I don’t think you can talk about top tier noise canceling earbuds without talking about Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra earbuds. Bose is a household name when you talk about speakers and for those who enjoy headphones. Noise canceling earbuds have been a competitive market for some time and I think Bose is a brand to consider. I’ve been walking around with these for several days in my pocket as my every day carry earbuds. Whether it’s taking them out and jamming to music with active noise canceling when I need to focus for work or the aware mode when talking with my parents on the phone as I’m shopping for groceries, I have earbuds on me. The case is small and fits nicely in the small pocket on the side of my jeans. The ear buds fit very snugly in the case and would likely take a hard jolt to get them to pop out. There’s actually a very specific way I have to grip them to get them out, which at first was frustrating, but now, I can easily remove them, and I can appreciate the snug fit. Aside from being USB type C for charging, the case itself can use wireless charging as well. Battery life was pretty good. I listened to music for hours without worrying about battery life. The buds themselves fit very snugly in the ear and use both a silicone umbrella to hold itself in your ear, but there’s also a silicone piece that you can swap out that goes just in the outside of the ear to help hold it in place. I can’t wear any ear buds all day without some discomfort, but I can easily rock these for hours listening to music, podcasts, and just existing in the world with these wearables. Navigating play and pause, skipping songs, and adjusting volume is all done through the capacitive surface of the stem. It’s very responsive to a light touch without feeling like you have to push it into your ear and the controls are intuitive. These sound fantastic. I’ll preface this with saying I’m not an audiophile, but I do appreciate great sounding earbuds. Bass is something that can be a bit difficult to come through well in earbuds just due to the size of the drivers, but I’m convinced companies have figured out how to move past limitations, Bose being no different. Bass sounds amazing, has depth and clarity, not muffled or distorted. Even listening to different surround sound demos, you can hear the details much like you would if you were sitting in a theatre. Active noise canceling just enhances that experience by isolating you from the outside world and removing noise and distraction for full immersion. Phone call audio is crystal clear as well, folks on the other end reported being able to hear me clearly. The active noise canceling from these are great. When active, the surrounding sounds are muffled. In a room with the TV going with a sound bar and surround sound as well as people talking in the room, I hear almost nothing from the TV and the conversations are but muffled sound in the background, if I hear them at all. It’s only when you switch to “aware” mode that you realize how much sound it actually cancels out. The aware does a really good job of natural sound pass through. You kind of forget that you’re wearing earbuds, until you talk that is. I wish they were better at not making it sound like you have your fingers in your ears. They’re trying and it’s not quite that “talking in your head” bad, but I just wish it was better. I imagine improvements down the road can help because the noise canceling seems good enough they could feedback that natural sound. It’s by no means a deal breaker and I don’t find it nearly as annoying as some others I’ve tried that do much worse in this respect. Bose has put together an intuitive and easy to use app. It has all of what you would expect. Customization of the touch controls, a very basic EQ, but also lots of control on how much noise canceling you can get, immersive audio which detects the position of your head compared to your device and gives you the illusion you’re walking around a room filled with your music. You can create your own custom level of noise canceling and set it as a mode. Multi point connection allows you to connect to two different devices and switch as needed. In the settings you can also check the ear fit using a fit test that plays a sound to test the seal, as well as instructions on how to swap out the ear tips or the fit bands that go around the buds. There was a moment when I was using them that the noise canceling bugged out in one of the ear pieces and had a persistent static. I was able to put them back in the case to power cycle them then they’ve been fine since then. I’d love to have an EQ that has more range of adjustment. I tried a few different wireless chargers and you have to kind of kick it around on the pad to find when it’s lined up enough to charge. Most newer phones are moving to magnetic alignment with Qi 2 charging, it would just make it more convenient to have that in other wireless charging devices. None of these are by any means are deal breakers as the sound and quality far outweigh these suggested improvements. The impressive bass and clarity of sound from these are easy to recommend. Sleek design and intuitive and easy to use controls and app make it an easy every day carry companion.

