Many appreciate its wide aperture, which creates a pleasing background blur, making it ideal for portraits. The lens is also praised for its affordability and lightweight design. Most BANG for the fewest BUCKS in the Canon range.

While not the equal of its way more expensive siblings, this is an excellent lens at an entry level price. Because of its relatively small size and plastic construction, it is light and adds little weight to the DSLR to which it's attached. Results have run the gamut from pretty good to excellent, and it fits well within the range of the kit lens and a 55-250 telephoto I have added for reasonable cost as well. This 50mm has become the lens I usually keep attached to the camera, so I've taken a lot of shots with it and have been quite pleased overall.

Very nice Bokeh. Price is good for the image quality. As far as durability, I have only had it for 3weeks. I guess we will see. Happy with the purchase.

I purchased for the low f1.8, but now leave it on for all of the photographs I take. Great lens for the price.

The image quality and speed is amazing. For the money this is the best lens you can buy. I have it on my 7D and it out performs many in low light.

When the occasion calls for a close-up or an ethereal film making view, this lens does the trick. Taking it old school with manual focus yet modern with light-weight construction, its a worthy addition to any growing lens collection, particularly for DSLR video production

    Nifty Fifty

The nifty fifty cannot be beat in terms of value. The glass is nice and sharp and the big aperture allows for greater freedom shooting in low light/indoors. While it may be a little long for general use with cropped sensor cameras, it is perfect for portrait shooting. The only downside is the build quality (plastic) but it is to be expected for this price point. Just make sure to keep good care of the glass and you should be golden.

I couldn't be happier. This lens completely changed my understanding of photography and the photos that I've been taking come out simply amazing. I hardly ever remove the lens from the camera anymore. And all this for $100? :-) C.

I LOVE this lens! As soon as I got this lens, I was head over heels in love with it. It is so easy to use and definitely a great starter lens for beginning photographers. I have had friends ask me to take their kids' and family pictures using this lens. It's THAT good!

    Excellent newbie lens

I purchased this to round out the holy trinity of n00b lenses (18-55, 55-250 and the 50 1.8) I've heard that this lens is one of those must have lenses for n00bs and I can see why. While this lens does have its limitations (it's inexpensive for a reason) it does a very good job at getting clear images and works great as a secondary lens for the newbies. As far as build quality, yes it does feel cheap and poorly made but it's a great lens to have nonetheless. If you're the type that's abusive to your equipment then this will most likely break on your eventually. Fortunately, it's cheap so you can always get a replacement pretty easily. For the price, it's one of the best lenses to have if you're a newbie to DSLR's and I'm pretty happy with this purchase.

    Classic Portrait Lens

Great lens for many different situations. My only problem with the lens is that it is an f/1.8, so when in low light situations you might not get the best picture that your camera can provide. If you have the money to spend, I would suggest the f/1.2.

Can't beat it for the price

For the price, you can't beat it. Great image quality. I only have two complaints. First is it's plastic, so I have concerns about durability. Not too much of an issue for me as I keep all my lenses in a padded hard plastic Pelican case. But if you use a regular soft camera bag, this may be an issue. My second complaint is that the auto-focus is a little slow. Not terrible, but it is noticeably slower than my other lenses. But overall, it's a great lens for the price.

Good replacement for a kit lens! I use as my primary everyday lens as well as for portraits and concert photography. F/1.8 eats darkness pretty good and it's cheap so if I get thrashed in a mosh pit and drop it I can just buy another. Camera's insured, most of my lenses are not. It's plastic and feels kind of cheap in your hands, but it's served me well in regular use with zero problems. This is an excellent buy and if you have the 100 bucks there is no reason this lens shouldn't be in your bag right now.

I've been using this lens with a canon t2i and it has exceeded my expectations. So much better than the stock lens the camera comes with.
