See "Purple fringing" in wikipedia for more, but I saw plenty of it - I returned the lens. Wanted the faster lens for taking pictures at daughter's dance competitions, guess I'll save up and get a better lens.

I LOVE this lens for taking aurora photos - it's FAST, LIGHT, and a GREAT price. I have recommended it to many people interested in find a fast affordable lens. It also takes amazing, dreamy portraits with wonderful bokeh. That being said, I do have two complaints though - one (I would have known, had I researched more thoroughly) it does have a very narrow field of view. - and TWO, and my biggest complaint: It is sloppy, it doesn't stay focused. All it takes is a slight bump of my tripod, or a sharp temperature change, to go out of focus. I have to constantly check the focus to get clear shots. A friend I shoot with all the time, bought the same lens, at the same time, and doesn't seem to have this problem, so I suspect it's a flaw with this particular lens and not with all of the 50mm f/1.8 Canon lenses. Too bad I didn't realize it until after my exchange period had expired.

Excellent lens for low light and portraits

I bought this lens getting ready for the birth of my second daughter, and I have been kicking myself for not buying it before my first child was born. The shallow depth of field is great for getting excellent portraits, and it works well in low-light/indoors without having to use a flash. I usually have this lens attached to my body by default, and only switch to my wider angle or zoom when absolutely necessary. The build quality could be tougher, but for the price you simply cannot beat it. I'm sure the metal-bodied 1.4 is more durable, but I would hope so since it costs 3x as much. Bottom line: If you're wanting a go anywhere, do anything lens on a budget, this is your guy.

I did a lot of research on lenses as I wanted to purchase a new lens without a high cost out of pocket that gave me crisper images. The reviews everywhere said the 50 1.8 was a must have...I AGREE!! I absolutely LOVE the crispness of my photos and the soft Bokah background. I'm still experimenting and learning but the more I use it the more I love it! Don't hesitate to add this lens to your gear, you will not regret it for the price.

I read a ton of reviews and blogs regarding what lens to get to compliment my kit lens, and finally landed on this. This product is the perfect combination of a great piece of gear at a fantastic price. Some have worried about the plastic construction, but I've never had any issues with it and if it should ever break it would be very cheap to replace. The image quality is superb, much nicer than I expected for the price point! Beautiful crisp images, both for still and video, wonderful bokeh, amazing depth of field for a very professional and cinematic look.

    Gotta love the nifty fifty!

I love my nifty fifty I have had it for a little over 7 months. The bokeh this lens produces is very nice for the price tag. My only problem is it seems to REALLY front and back focus a lot, even manually focusing is tough to get it tack sharp sometimes. It could just be my lens but I have also read of many others with this problem. I had one a year or so ago and never had it happen so could just be random. For the price overall it's a great and must have, 1.8 is almost not worth using due to losing a lot of sharpness, it best perform at 2.8 and above. If you have the money I would recomment getting the 50mm 1.4 for around $300-350. But on the plus side, if you get this lens and it has issues atleast you aren't out $1000's. I would recommend this to friends.

I have to say I love this lens, it takes a bit to learn how to use this lens due to the focus point. It's perfect for those who wants a blurry background in pictures. its very light and great to carry everywhere. I use this lens now I dont use the one that comes with it. the picture quality is great.

I'm sure you've seen it in all the photography reviews on youtube... Its literally the best deal in the camera world. The build quality is plastic and cheap but the image quality is nothing short of amazing. The BOKEH is a bit busy and creates hexagonal orbs at night which might not be desirable for some. The 50mm on a crop sensor is close to 80mm and is tough to use in tight spots so if you have a crop sensor please keep this in mind. For the price however, IT CAN'T BE BEAT! Did I mention it's really light too? perfect travel lens.

Great lens in low light. Very lightweight and takes nice sharp photos. I take good care of my equipment. If I was a little rough on my equipment this lens will probably not hold up due to the plastic build.

The first noticeable thing is the rather cheap build on this lens. The finish seemed dirty unless I got a returned one. The focus ring is a little loose, adding to the cheapness. Be careful, as the focus should not be moved unless it is in manual. The bokeh is what I was after. It seems similar to what I can get on 255mm kit zoomed in. At 1.8, the focus was not ideal. Others have mentioned lowering the stop to improve focus, which helps. The bokeh shapes are pentagonal due to the 5 blades. Beginners may want to try this, unless you are loaded to get the 1.4.

This lens is the best bang for your buck on the market! I shoot video in low light constantly and this lens has been a life saver. The image quality is amazing. Definitely a lens everyone should carry. I got this lens for $100.00 and couldn't believe the performance at that price. Highly recommend.

This lens gets some of the best looking shots out of all of the lenses I have used in the past. It forces you to think creatively when planning your shots due to the inability to zoom in or out, and the auto focus feature is a bit loud, but these problems are easy to deal with after a little practice. Overall, this lens gets you some of the best looking images I've seen while still being moderately priced.

I bought this as my first nice piece of "glass" and I would highly recommend it. It's tack sharp & has amazing speed for the lighting as well. I believe it's worth every penny to get this lens & to start taking photos straight away. The photo shown was taken immediately after getting it out of the box & no editing needed.

This is a lens that just cannot be matched for the price. I have this on my 5DMKII and I love it. Some say the plastic construction feels cheap, but it really is a non issue. All of my other lenses are L series lenses and I don't feel like there is any quality issues with the plastic body. I bought it for a trip I was going on because I didn't want to lug around my 24-70 2.8L and it was such a great investment. You won't be disappointed. Size, weight, image quality are all on point. I think the only gripe (small one) would be the small focusing ring. Sometimes there is a need to focus manually, and the ring is way smaller than what I'm used to with my L lenses. I can't say anything else is an issue, and this little detail is only me nit picking. If you want a great lens for the money, you won't regret this purchase.

Great camera lens for a great price. Easily take excellent indoor family portraits without the worry of grainy images. The low f-stop allows you to easily achieve the bokeh (blurred background) effect. This lens does not have zoom capabilities, but for its use I don't feel it's necessary.

I wanted to buy a lens good for taking portraits. I was choosing between 1.4 and 1.8 50mm Canon lenses and decided to go with the 1.8. I gotta say that this is a great value for a quality lens. It takes wonderful photos for those who want a lens that gives you a blurry background when shooting close-up shots of people. Definitely recommend this lens! Much cheaper than the 1.4.
