It is supposed to let you save your video onto a thumb drive so you don’t have to pay for cloud service at nearly $14/mo. You have to have cloud service so you can use the Blink program to tell the program to save to disc. You don’t have any function access to the program without paying for the cloud service. So don’t buy this thinking you can bi- pass the cloud and save to thumb drive. Also my cameras after less than a year it doesn’t pick up half of what is in front of the camera. BLINK SUX

Your concerns are valid, and I want to provide some clarity on how local storage actually works with the Blink Sync Module 2.
The Blink Sync Module 2 does support local storage to a USB drive without a subscription. When a compatible USB drive is inserted into the Sync Module 2, cameras that are not on a subscription plan are automatically configured to record motion clips directly to the USB drive over your local Wi-Fi network. These clips can then be viewed through the Blink app. This feature — called "Local Storage" — is specifically designed as the free fallback for users without a subscription plan.
Here's what you get without a subscription when using the Sync Module 2 with a USB drive :
Motion-activated notifications sent to your phone
Motion event recording saved directly to the USB drive
Live view (limited to 5 minutes per session)
Clip playback through the Blink app from the USB drive
There are a few things that could be causing the issue you're experiencing. First, if your account has or recently had an active trial or subscription, the system may still be routing clips to the cloud instead of local storage. When a subscription expires, the system should automatically transition cameras to local storage mode.
Second, the USB drive must be formatted in exFAT format — NTFS and other formats are not supported and may cause the drive to appear incompatible.
Third, some older camera models like the XT and XT2 are not compatible with the local storage.
Regarding your cameras not detecting motion after less than a year, here are some troubleshooting steps to try:
Increase the motion sensitivity setting in the Blink app
Ensure cameras are placed at the recommended height of 3–4 feet, with motion crossing the field of view side-to-side rather than moving directly toward the camera
Confirm the firmware on both the cameras and Sync Module 2 is up to date
Check that your cameras have a strong Wi-Fi connection to the Sync Module

Note that this comes with the Blink kits and is only needed to be purchased separately if you by the cameras separately.
