I’ve been wanting to install a video doorbell for several months. I get the opportunity to install the Blink Video wired/wireless doorbell today. I opened the box, and it included the video doorbell, mounting screws an opening tool to replace batteries, a mounting template, and 2AA lithium batteries. I insert the batteries and download the Android app from the Play store. I fire up the app and it’s a piece of cake to install the doorbell. The app works just as it should, walking me from step to step. It sees my doorbell and I add it. Tada, ready to go. It then asks if I want wired or wireless and I know I want wired, but I’m not ready to do that at 10 pm, so lucky for users, Blink has a third option, ask me later. Yes, that works. I play with the doorbell a few times and it’s nice and loud. My phone gets a notification that someone’s at my front door and the video shows me in my den. So, everything’s ready for the morning. Then I read the instructions and for wired install, it calls for a 16 to 24 volt/30-amp transformer. Mine must be okay, right? Nope, my house was built in 91 and apparently 10 volt was all that my wired doorbell required. So, no install until I order a transformer and replace my current 30-year-old one. You know I’m keeping it because they probably don’t make em’ that good anymore. So, for now, I just have it hooked up wireless and will need to finish the job later. Since I don’t have it wired, I can’t talk about some of the options that only work with a wired unit, but I’m sure they’ll be great. The video quality on wireless is great and for the price of the unit, I think it’s a deal! Finally, I don’t see anything I don’t like about the Blink Wired/Wireless video doorbell. If you own a newer home, your transformer will probably be okay, but on older homes, they never saw the need for enough power to handle video. That shouldn’t detract from the unit as it’s built to operate on today’s tech, not 90’s tech. I’ll get the right transformer, turn off the power and swap them out. Then it’s a quick mounting of the backing plate and wiring the two leads. Throw some waterproof tape over the open holes and pop the camera front onto the back. Turn the power back on and reset all the clocks in the house, lol. I’d have no problem recommending this to my friends if they aren’t looking for Google Home compatibility. I use both Alexa and Hey, Google in my network, so it works for me.

I once purchased an excellent video doorbell but the first issue I had was that the only angle I could install it was not ideal. That was because of where the wiring was located and the stone frame, which makes it very difficult to rewire anything. But I didn’t have that problem with the Blink Video Doorbell as it allowed me to skip the wires and install exactly where I needed it. Whenever possible, wiring is preferable because you don’t have to worry about batteries running out. Blin gives you that flexibility. It was so easy to install, and you can have it up and running in minutes after you download the app and follow the instructions. Because you’re not forced to subscribe for their service and you can save the videos locally, this makes the Blink doorbell even more enticing. Just be aware that you need the Sync Module 2 for that but I couldn’t find much that I didn’t like. Video quality is 1080p, which is excellent for a doorbell. The two-way audio works well and so far, it has not disconnected or produced subpar images even under low light conditions, which are much better than I expected for a product that is not considered high end. A lot of modern features such as zone or masking are available, and they work well. The only missing feature here is facial recognition. I personally like that feature but many people don’t. So, you may see that as either negative or positive. For this review, I consider it negative. One of the positive features is that it integrates very well with Alexa as expected from an Amazon product. Interestingly, its respect for privacy is much better than another Amazon product. Considering price, features and quality, it is hard to pass.

If you are already a Blink fan you'll want to add this to your current system. At 50 bucks this thing is amazing. I chose the non-wired setup and it uses two AA lithium batteries like the Blink Xt's do and they last a long time. 10 minutes out of the box and it was working fine. The audio is amazing, with the doorbell chime much larger than you'd expect. By default it also chimes on your phone through the app. You can hear who is out there and talk to them every easily--the speaker quality is way better than the Xt's too. It features the usual adjustable motion trigger zones, doesn't seem quite as sensitive to motion as the Xt's when both are set at level 5. I had to disable and then re-enable the Alexa skill to get the doorbell camera added to the list of cameras that can be accessed. The audio and video of it in my Echo Show was awesome, and I had to remind myself not to leave it displayed since the camera was using battery power to do it. A nice feature for sure though. You can add it to your current grandfathered Blink system if you've had it long enough for free cloud storage and use it just like any security camera too. I was already using the latest version of the app but it is recommended that you update first if you aren't. The Blink Home Monitor app is very easy to use, you can tweak each camera's settings easily and access the library of clips from the cameras, and save them to the movies folder on your phone or share them to messages, social media apps or email. A lot of value in this doorbell camera, 5 stars for sure.

The Blink Video Doorbell is really good doorbell to capture video. When it said you can set it up in minutes, that is very accurate. It took me less than 15 minutes to unpack it and had it up and running. When I first set mine up it said I could use online instructions from their website. Unfortunately, the day I installed mine their website was having issues and was giving me 504 gateway errors. I was able to download the Blink app from the AppStore and was able to get everything setup. The instructions from the app were very easy to follow. The unit was a bit difficult to attach to the base. I continued to pull down on the unit until I heard a click. I was able to wire it to my existing doorbell. After I wired the doorbell I pressed the doorbell button, but only heard sound from the unit and not from the unit and the door chime inside my home. I had not idea that the app would enable this feature later. As I continued through the setup process it asked to verity if my unit was wired and asked me to press the doorbell button. After doing so it enabled the ability for the unit to make it’s own chime while also allowing the door chime inside my home to be heard as well. The video quality is clear and the notifications are very accurate. It comes with a 30 day trial period to save video recordings, which I will most likely sign up after my trial period ends.
