    Amazing Sound

I love the sound coming from these speakers. At first I was skeptical about buying it since it's a system that's been out for many years. However, once I got it in my room and plugged in, I was blown away. The volume control dial is COOL! With a touch top, you simply tap it and it mutes and tap it again and music comes out. The speaker stands are nice and made out of metal (I thought they were going to be flimsy stands that would fall easily), and IT ALL CAME PUT TOGETHER, no building of anything! My only down part was the size of the subwoofer. It is a little long, not wide, so just keep an eye out for that. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

Just upgraded from a whole set of 5300e logitechs and i can tell you there is almost a complete difference in quality the speakers themselves have problems with my xbox 360 controller i have hooked up to my computer but other than that a great product quality wise i just wise that they weren't usb so that my sound card wouldn't go to waste. 4 stars because its usb and that creates lots of conflicts with other usb electronics.

    Great Item, best speakers around

These are the best computer speakers around, no question about it. I use them with my laptop and the sound quality is perfect for music and movies. The only negative is that sometimes the music just stops (probably because I have it plugged into a laptop and not a desktop), but all i need to do is unplug the device and then plug it back in and it works perfectly again.

    Another winner from Bose

I bought these speakers after having a pair of Bose headphones for years. Although they are a little pricey, they have outstanding audio quality and superior directional ability for surround sound. I use them with a 27" iMac, so the connection to my Mac is over USB. I did a little adjusting on the Mac side to how they output, but I find a radical improvement with the directional output when watching a movie with surround sound. I love the simplicity of the volume knob and the power that you can get by turning it up all the way, without any heavy decrease in quality. Only issue is occasional disconnect from my Mac. To fix this, I power the whole unit off for a few minutes and disconnect every cable. After a restart of my Mac, the unit returns to normal functionality.

    Louder please

Sound is great. Installation is a breeze. The only disappointment I had is that for the money you spend, I think it should be much louder. When you start to max the volume, you'll notice that the bass cuts out and the highs sound as if they're straining. as long as you don't expect this to sound like their line of home theater systems, then you won't be disappointed. Thanks,

    Bose never fails to impress

I just recently bought a desktop computer as well as a 1080tv and blu-ray player. So i wanted sound that would could be used for both and that was easy to set up for both units without having to undo all the cords. This system I thought would work. It does for the desktop but connecting it to my blu ray player was a pain due to the connections available. The volume/mute control thingie is great; it has an aux port. This was the only way I was able to connect my text to my TV and I even got lucky there because my tv has av outputs. Anywho, keep in mind that this system should be for computers unless you have a device that works with an AUX input. As for the price and what you get for it... I like Bose. I have never been dissatisfied with the quality of sound. It is a bit pricer but I think it worth it. I would say this sound system markets a prosumer customer base.

They were nice for almost 2yrs

I'd suggest buying a warranty, if you decide to get these. I've had mine close to 2 years. There starting to stop working, At this point I've got them un-plugged from my kitchen computer, I plug them in when I want to watch a movie, or listen to music. Trying to game with them on, is an issue that just started to happen. I had BOSE 3 headphones and those stopped working after 4 yrs. I have a cheap set of Logitech's in my bedroom with my old pc. Their over 4yrs old and still run great. Not the same quality in sound as the BOSE, but their still functioning. I've learned my lesson, especially with BOSE. I think BB's longest warranty is 4 yrs. so that wouldn't have helped with the head phones. I didn't think I would need it for speakers since I never turn the volume all the way up nor are their moving parts except for the vol. control. Which I rarely move. I only used the touch pad for mute.

    GOOD PRODUCT

THIS IS A GOOD PRODUCT NOT A GREAT PRODUCT. I THINK THE REASON WHY THIS SELLS FOR SO MUCH IS BECAUSE OF THE NAME ON THE BOX. IF THIS WAS ABOUT $250 I THINK IT WOULD BE WORTH IT. SINCE IT IS NOT, UNLESS YOU HAVE A LOT OF PAPER (MONEY) TO SPEND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT.

Great speaker while it works, bit pricey.

I bought mine in April 2009 and hooked them up to my Mac. The sound out of them is great for such a small package, and the soundstage processing by the module works rather well overall. You can pump up the volume to quite high levels without distortion and the subs can make the floor rumble a bit. While the USB connection eliminates worries about if "my sound card is good enough", it does sometimes go crazy and require a "unplug everything and reboot" to fix. Also now, on June 2011, my Companion 5's seem to have quit working. The green light is on, and no sound - from USB or analog input. Bose only has a 1-yr warranty, so into the trash they'll end up going. :( A shame for Bose's brand name and something that costs $350-400. The pricing is a bit on the high side, I think they'd be better price at around $250.

    Good Speakers

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I like the system but the speakers start to mess up when you go to loud, after 1 hour of listening to music it starts to echo, like fade in and fade out to much. Also when i turn up the sound on the system the bass fades, that needs to be fixed people would appreciate it if they can get more bass with it also being loud. Another problem is after half a year of having the system, the circle thing that you turn the volume up with goes orange ( meaning it's on mute ) without me putting it on mute... What i recommend it for Bose to come out with a Bose Companion 7 Multimedia Speaker System. Bigger Bass and Reliability is basically what the customers need.

    Go with Companion 3

Well for the last few years I have owned the pre-cursor to the Companion 3 speakers and LOVED them. So when I got my new computer I figured I would upgrade to the Companion 5 and after listening to them at a Bose store I thought they would be a great upgrade. Boy was I wrong!! Upon listening to them at home I couldnt stand them, they sounded way too processed, sure they had a big soundstage but it all sounded very fake, like turning on a bunch of processed effects. So I returned them and purchased the Companion 3s and they were much better since they dont have the processed soundstage. If you want the processed soundstage just download the SRS WOW. The Companion 5's are not audiophile quality while the 3's are.

AWESOME... But plug it into a HUB

I had to figure out why the BOSE speakers weren't working when i plugged it directly into my system... UNTIL i went searching on the internet... and found the solution. You HAVE to use a USB Hub in order for these babies to work to their full potential. Mostly because they use ALOT of power. I plugged them directly in an 8 port HUB and now they are working just fine without any distortion and some killer sound.... GET THESE IF YOU WANT TO MAKE YOUR NEIGHBOR'S WALLS RUMBLE!

    Disappointed.

Before I purchased these speakers I went online and read various reviews. There were some that praised this system as being one of the best out there and there were other that dismissed it completely as being one of the worst. I tried these speakers in the store and they did not sound bad at all with the pre-set audio tracks they played. Once I took these home it was a completely different story. These speakers are not bad, they're not good, they're just OK. I played several different tracks and in some of them I could barely hear the vocals and in others the instruments that I should be hearing were non-existent. I will say that these speakers have decent bass and they can get very loud with little to no distortion. I tested these against the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 and the Klipsch far out perform the Bose Companion 5 at less than half the price. Unfortunately because of the poor performance and steep price I cannot recommend these to anyone when there are much better options for several hundred dollars less.