Great Earbuds but Controls are Frustrating

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) These 2nd generation earbuds from Bose give a quality appearance all around, from the buds themselves to their charging case. They came with the medium ear tips, and for me they fit just right. By twisting them into the ear so that the long tip of the bud points between the 4:00 o’clock and 5:00 o’clock position on the ear they remain firmly in place and are quite comfortable for several hours. They paired up very quickly with my laptop and my Android phone in that order. For whatever reason, and it may just be something on my equipment, once they paired with my phone I went back to my laptop to watch a video, but the earbuds didn’t follow to my laptop naturally as I expected. I tried connecting them manually to my laptop but that didn’t work, and I finally disconnected them from my phone, but the problem remained. I then removed the earbuds from being paired with my phone altogether. The earbuds still didn’t want to connect to my laptop, so I then took them out of my ears and placed them back in their case for a minute. After that they connected and worked fine with my laptop. To be fair, this isn’t the first issue I’ve had using BT earbuds in the past and moving from one device to another. Overall, my BT experience hasn’t been easy over the years so, who knows? I’ve found that the earbuds last between 5.0 to 5.5 hours on a charge using them watching videos for several hours or listening to music in the Aware Mode – that’s in the same ballpark with the Technics and the Jabra earbuds I have. Using ANC during that same time would use a more battery life. While mentioning ANC, noise cancellation is absolutely superb! If you want nothing else but your selection of sound coming to your ears, the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) is what you’ve been looking for. In addition, choosing the Spatialized Audio setting really adds more depth and detail to what you’re listening to so I would use that setting and not change it! Along with these things, the sound quality is excellent with wide ranges of different clear and sharp sounds whether in low or high tones. Obviously, I’m not an audiophile, but the quality of sound produced in these earbuds is excellent. The real problem I have with the QuietComfort Ultras (2nd Gen) is that the physical controls on the buds are so sensitive and “fiddly.” The individual taps (whether one tap, two or three for various things) isn’t too difficult but there again sensitivity sometimes messes things up if you’re not really consistent with your taps in terms of how quickly you perform them. I actually had more trouble with setting the modes (ANC, Aware and several others) by doing a longer press for each one to move through each mode with a little voice telling you what each mode is when you’ve moved to it. Sometimes it was distracting and hard to understand what mode the little voice was actually saying. In addition, to raise or lower volume you slide your finger along the long side of the earbud one way or the other, and moving it very much puts you with virtually no sound or way too much sound. To complicate matters some of your slides may be interpreted as taps or longer presses so you may end up pausing your video instead while you’re trying to raise the volume or lower it or you may end up with a mode change you're not looking for. Now, I realize that over time some of this would smooth out some, but the sensitivity of the exterior of the earbuds and not having a physical button there to work with is something that will detract from the overall ease of use of the controls for most people. And who wants to even think about having to grab your phone for help from the Bose app for some of these things. I think Bose should have worked with a physical button on the earbuds themselves to eliminate all the sensitivity of the various taps, presses and slides we’re left with now. Are these excellent earbuds? Yes, in most ways. But having a simple and easy way to control them to provide what you need at a moment’s notice is expected but their choice of a control mechanism is simply a detraction from an otherwise excellent product.

Hello Jayson! Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We’re glad to hear that your Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) Earbuds are working well and delivering the performance you expect. We do understand your concern regarding the case not holding the earbuds securely. Your input is valuable, and we truly appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

To help prevent the earbuds from coming loose, we recommend always ensuring they are seated properly in the charging case until you feel the magnetic connection. If the case is dropped, the earbuds may dislodge, so keeping the lid closed when not in use can help minimize this risk.

We appreciate your support and will make sure your feedback is shared with our product team for future improvements.

Hi Letisha, thank you for sharing your feedback. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) have a battery life of up to 6 hours with Immersive Audio off, up to 4 hours with Immersive Audio on, and up to 18 hours when using the charging case at full charge. If your earbuds are delivering shorter playtime compared to these specifications, you can check out this helpful link for guidance: https://bose.life/3YvcMu8

If the earbuds still show as connected while in the case, it usually means they are not properly seated. Please check the charging pins inside the case and ensure the ear tips are correctly placed on the earbuds so they sit securely and charge properly.

The earbuds were honestly pretty uncomfortable, I tried every variation and still couldn’t wear them for more than 30 mins without my ears hurting or having to adjust, also when I would adjust the touch settings are so sensitive I would either end a call or skip a song, and I couldn’t even tell if the audio quality was good because of the connectivity issues, there was always a delay or the earbuds wouldn’t connect.

Thanks for your feedback! One of the new features of the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) is the ability to disable touch controls through the Bose Music app, a great improvement over the first generation.

Bluetooth disconnections can happen due to several factors, including wireless interference, distance from the paired device, low battery levels on either device, or outdated software.
