    Synopsis

    Boogie Nights
While set within the milieu of the Los Angeles adult film industry, Boogie Nights is less a film about pornography than the serio-comic story of a group of misfits, losers, and lost souls who are embraced by Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds), a director who makes "adult films, exotic motion pictures." In 1977, while hanging out at a disco, Jack spots Eddie (Mark Wahlberg), the new busboy at the club, and tells him he's convinced "there's something wonderful inside those jeans waiting to get out." Jack knows his business well and his expert eye has not betrayed him; Eddie is a pornographer's dream -- good looking, remarkably endowed, and willing and able to do as many takes as might be needed. The product of a woefully dysfunctional upbringing, Eddie is not terribly bright but is very ambitious and eager to prove he has a "special something" to share with the world. Eddie changes his name to Dirk Diggler and quickly becomes the biggest star in hardcore. Working alongside "Dirk" in Jack's films are Amber Waves (Julianne Moore), a porn actress who applies her misplaced maternal instincts to anyone who needs nurturing; Rollergirl (Heather Graham), a cheerful but blank-faced high school drop-out who never removes her roller skates; Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly), a none-too-bright actor, aspiring magician, and failing songwriter; Buck (Don Cheadle), a black actor fascinated with cowboy iconography who wants to open a stereo shop; Scotty J (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a stocky and awkward soundman infatuated with Dirk; Little Bill (William H. Macy), Jack's assistant director, who has trouble dealing with his wife's brazen infidelity; and Colonel James (Robert Ridgely), Jack's backer, who has a weakness for young girls. In the brief, late-'70s moment when porn was chic and sex films seemed poised to break into the mainstream, Dirk becomes a star and Jack a respected name. But a few years later, drugs and pride have taken their toll on Dirk and many of his friends, while the advent of the VCR radically changes the adult movie business; Jack goes from being a "filmmaker" to manufacturing and wholesaling videocassettes, a wealthy but emotionally broken man. In his second film, wunderkind director Paul Thomas Anderson juggled a broad range of characters in a manner reminiscent of Robert Altman's ensemble films, making Boogie Nights a sad but funny story of a makeshift family of damaged people and what happens before and after their brief moment in the sun. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

      What a Ride!

I'm actually quite surprised that I was at the local movie theater on opening night back in October of 1997 when Boogie Nights was released, and I still recount the experience as being blatantly 'surreal'. 18 years old at the time, and not able to talk any of my friends into going to see the film, I ventured into the theater alone, wondering what all the 'hype' was surrounding this new and controversial film I had read about in the papers. The theater, although not nearly full, did have a decent turn out, but while I was personally intrigued by and engrossed in the film, I couldn't help but notice that about 75% of the audience had left prior to film's end. The only assumption I can make is that those people thought 'Boogie Nights' was going to be a disco/dancing type of movie something along the lines of 'Saturday Night Fever'. Well, it's not and my feeling is that most of those people didn't read anything about the film or its plot before deciding to go and see it on opening night. 'Boogie Nights' is in no way a picture for everyone, especially those under the age of 18. In it we see, in dark comedic form, the tragedies the pornography industry inflicts on most of its subjects. Contrary to select public opinion, I found this film to in no way be an endorsement for the pornographic industry, if anything I found it a deterrent, and a substantially well done deterrent at that. I can't necessarily recommend going out and buying this one (especially if you have kids that you don't want seeing it), but it really is a movie that is worth at least one viewing (or several, if you have friends to watch it with who enjoy the film's witty dialogue). This movie, much like the film 'the Big Lebowski,' is loaded with profanity and obscene comments, but the delivery in most instances is so well done and so comical, one really can't help but laugh uncontrollably. It's not really a movie you will enjoy as much watching it by yourself, but viewing it with friends will make for a 'wild ride' of a time!

I don't know what the guy is talking about, giving this movie a 3/5. I never write reviews, but his was so misinformed that I felt compelled to write one in this Blu-Rays defense. There is NOTHING wrong with this audio, it has a near perfect soundtrack with plenty of bass (and I didn't even have to upgrade to the TK-421 modification!). There must be something wrong with his speakers or receiver, because I heard every beautiful song through all 5 channels, and sub. My receiver displayed "Dolby TrueHD" and the source was 5.1 The video is even better than the audio. Don't listen to CincinnatiDan, he has no idea what he's talking about. Here are some more in-depth and professional reviews of this film. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Boogie-Nights-Blu-ray-Review/5389/

This is an excellent movie in general. It is a great character drama. Don't listen to the one who gave this Blue Ray's audio poor ratings. His system must be not working properly. I played this on my Panasonic Blue Ray player, to my Onkyo tx-nr905, to my Paradigm studio v4's with ultra cube 10 subwoofer. The Dolby True HD mix is top notch. Plenty of surround action, thundering bass. Every little nuanced sound shows exactly where it is supposed to be! If you have or have seen the dvd, just get the Blue ray, you won't be disappointed. To those who have not seen the movie. This is a great character drama with highs and lows. Here is a link to high def digest's review for more info: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=306151

This was such a good movie that I had to double dip when it came out on Blu-Ray. Based loosely on the story of John Holmes who went from a nobody in the 70's to an adult film superstar... and then tragically downhill after overindulging in the excesses of the 80's. Mark Walhberg does an excellent job playing the main character, Dirk Diggler, and is supported by an all star cast with Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, John C Reilly, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, William H Macy, Don Cheadle, and Heather Graham. The picture quality is a definite upgrade over the DVD and the excellent soundtrack will sound totally groovy on your Hi-Fi system. Lots of nudity and adult subject matter so watch it when the kids are not home.

Boogie nights gives great insight into the excess, that was the seedier movie industry in the early days of the 70's. Tracked through the main characters trials and tribulations (Dirk Diggler), from a nobody - to superstar - to less than nothing (by his own doing). The clothes, hairstyles, talk, behavior, music, and excess of the 70's are captured beautifully. The acting is top notch, and the no holds barred, subject matter makes this movie so compelling. It's NOT glamourous.. it was the reality of those days.

This is an absolutely amazing film about the rise and decline of the industry in the 1970s and early 1980's. PTA shines thoroughly here in a film that he was probably extremely interested to make because of his great interest in this industry and its history. The ensemble of characters in this film also make it amazing.

Boogie Nights is Paul W. Anderson's stunningly-realized film about the ups and downs of the "adult film" industry in the period of the late 1970s-early 1980s. Great cast, including Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore and Heather Graham, the movie is never less than riveting, and looks great on HD Blu-Ray.

Boogie Nights is a classic of 90's cinema portraying the rise and fall of 70's adult film star Dirk Diggler as played by Mark Wahlberg. The gang romps their way to success in the 70's only to suffer the consequences of their excess in the 80's. Brilliantly written and directed, a must see!
