Easy to use, a few issues
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very easy to use , just a few issues I had with this printer. One, you can't wire it directly into a router or modem (though you can through USB though that port is inside the printer and hard to find. Two, The top tray on the printer is not an alternate loading area for paper, but rather for FAX. None of these are deal breakers but were things I would have wanted to know before buying.

Meh. Not too bad.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It says it will handle legal-sized paper. It won't. It's connected to WiFi and even though my iPhone sees it, it will not print. After waiting to print, it says the printer isn't connected even though it is. Otherwise, it's a good printer. It prints from my PC (connected via WiFi) just fine and is quick.

So far, so good!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got this little all-in-one printer this afternoon on the recommendation of the Best Buy sales guy. Great price, good features, nice size. Setup was a breeze. Printed out a 20 page color document in duplex. Good quality print and no paper jam issues. So far, so good!

Good for home use
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased this printer yesterday from Best Buy. Sales clerk was helpful and answered all my questions. I set up printer for use with my Apple devices and it was very easy especially for me for being well over 70 years of age and not a computer person. I use a printer once or twice a month so not a very heavy user except in September when I will have to link my Dell laptop to it, at that time I will come back and let you know how I made out. I gave it 4 stars because the print quality is not as sharp as my old HP desk-jet but good enough for what I use it for.

Brother MFC-J497DW All in one printer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.i bought this printer over a year ago, keep getting paper jam error after printing 20-30 pages, but there is not paper jam...followed all instructions for clearing a paper jam, reloaded software, cleaned printer heads, all to no avail. When this printer works it is great, but if you get the paper jam error, it is a wrap! would not recommend this printer, price is right and ink is expensive! Buyer beware!

Uses ink when not printing; could be better
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. While it is nice to have a very affordable multi-function printer and affordable ink cartridges as well (bonus points for individual color cartridges) this printer has a few issues. We have printed hardly anything in color, yet the color ink seems to be disappearing -- this printer is an ink-craving monster! At first it ran out of yellow, but it said I could keep printing with black, which was perfectly fine by me. But after a while, it'll randomly decide that you MUST replace the empty color cartridges to continue printing in black. This is unfortunate when you have something time-sensitive you need to print and weren't expecting this behavior. So, I replaced the yellow, proceeded to only print text documents after that, and now it's out of cyan. It hasn't been printing test pages, so where is all the ink going? Another annoyance is the difference between how the printer drivers that come with Windows (or through Windows Update) as opposed to the Brother drivers: they have different behavior when ink levels are low. One lets you print, the other doesn't. I'm trying to avoid installing the Brother software since it's a bunch of unsigned, strangely-named executables (as well as something called "PowerEngage" that probably gathers telemetry data about you) but there doesn't seem to be a good way around that. More recently, I changed the IP address range for my home router, but I believe the printer automatically configured itself with a static IP address instead of a dynamic one, which was completely unexpected. I think I'd rather have a color laser printer than this cheap printer, even if (or especially because) I print infrequently.

Posted .Hi Kevbo, The machine will use a small amount of ink from each cartridge during regular cleanings to maintain optimal print quality. If the machine is unplugged or displays a "Replace Ink" message for an extended period, the nozzles may clog. Clogged nozzles will affect the print quality and the machine will require cleanings to recover the print quality. The cleanings will consume ink and reduce page yield. Brother recommends replacing the requested ink cartridges within the 4-week period to maintain print quality. The entire print driver does not have to be installed. You can install only the printer driver. PowerEngage is a part of the Brother Online Registration Process. Please contact us at 1-877-BROTHER for more detailed information.

Piece of garbage
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got this printer yesterday, and it started out printing just fine. Today, I printed about 5 pages ok and then the printer all of a sudden gets stuck on "retrieving data, please wait" screen. It has been stuck on that screen for almost 2 hours and no matter what I do, it doesn't help. Piece of garbage didn't even last 24 hours. I needed a printer, not a paper weight for my desk. This is the first Brother product I have ever owned, and it will definitely be my last! Do yourself a favor and buy a real printer, not this one!

Terrible Printer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My family bought this printer a few weeks ago, and I used it maybe four times and now it won't printer. The printer keeps getting jammed for no reason and then after I remove the paper jam that the pick-up roller needs to be cleaned. On top of all that it keeps destroying all the paper I put in it so even when I can get it to print the paper comes out crumpled up and the print job is side ways and half of its not there. This is the worst printer I have ever seen DO NOT BUY IT!

