Great computer speaker, but price is high
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had read all the reviews about this product from Best Buy or other web. My option are Audioengine 5+, Bose Companion 20, Bose Companion 5, Logitech z623, and Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. My brother is hardcore gaming, he buy all the speaker I list. But I only do music and movie with little game. After try them all at Best Buy, I decide to go with Bose Companion 5, sound better in almost every ways. Bose Companion 5 great for music and movie, but not for gaming. It's great speaker but no great on the price, a little too hight. There's no speaker out there that could compare to Bose Companion 5; however, Audioengine 5+ is great too but you need audio tuner to play like Bose Companion 5. The tuner cost about $170 for Audioengine 5+. I recommend you get 2 years insurance when you buy the product, it only $50. But it will save you in the long run after 1 year warranty. If you looking for computer speaker for music, movie, and little game. This will make is great speaker. But if you are hardcore gaming, this might not be for you. There are other speaker out there, look above, for you.

pricey but good
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Was looking for a good speaker system to put on my wife's computer. She had a set fo small Logitechs but she loves music and I wanted to get the best system I could for her. Had previously gotten the Klipsch system and very good but a little muddy in my opinion. Decided to give the Bose Companion 5's a shot. In short, she is ecstatic. Setup was a breeze (USB). Speakers are very stylish. Good bass punch. Great separation. However, the best feature is the clarity of the upper mid and high range. She has had complaints about not being able to really hear the upper range with some of the systems, but these are crystal clear. Easy controls, great sound - just wish the proce was a little less, but you are paying for the Bose name to an extent. Very pleased with the purchase.

You've never heard your music like this...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was deciding between getting this model and the Companion 3. I am very happy with my decision. It's amazing that this kind of sound can come out of speakers so small. For a 2.1 system, it uses pretty brilliant technology. It feels like the music is all around you. The sub is not going to wow anyone, but it compliments the highs of the satellite speakers and fills some of the mid void. Like I said in my title, you've never heard your music until you hear it through the Bose Companion 5. Pretty unbelievable.

Crisp sound, great 5.1 effect!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Companion 5 system includes Bose's proprietary TruSpace surround processing circuitry, which delivers a fairly convincing faux surround-sound experience from only three speakers (you get two satellites, which sit on your desk, and one "hideway" Acoustimass module--a.k.a. subwoofer--that sits on the floor and is the about the size of most similar PC speaker subs). Bose prides the Companion 5 on its easy setup--it requires you to only plug the USB connector into your computer and match up the color-coded speaker wire. There's also a small pod control (a little smaller than a hockey puck) that sits on your desk and has a headphone jack and an input for your iPod or other MP3 player. I would highly recommend this system as your digital entertainment computer solution!

Simply Wow'd
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So, after about a year and a half of talking myself out of buying these things due to the price, I finally broke down and bought them five days prior to this writing and I've since had these speakers operational for about three days. While I haven't put them through every audio test I can think of just yet, I've tried a few DVDs and a good range of my own mp3 files. Before I installed these, I had a Logitech Z2300 system paired with a SoundBlaster X-Fi card...the second such card in 14 months time; it seems for some reason that my computer is getting a little too anxious about blowing digital decoder chipsets on soundcards, which was another reason I finally talked myself into buying them. Now don't get me wrong, I quite enjoyed the previous setup and stand by my earlier review of the Logitech system. But...wow. I'm absolutely blown away by these things. I've had no problems thus far and am amazed by the range that these do, indeed, seem to have. Maybe it's just my ear, but the lack of mid that some reviewers have had issues with is something I see as it's how a live performance is supposed to sound. Sure, if you want everything PERFECTED, then you probably want something else. But actually, to me, that's the hidden beauty of these speakers: They don't "lie". You'll get great response in some ranges, softer tones in others. Nothing really seems to be overly jacked up; it's the suttle tones that I'm noticing, not the overt blasting of those tones, and to me that just makes the sound more "truthful". I listen to soundtracks a lot, and I love hearing every sound I can out of an orchestra...the more finely recreated the better. I am not ashamed to say that, while listening to the John Williams composition of "Duel of the Fates" from the Star Wars Episode I soundtrack, I was left in tears. Tears. Because it sounded so grandly beautiful to a level I've never felt before. The London Voices' echoes were present where I hadn't heard that much definition on them before, the orchestra was so crisply reproduced that I couldn't help but be completely immersed and lost in the tune. This is the third Bose product that I've owned in my life (the original Acoustic Wave, which I still have and is still going strong almost 20 years later and, more recently, the Over The Ear headphones), and I am continually amazed as how great Bose sound is. Yes, of course they're very likely overpriced, but quite simply I am not at all regretful of shelling out the extra money for any of these three products, period. By the way, the owners manual says that you should only have them 24" apart for optimum sound quality. I have dual widescreen monitors and this doesn't seem to have any negative consequences in having them further apart. Very highly recommended, with the only lower-than-5-Star rating going towards price because, as another reviewer said, these are definitely a pocket monster. Otherwise, I have nothing but praise for them and unless they somehow short out (and even at max volume they handle the sound brilliantly) these things will never see the inside of a Best Buy store again.

