Great First Prime Lens

This is my first Prime Lens that I bought for my Canon T3i. I was impressed with this little lens starting with my first picture. There is no zoom so you have to use your feet to zoom. This lens seems to go good with taking portraits, but I use it for most everything. A lot of pictures I take are either inside shots or low light. This lens does a lot better with those types of images versus the kit lens that came with my camera. I'm not certain about the durability of the lens because it is made of plastic, but so far it has handle very nicely.

I bought this lens to replace the kit lens for my T3i. This is the perfect lens for a beginner & for a great price! As long as you know how to use your camera to its full potential and know what settings works best for this lens; it will produce awesome quality images. It's definitely a lens to add to your collection. If you're a beginner, don't forget to shoot in RAW :)

Easy 50mm for the money

I love this easy to use 50mm. I use it mostly for newborn sessions and it does great with getting the little details while still blurring out the background. Make sure you have a good spotter for your newborns though because you do have to back up quite a ways to be able to get a full shot.

Very nice lens, love how it blurs out the background, makes pictures look professional and I'm no professional. Light weight and compact, great for portraits. A must have!

I have a number of Canon lenses and this unit provides the same consistent picture quality as all others. I love the wide aperture and compact design. Worth every penny.

Captures sharp, quality photos. A good creative lens that won't break the bank. Provides ability to separate the subject from the background.

I absolutely love this lens. I purchased it right before I went on vacation and the results are awesome, especially in low lighting. I did find that the auto focus is super slow and extremely noisy but for the price, I can overlook those problems. It's mainly annoying when you or your subject are moving and you're trying to focus quickly. The same thing happens while shooting video and if in auto focus, you get a lot of noise in video of lens trying to focus. Because of those two problems, I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

This is one great inexpensive lens. It takes wonderful portrait pictures with excellent background bokeh's,(blurred). The pictures are very sharp. The low light capability makes this a perfect indoor lens. Outside the lens works great for flowers, pets, or landscapes. It is a very small and light lens, so on my Canon SL1 it is a perfect fit.

This little lens is an excellent addition for my or anyone's camera bag. Works well on a Canon 7D, 50D and XS. This auto focus system is not the quietest like USM models. Great in low light with the f1.8. Produces EXCELLENT Bokeh for the price. If you are buying a camera or just need something to experiment with, I definately recommend this lens.

Great addition to your bag for low light situations or for bokeh as long as you don't mind zooming with your feet...

I got this lens for taking portraits and it's perfect for the job. Photos are crisp and clear. It does, of course have it's limitations, but that was no surprise. I am trying to build up a nice collection of different lenses and the pricing on this was perfect. The plastic threading (to attach it to the camera) is my only complaint. Doesn't seem durable and it sticks a bit when trying to remove it.
I have a Canon 60D and was afraid it might not work well with the camera, but so far so good.

This is a great, cheap lens for those interested in using primes or lowlight photography. It creates a nice background blur (bokeh) and works well in low light. It sometimes has some issues with autofocusing and hunting for focus spots but once it locks on the pictures it takes are amazing. A must have for an dSLR kit.

This lens is a great addition to your kit. It will not break the bank and offers image quality of lenses costing many times more.
The nickname for this lens is "Plastic Fantastic" and with good reason. This lens makes very usable images wide open at f/1.8 and is extremely sharp at f/2.8 and above. Auto focus is pretty fast as well.
There are only two minor drawbacks to this lens. The first being the all plastic construction, care must be taken when handling this lens as a hard bump or dropping it would surely break it. I don't want to give the impression that this lens is delicate, with reasonable care this lens should last a long time. The second drawback and more significant in my opinion is the focus ring, which is very slim and can be hard to use when in MF mode. For those with large hands like myself manual focus can be challenging.
Over all this lens is amazing and is a must have for those looking for a excellent prime at an awesome price point. You cannot go wrong with this lens and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

This was a spur of the moment purchase based primarily on price, and it was a recommended lens on one of the photography sites I frequent.
Anyways, my initial thoughts after opening the box, were that it is very small, extremely light and cheap feeling. Very plasticky. Nothing about the feel or appearance would lead you to believe its a quality lens.....But I was COMPLETELY WRONG!
I have the 18-55 kit lens, the 55-250, and the well regarded ($800!!) 15-85mm, and I can say without reservation that this cheap little 50mm prime is the sharpest! I am absolutely stunned by the clarity of this lens every time I load it's images into Lightroom!
I am shooting on an APS-C sensor, so I can't say how it would perform on a full frame, but I do not have many issues with vignetting, or chromatic aberration, both of which are easy to correct for in post processing anyway.
The one thing I had problems with was that being a prime lens, you can't zoom in and out, and 50mm is a focal length that I don't normally use very often. I usually shoot much wider than that, so for me it's hard to "see" a scene and creatively figure out how to compose the shot before me in 50mm... But this is a limitation of mine, not the lens.
Also, this lens does not have image stabilization, but the fact that it is soo fast at f1.8, and the fact that 50mm isn't exactly super telephoto means that that it's easy to keep shutter speeds high, and ISO low, I personally haven't had any problems with the lack of IS
All in all, this is a fantastic little lens, it's so cheap, sharp, and fast that I would recommend this lens to everybody, regardless of the fact that 99% of people probably already have a lens that covers this focal length...unless you have one of the Canon's "L" series zoom lenses that covers this focal length, or one of the more expensive f1.4 or f1.2 variants of the 50mm prime, I can almost guarantee you won't find a sharper lens! And at $125!? Seriously this should be in everybody's bag until they move up into the super high $ "L" series glass

I've only had the lens for a few weeks so I can't speak about how long it will last but in the time I've had it I have nothing but good things to say. The price is great, it takes great pictures, and is very simple to use. It also works great when shooting video. I recommend it highly.

I bought this lens for my daughter who has recently become very interested in photography. She makes a lot of pics of her nephew and felt that this lens would be a great addition to her photography equipment. My other daughter liked it so much, I bought her one for her birthday. I can't speak as to the specifics since I bought it as a gift but I can confirm that the pictures taken with it turn out great!

I got this lens because the guy at Best Buy recommended it for short range shooting of action shots. NOT a good lens for action shots it is not a fast enough lens. So I used it for portrait shoots. I had to get far from my subject in order to get her in. Also, used it for take a group shot of about 45 people and again had to get far away to fit them in. I got up high which helped some. It does take clear photos. But would not have been my first choice. I also used it for a basketball team of 12 girls again had to get 1/2 way across the gym to fit them all in. I would recommend this lens if you don't care about detail in a photo.
