I've been around long enough to use many of the better color photo printers both past and present.In the past ,HP's PhotoSmart line was hard to beat. That's been changed by CANON with their PIXMA line of inkjet printers and their AWESOME line of printer inks.Canon's black ink possibly has the best color density & gradient levels currently available(my opinion,of course!) from ANY MANUFACTURER..BAR NONE !! Canon Black 251 not only has great coverage,but the XL version also provides almost twice the pages printed than Canon's standard 251 Black cartridge ...AND at a MUCH LOWER COST THAN YOU WOULD EXPECT. I found the cost of the HIGH YIELD 251XL Black cartridge was about $23 compared to the 251 Black standard cartridge @ about $14-$15. To me,penny pincher that I am, it's a NO BRAINER to get approximately 600 total pages printed for about $23 (XL version) compared to about 300 pages printed for $14-$15 (the standard 251 BLACK cartridge). I'm sure that you'll agree about the ink's quality. NOT TO MENTION THE EXTRA VALUE YOU WILL FIND FROM THE 251XL CARTRIDGE!! Like the "old man" said..."TRY IT... YOU'LL LIKE IT"(at least as much as I have..again,my opinion) !!! foolishfotoshooter

Best buy has great pricing on ink. The sales rep did caution me to only use the XL if I actually do print a lot in Black, otherwise, the ink will dry out from non-use. I like that he wasn't just trying to sell me on something, but cared about my usage. I have been quite happy with the Canon Pixma printer and the associated ink.

I found the print quality with this ink is outstanding, and it is easy to replace this type of cartridge.

The XL cartridges are the way to go, fitting in the same slot as the regular size in your Canon printer, but giving you extra ink for not much extra cost. Unfortunately, the overall cost of this series of Canon cartridges can be pretty high. I have been pleased with the print results, so it is worth the price. The installation is easy thanks to their push tab design, and the lights on the cartridges tell you that it's snapped in good. I would buy again.

Have you ever been stopped when trying to print a black and white document because your ($60 - $90) "Tri-Color" cartridge had one (or more) of its "wells" run dry? I was just sick and tired of this after dealing with expensive "Tri-Color" cartridge headaches for more than a decade. When I first shopped for new printers last year I found that several brands now utilize 4 (or more) separate ink cartidges for "full-color" printing. I bought the Canon PIXMA MG 5420 and have been VERY HAPPY with ALL of its features and capabilities! AND BEST OF ALL ... The individual color ink cartridges are 20 to 30% of the price of a "Tri-Color" or "XL" Black cartridge!!! ... And, So far, I've only had to replace these (3 out of 5 of the NON-XL) cartridges once(!) entering my second year of ownership of my PIXMA 3-in-1 printer. Yeah, I don't print more than a couple of (to no more than a dozen) pages a week, but at least I haven't had to replace ANY cartridges that just plain WENT DRY sitting in an inactive printer!

I have tried in the past third party ink cartridges. They print well however the chemicals in the ink end up (for me) clogging the inkjet head requiring me to buy another printer. Given the low number of cartridges I use in a year the higher price for better quality ink is well worth it. Canon does fix the price for its ink so all reputable stores sell it at the exact same price. Some stores do have custom "packaging" made by Canon just for their store. These special packaging can include additional cartridges, or glossy photo paper.