Better than Companion 20
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this speakers because I wanted to hear music with more bass. Before I bought these speakers I had the companion 20. Companion 20 are ok, but I just didnt like the lack of bass they have. I really enjoy this speakers and I would absolutely buy another set. BETTER EVEN THAN THE LOGITECH Z2300 which I also owned a year ago. So these speakers sound amazing with electronic music (which is the music I regularly like to listen).

best I have ever heard
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love music and I like to hear it loud. I am 63 and wanted to treat myself to something special. I decided that if these speakers were not remarkable compared to what I had they would be returned. They exceeded my expectations. The product justifies the cost. I hear things I never heard before. The voice is singular and not overshadowed by treble. Whether I listen to Sinatra, Jazz, The Beatles, nothing sounds like it used to. It brings a big smile to my face using these speakers. And if you watch Netflix or a movie beware, the sound will blow you away. My kids tell me I play everything too loud. I cannot help myself. This product is dynamic and what I expected from Bose. Setup took about two minutes and I was off to the races. Don't think twice about this purchase. Happy listening!

Trippy little system...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having two computers, I figured the best solution was having two sets of speakers! After already being blown away by the precursor Companion 3s, I figured I'd pick these up for the machine I'd be doing my primary gaming and movie watching on. For music, I'd stick with the 3s, plain and simple. These speakers plug in by USB use a 'TrueSpace' processor that recreates a 5.1 soundstage with dual driver satellites. It works great for games and movies, but almost makes music sound a little TOO spacious. The sound QUALITY I'd say is right on par with the 3s, but the QUANTITY is much greater! The woofer is a little larger, and the 2 extra drivers definately create a convincing 'surround sound effect' even if a Dolby signal is not present! While I wouldn't compare this to a true 5.1 system (as it only has 2 satellites), I will say that for what it is, it ROCKS!!

Awesome sound!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We've had our Bose system for a few months and have put it through the spectrum of audio. Whether listening to classical music that goes from soft flute to blasting cannons, or enjoying the pounding rhythm of dance-workout genre, the Companion 5s have consistently provided excellent sound. While viewing videos voices are clear and understandable. The lows from the base unit are solid and unmuffled, while the desktop speakers provide clear & distinct mid and high tones. The styling is clean and attractive. Setup was a breeze. For the price, they’re a great value: awesome sound from a solid and reputable company.

