product if I have a problem I want to talk to someone. August claims it’s Covid-19 and/or wildfires in California that are creating their support problems and I can appreciate these things likely do have an impact but I’ve got numerous other smart home accessories that I’ve no problem getting someone on the phone. If all you want to do is operate the lock with the August app via Bluetooth this may be the lock for you but if you want to integrate with HomeKit, read on. If you want this lock for HomeKit you SHOULD read my section under cons. I do want to say here that my lock got returned the next day. I’ll describe below pros and cons but after 30-45 minutes after setup, the lock basically quit working. First thing that happened was in HomeKit it became unresponsive. I took the batteries out, put them back in to basically “reboot” the lock, no help. I did a factory reset using the August app, went through the whole setup again and still didn’t work. Eventually the lock wouldn’t connect to even the August app via Bluetooth from two feet away so I couldn’t do anything. Checked the batteries, they were fine. So I uninstalled the lock from the door, uninstalled the doorsense, deleted my August account, deleted the lock from HomeKit, repackaged the lock and my wife returned it today. Bought it locally, not from Amazon. Even though it may simply have been a defective lock I will NOT be buying another one of these for reasons below in cons. Pros; Probably the best thing about it is it REALLY is easy to install. Literally a screwdriver and 10 minutes (if you’re really slow) and it’s installed. Now it comes with this thing called “doorsense” which is supposed to tell the app whether the door is open or closed (didn’t get to test this) and it’s easy to install as well but in my opinion, a bit clunky. The lock is smaller than the previous August lock which is a good thing but it’s still a big knob on the inside. Batteries are super easy to replace. The lock is pretty easy to setup with the app although in my opinion, there are a lot of steps. It was an excellent idea of August to include the QR code’s for setting up in the app and with HomeKit, inside the lid of the knob which pops off with a push. You do have to create an account with August but that’s not at all unusual. It works with a multitude of dead bolt locks and compatibility is listed on the August website. Cons; I guess the reality is that if the lock simply hadn’t failed I don’t really have any/many cons and “might” have kept it if not for the integration with HomeKit which is the sole reason I bought this smart lock. The irony of this is CNET has listed this product as the best HomeKit compatible smart lock in 2020. Man, did someone fail at testing for this. Oh, as listed in the Pros above, the lock is easy to install in the August app and after that setup it’s was easy enough to add to my home Wi-Fi network and then HomeKit, just a lot of steps in all of these operations. Once the lock is integrated into HomeKit it shows up as an available accessory which you can then add to a specific room with or without scenes, you can add it to automations you’ve setup, etc, etc. Everything you would expect with a HomeKit accessory. Here’s the rub. My wife who is an invitee in our HomeKit network can’t manage the network but can use every accessory and automation just like me. The August smart lock showed up in the Home app on her iPhone after I set it up but on her phone, instead of being able to use the lock, the icon in HomeKit said setup was required. When you pressed and held the icon to get to the next screen it said to use the manufacturers app to setup. EVERY other HomeKit accessory I have has not done this. I’ve got ceiling fans, lights, blinds, smart plugs and switches, another smart lock (which I’ll mention shortly) and when I’ve added them to our HomeKit network they’ve ALL showed up in her phone as immediately available to use. So I go back into the August app and find the section to invite guest. The app is requiring me to create ANOTHER account for her as a guest just so I can add to HomeKit and get the accessory that’s already setup in HomeKit to simply work for her. Rather than create another account I tried using my credentials from my account I had already created but then I got a message on my phone that “someone” was trying to use my phone number which was already part of an account and wouldn’t go any further. This is the most obnoxious and convoluted HomeKit setup I’ve ever seen, if there’s more than one person using the HomeKit network. I would say maybe it’s something to do with the ability to invite other guest to be able to use their Bluetooth phone to lock/unlock the lock but my Level lock which has that same capability does not put you through this crap. I’ll make this brief as nothing else has been but if you want an elegant smart lock that integrates seamlessly with HomeKit, look at the Level lock @ level.co. This thing is awesome and the ONLY reason I didn’t buy a second of these instead of the August lock was because of location. The caveat with the Level lock is it’s Bluetooth only and has to be within range of a HomeKit hub to work, and it wouldn’t have where I wanted to install. Good luck to anyone who buys the August WiFi Smart lock. It’s not the lock for me.