Posted .Hi, Oh no! That's not what we like to hear. I know this is frustrating. I'd like to help. Paper jams can be caused if you are using the wrong paper type or if the paper is inserted in the tray incorrectly. I also understand your printer is not printing. I will NEVER buy another brother product again!!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I only lefta one star review because it wasn't possible to give a zero star review! All in all terrible experience from the get go! I bought this printer and printed of a couple sheets of paper with it surprisingly trouble free then I was in the process of moving so it didn't get used in a while, then after trying to use it again all the colored ink was somehow completely empty, and it won't let you print with just black ink, which is a big downfall, so I purchased all brand new ink, then again after just a few pieces of paper it was printing very poor quality pages! :( So I then ran the printer through a printerhead cleaning and before the printer was even usuable again it had ran itself completely out of two colors of ink already! So then I finally tried to call customer service and after about a half an hour on hold, I finally got a customer service representative, that spoke very broken English and was not helpful at all! I'm stuck with a printer that has printed about 4 sheets of paper on two sets of ink and they wouldn't do anything because it was out of warranty! So needless to say I will NEVER and I repeat NEVER buy another brother product ever again, and I will make sure to let as many people as possible know about my poor experience with brother printer and company!!! Really the only thing this printer might be good for is to be used as a boat anchor!

Don't get this machine
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Print quality is okay, but this machine can only print 10-20 pages before needing a new black ink cartridge. I've had older brother machines (which I regret not having kept) where the ink cartridges lasted for months. On this model, expect to need new black cartridges every two or three weeks, and that's WITH low volumes of printing. You can do better than this machine, I'm sure.

Posted .Hi, We understand the ink cartridge did not meet your expectations. Stated page yields for genuine Brother cartridges are based on the ISO testing standards. The number of pages that can be printed with a cartridge is affected by several factors, including paper size, number of pages per print job, amount of print on each page, font size, and print content (graphics, charts, etc.). Print jobs with large text fonts, graphics, charts, and/or large amount of solid coverage (black or any given color) will use much more toner and will shorten the life of the toner cartridge.

Worst Printer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Worst printer we've ever had, and of course we didn't buy the Geek Squad protection so we've just had to limp along buying new ink cartridges after about every other print job. From day one this printer has jammed every single time we try to use the duplex print function, which is the reason we purchased it in the first place. It also prints maybe 3 small print jobs, up to 20 pages, per cartridge, and then it stops working because one of the cartridges is out enough to where none of them work, even just the black one. Side note, I wanted to return this right away once we saw that it jammed every time we used duplex, but my husband is the one who purchased it and he has an aversion to returning things. So not only has this printer never worked as promised, it has also caused many arguments in our household!

Frustrating, would not recommend
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my second Brother printer as I thought it got better over time. No way. Printer works. Sort of. It eats ink like crazy. It does not print as many pages ith one cartridge as it claims. Speed is not as advertised either. You cannot print only black and white if any of the other cartridges is not full. The worst thing may be frustration with scanner. Sometimes it works, sometimes it says to connect scanner without changing anything in between. Then, a few days later, it works again. It may not work on one computer today vut ork on another one at the same time. Tomorrow may be the opposite. Unreliable scanner beyond any possible use. I would not recommend this printer to anyone. I would fight with my friends if they tried to buy it.

Worst printer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The worst printer I ever had. I always turn my printer off when I’m finish printing and notice my ink keeps running out so I call brother and they told me not to turn it off when I’m finish printing I did what they say and my ink still running out. When my printer is turn on or off my printer makes sounds like something is printing and it wasn’t in use. I wouldn’t purchase this brand again

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Required me to unplug power and reboot EVERYTIME I wanted to print. BAD! DON'T BUY
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Worked for a while but then ended up not wanting to print anything. Just stopped for no reason. Everything was fine, everything was connected correctly. It just stopped working. Plus found out that when you print in black only, it still uses the colored ink which is a waste. The ink is super expensive. Don't buy this ! Worst printer ever! DONT BUY!

Great until it stops
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We bought this printer, loved it and then it just stopped working completely after about 3 months. It was still under warranty, so we returned it and received a new one. Same thing. Worked great for about 3 months and then just didn't even turn on one day. We've returned it and asked for a gift card to purchase a different brand this time.
