    Awful!!!!

This printer is awful! I've had it for 2 years. I was never able to fax anything and now it won't print with all new ink cartridges and after cleaning the printer heads. I bought this because I had good experience with another brother printer. It lasted for 10+ years. This one is terrible! I wouldn't recommend it to my worse enemy!

    Broke immediately...

Unboxed it, inserted ink, and started initial setup. Setup fails and says one cartridge is low. It tells me to take it out and reinsert it (on the printer screen itself). During the setup it decided to leak the entire blue ink cartridge inside the printer. Now my hand and cabinet are blue.

Hello James, We apologize the broke cartridge broke immediately.

Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic ink or refill their Brother ink cartridges. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability since the ink formulation in genuine Brother ink cartridges prevent smearing and clogging of the print head. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that was caused by the use of unauthorized third party ink and/or cartridges.

If the ink cartridge is new and has not been installed into the machine, please do not install the ink cartridge. Place the ink cartridge back into the ink cartridge packaging and contact Brother Customer Service.

If the ink cartridge has been installed into the machine and ink has leaked inside the machine, do not remove the ink cartridge from the machine. Contact Brother Customer Service.

    printer jamming

This printer constantly jammed right out of the box. After an hour of continuous jams the last one tore the paper in the back rollers with no way of getting it out. All the other functions worked well but unfortunately the printer is unusable due to the unreliability. I will be returning.

This is the worse printer you can ever purchase. The paper gets stuck every single time you make an attempt to print. You have to pull the papers out of the back, before the next paper can print. It makes a noise when is printing and takes a very long time to print each page.

Color quality is trash, the printer is unbelievably slow, jams print jobs then restarts them and keeps printing countless copies all on its own. Complete waste of money, especially if you're using the color copies for work purposes.

Hi Eddie, I understand you are experiencing issues with the print quality from your Brother MFC-J497DW. When printing images, the image's resolution affects the final quality of the printed document. Many web images and pictures taken with mobile device cameras, are not suitable for printing because of low image resolution. Images that show compression artifacting (distortion), dithering, or other image imperfections when viewed on your monitor or mobile device, are likely not print quality and any distortions seen will affect the final print output.
The lower the image resolution, the smaller the print size must be to maintain acceptable quality.

      Examples:

      - A 72 DPI image can only be printed up to 6 x 8 without distortion.

      - For 8 x 10 prints, your image should be at least 300 DPI to be printed without distortion.

Other than this model, I have purchased about 5 brother printers over the years and been quite satisfied. This model is terrible!!!! It runs thru print cartridges like water, it can't print double-sided about half the time, the paper feed does not work well, and it is very slow.

    • Brand response from Brother

Hello, stated page yields for genuine Brother cartridges are based on the ISO testing standards. The number of pages that can be printed with a cartridge is affected by several factors, including paper size, number of pages per print job, amount of print on each page, font size, and print content (graphics, charts, etc.). Print jobs with large text fonts, graphics, charts, and/or large amount of solid coverage (black or any given color) will use much more toner and will shorten the life of the toner cartridge. We will be glad to work with you regarding the issues you are experiencing with printing duplex and paper feed issue. Please contact us by Email or Live Chat.
