Not the best PT Anderson movie, but it worth the watch and Marky Mark is good in it.

I got this as a gift for my brother. He claims it's a pretty decent film, but not necessarily a classic. Probably worth a view.

    What a Ride!

I'm actually quite surprised that I was at the local movie theater on opening night back in October of 1997 when Boogie Nights was released, and I still recount the experience as being blatantly 'surreal'. 18 years old at the time, and not able to talk any of my friends into going to see the film, I ventured into the theater alone, wondering what all the 'hype' was surrounding this new and controversial film I had read about in the papers. The theater, although not nearly full, did have a decent turn out, but while I was personally intrigued by and engrossed in the film, I couldn't help but notice that about 75% of the audience had left prior to film's end. The only assumption I can make is that those people thought 'Boogie Nights' was going to be a disco/dancing type of movie something along the lines of 'Saturday Night Fever'. Well, it's not and my feeling is that most of those people didn't read anything about the film or its plot before deciding to go and see it on opening night. 'Boogie Nights' is in no way a picture for everyone, especially those under the age of 18. In it we see, in dark comedic form, the tragedies the pornography industry inflicts on most of its subjects. Contrary to select public opinion, I found this film to in no way be an endorsement for the pornographic industry, if anything I found it a deterrent, and a substantially well done deterrent at that. I can't necessarily recommend going out and buying this one (especially if you have kids that you don't want seeing it), but it really is a movie that is worth at least one viewing (or several, if you have friends to watch it with who enjoy the film's witty dialogue). This movie, much like the film 'the Big Lebowski,' is loaded with profanity and obscene comments, but the delivery in most instances is so well done and so comical, one really can't help but laugh uncontrollably. It's not really a movie you will enjoy as much watching it by yourself, but viewing it with friends will make for a 'wild ride' of a time!

    Excellent audio

I don't know what the guy is talking about, giving this movie a 3/5. I never write reviews, but his was so misinformed that I felt compelled to write one in this Blu-Rays defense. There is NOTHING wrong with this audio, it has a near perfect soundtrack with plenty of bass (and I didn't even have to upgrade to the TK-421 modification!). There must be something wrong with his speakers or receiver, because I heard every beautiful song through all 5 channels, and sub. My receiver displayed "Dolby TrueHD" and the source was 5.1 The video is even better than the audio. Don't listen to CincinnatiDan, he has no idea what he's talking about. Here are some more in-depth and professional reviews of this film. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Boogie-Nights-Blu-ray-Review/5389/

    Excellent High def work!

This is an excellent movie in general. It is a great character drama. Don't listen to the one who gave this Blue Ray's audio poor ratings. His system must be not working properly. I played this on my Panasonic Blue Ray player, to my Onkyo tx-nr905, to my Paradigm studio v4's with ultra cube 10 subwoofer. The Dolby True HD mix is top notch. Plenty of surround action, thundering bass. Every little nuanced sound shows exactly where it is supposed to be! If you have or have seen the dvd, just get the Blue ray, you won't be disappointed. To those who have not seen the movie. This is a great character drama with highs and lows. Here is a link to high def digest's review for more info: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=306151

Must See! Rags to Riches to Rags - 70's Style

This was such a good movie that I had to double dip when it came out on Blu-Ray. Based loosely on the story of John Holmes who went from a nobody in the 70's to an adult film superstar... and then tragically downhill after overindulging in the excesses of the 80's. Mark Walhberg does an excellent job playing the main character, Dirk Diggler, and is supported by an all star cast with Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, John C Reilly, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, William H Macy, Don Cheadle, and Heather Graham. The picture quality is a definite upgrade over the DVD and the excellent soundtrack will sound totally groovy on your Hi-Fi system. Lots of nudity and adult subject matter so watch it when the kids are not home.

This is an absolutely amazing film about the rise and decline of the industry in the 1970s and early 1980's. PTA shines thoroughly here in a film that he was probably extremely interested to make because of his great interest in this industry and its history. The ensemble of characters in this film also make it amazing.

"BOOGIE NIGHT" IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF 1997. WHAT A FANTASTIC TRIP BACK TO THE 1970'S IN LOS ANGELES. THE COSTUMES, HAIR-DOS AND CARS ARE ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS.

    Greate Video, Disappointing Audio

The video quality is really good - HD quality. I am very disappointed in the audio. It is the same as the Platium Series regular DVD - no rear channel sound, absolutely no sub-woofer bass. Right / Left, and center channels only - 3.0, not 5.1.