Posted .Hello,
We’re very sorry to hear about your experience with the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock. We strive to provide the best support possible and are currently managing through having many of our staff members impacted by COVID-19 as well as the recent wildfires in CA and hurricanes in the gulf (we have contact centers in the SF Bay Area and Mexico). The health and safety of our team is always a priority, and as with everyone else these days, we’re managing through a whole new world. We hear you and are doing our best to make changes to best serve our customers and keep our team members healthy and safe.
Currently, In order to use our locks via HomeKit all users must be registered Owners in the August app. After a user has been invited with Owner level access the user must connect to the lock via Bluetooth after the HomeKit invitation has been accepted. If the invited HomeKit user sees a Setup Required error then the user should ensure that they have made a Bluetooth connect as a lock Owner in the August app. August was the first lock integration that was build with HomeKit when we released our HomeKit enabled second generation lock and security is our top priority. For security purposes, (security is at the core of what we do at August) this was the decision about how to move forward with the HomeKit integration. We hear your frustrations and will be sure to share this with our team.
For security purposes we do have a 2-Factory Authentication that should have provided you with a verification code when signing into another device with your existing account. However, you received the error message that someone was trying to use your phone number because you were attempting to create a new separate account with credentials that are already tied to your existing August account. While we do advice against it, we do have users who share a single August account by selecting Sign In when using the same credentials rather than attempting to create a new account.
Let us know if you have questions.
Thanks,
August Home

Good lock but not with Apple bridges like HomePod
||Posted . Owned for 5 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had this lock for awhile using just the august app. Worked well but I ultimately bought it to use with HomeKit. I struggled to make it connect even with adding a HomePod as a hub. What I eventually figured out is that my Wi-Fi signal was poor (and it told me so from the beginning) so I added the HomePod which was well within range of Wi-Fi strength and Bluetooth range. It basically split the difference on the distance. Didn’t work after many attempts. Finally added another router to increase the Wi-Fi strength and remove the HomePod from the equation. Once the Wi-Fi strength was increased I was able to connect to HomeKit. Lesson learned is that although it’s HomeKit compatible it doesn’t necessarily mean something is Apple hardware compatible. Kind of a bummer but it does work well now…. Even better than the app. By the way I did work with tech support and they were okay but I ultimately figured out the solution on my own. I really did my homework before I chose August. None are 100% issue free. My preconceived expectations caused disappointment but I’m happy with how it turned out. Also, this is my opinion in my particular application. I would recommend the purchase but make sure you test it out within the return window.

Good, but not great, yet.
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.So... My lock died. The batteries died, and when I replaced them and when through the recalibration process it gave up the ghost. I called customer service and that was a 7/10 experience, the rep was helpful and friendly, but it took a long time to connect and get to solution. I am getting a new unit covered under warranty, so an extended warranty might be worth considering?? Overall user experience has been mixed. When it works it is great no longer messing with keys just walk up to the door and it is open. But sometimes (always when my hands are full) it takes some time to detect me and unlock so I have to wave my butt at the door hoping it will connect and open, needless to say my neighbors think I'm some kind of weirdo... I would recommend this for someone who is willing to be patient, it does work but it is not 100% on point all the time. The notifications are great, the auto-lock is handy but make sure you set your timer to give you some time in case you walk out to take out the trash and don't get locked out, (ask me how I know).

||Posted . But once I adjusted the gap in the door to allow the deadbolt to move freely it’s been great these last few weeks . Able to allow guest access as unlock/lock away from home .

Love the August WiFi Smart Lock
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We’ve only had the August lock for a short time, but it is working great. We switched from a Kevo lock because the Kevo lock wasn’t responding well, and our guest keys didn’t work consistently. The August lock is small and compact, is working well, and has built-in WiFi. The installation could not have been easier. The only cons I’ve seen so far with it is that sometimes the auto-unlock doesn’t happen before I get to the door. So I have to use the app to unlock the door. Additionally, I do miss the touch-to-open feature of the Kevo, which is not available on the August lock. But all-in-all, we’re much happier with the August lock than we were with the Kevo lock.

Great easy, built in wifi.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This wireless lock has to be one of the best on the market. Great signal and app just plain works. The down side is that there’s no website to control your locks with. Only accessible via the app. Batteries that come with it only last a couple months. But most 123 batteries will last all year after that. Very easy to install since it uses your original lock mechanism.

Nice and sleek smart lock
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Was looking for something that works with my existing key deadbolt and perfect solution. First set of battery ran out very quickly in few months, I hope it's one-off related to usage and not going to be the case all the time. One less star just due to that battery issue. Otherwise very nice and sleek smart lock.