Bose Series 5 are the best
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I absolutely LOVE my Bose Companion 5, PC speakers! I have had other similar speaker systems and have just been blown away by the sound that comes out of these little speakers. When I watch a movie at home, I pop the DVD into my PC and hook the PC to the TV and its like being at the theater. I have had mine for 3 years now and have never had a problem, knock on wood, so the review below; me I don't know what their problem was but I do know, that like everything in this world that is electronic, its MAN MADE so some items are gonna be bad or go bad quicker than others like cars. Bose is real good about fixing their stuff or replacing it. I have the Bose headphones and love them, so does a buddy and he bought his second hand off of ebay (headphones only no case). 3 months after he had them they broke. He sent them to Bose and not only did they fix them for free they gave him a new case and accessories, all for free! As far as the usb port problem (next review), I use a hub, and I touch the power/vol control pad minutes before use, usually when i'm powering up my PC, so thats just a habit change. My only problem is: if they're not plugged in prior to PC power up, they do not connect and the PC must be restarted but that's also an easy work around. The price is a little steep but your paying for the name, the reputation and above all else: the sound. Price: like exotic sports cars etc. Bose makes a great stereo speaker and yes, there are better stereo speakers made but much, much more money. These speakers have incredible sound for their size and turn up the volume baby, very little distortion, its amazing!!! Heck some people pay $200 or more for dinner for 2 but $400 for speakers with near surround sound capablilties that could last a life time, not just one night??? come on now.... I would have been happier had they been atleast $100 less, but I am happy with them nonetheless! In my humble opinion, you can't go wrong! I'm off to buy the Companion 2's for work so I can rock when no one is around!!! Go to Bestbuy and have listen for yourself, listen to the others that are there, I plug them in to my phone and play my music, I'd settle for a less pricy system, but not for sound, I want both!

Bose ROCKS!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I started with the Companions set 17 years ago, and then went to the Companion 3 set 10 years ago and finally the Companion 5 the end of last year. This set gives me the sound quality and almost the volume level of my 901's! I setup music and let it go, it sounds great. I tried other other manufactures speaker sets (stating to be as good as Bose), but none were.

Great Purchase/Awesome Sound
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought these Bose Speakers mainly for my computer to watch movies and play games with great sound. I use these speakers to listen to music more than I use my Passanic audio system. I could not ask for a better speaker system. The design bose uses makes it feel like I have 5 speakers in my room. The music or any sound feels like its surround sound when its just 2 speakers and a sub. The sub hits really good, you will really experience movies and game play. I feel like im in the action.

Outstanding Speakers- Proper Settings Required
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I first got the speakers, they didn't sound good. Through research, I learned it was because the settings on my computer were wrong. With standard speakers, you may have tweaked your computer settings, adjusted the equalizer, added surround sound, or checked the box in iTunes "Sound Enhancer." These speakers are so good, they don't need any help, & require you to remove all sound enhancing settings, set the EQ to 'flat,' un-check iTunes "Sound Enhancer" box, disable any surround sound or other effects on the computer. It's sad people hear tinny bad sound (caused by surround sound on top of surround sound), blame & return the speakers, then badmouth them to others, missing out on the truly great $400 experience. Because the speakers generate their own surround sound, you feel like you in the middle of music, & movies come alive.

Super bass
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. With this product being bose, you know it will deliver. And that it does. Nothing compares to the loud, deep bass that comes out of these speakers. It's a little pricey but definitely worth it. The speakers even have a sleep mode where it will recognize that it is not in use and power down. The only downside is that the speakers are confined to my computer. I would love it if I could connect these to my TV. But sadly, you need a connection that doesn't come with the speakers.

Great Sound!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got this right after Christmas 08 and everything has been great. Install was a snap, forgot about the mute remote. Thought I had a problem at first but realized it was on mute... Great sound and bass, the sound actually does sound like it surrounds you. Wish it could be hooked up to a small office TV but not a big issue. Price is a little high, but the sound and the name "BOSE" means alot.

Great Speakers
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought these to replace a 12 year old pair of Sony's that were given to me and there is an immediate difference. I could not believe how good my CD's sound and I'm pleasantly pleased that I can connect my iPod directly into the volume control. This is great if you don't feel like firing up the PC. Best of all is the speakers don't take up much space at all!!!
