Customers are impressed with the EF 50mm f/1.8 II Standard Lens's image quality, ease of use, and ability to produce excellent photos in low light. Many appreciate its wide aperture, which creates a pleasing background blur, making it ideal for portraits. The lens is also praised for its affordability and lightweight design. I bought this for a friend as a gift for house/dog sitting for my wife and I. I've been trying to help her with her photography and figured this would be a nice step up for her from her kit lens. We opened the lens together and I immediately noticed the cheap plastic feel. The Nikon counterpart is plastic as well, but it's a tougher, thicker plastic. I also noticed that this is not an internal focusing system. The inside barrel that moves the glass for focusing protrudes out beyond the end of the outer shell of the lens. Not a big deal but this inside barrel is even flimsier plastic than the outside. Personally I'd feel like I'd break this lens by just looking at it wrong. As for actual performance, I haven't gotten to see many photos taken with this lens, but from what I have, this guy performs admirably for the price. I'd still recommend this lens to somebody that's just getting in to photography and wants to take a jump up in lens quality. It's a prime, so it doesn't zoom, but don't let that scare you. This lens can still be versatile for you. I have the Nikon counterpart and love walking around with my 50mm to capture shots throughout my day. I even had a recent trip to NYC and used the 50mm almost exclusively while walking around doing street photography.

We love this lens. Great for portraits. We have a Cannon Rebel EOS3 and we had to make some adjustments to the manual settings to allow the lens to really work its magic, but once the adjustments were made, we were capturing pictures filled with light and detail. Excellent Starter Lens

i am a member of a local camera club and was wondering how people get this types of shots to bring only the main subject into focus. It does a nice job. It is light weight and easy to change and works well with my Canon Rebel camera

If you are considering buying this Lens, chances are you are new to prime lenses. There is no zoom, you need to walk around to fit everything in frame. However, prime lenses are age-old lenses and with simplicity comes great quality of the glass. The fast aperture makes it great for portraits and low light photography. There is little vignetting and bokeh quality is good too. The Auto-Focus is moderately fast, but with my T3i it struggles to find the right spot at low lights. When the light is adequate it is snappy, though a little noisy. This one is all plastic, so you need handle this carefully. Do not drop this baby. Also, it is better not to rotate the focus ring while in AF mode. In summary if you want great portraits but on a low budget then go ahead and pick it up. You won't regret.

I purchased this lens as an add on to my DSLR. It was a great purchase and I'm very happy with the photos it takes. If you want to do close ups or wider angles, having a lens with zoom is a better option (this is a fixed lens, so in order to "zoom" in or out, you just move yourself), or you should have one in addition to this one. However, for portraits or still lifes, this is a great lens. It is the cheapest of the options out there, but there is not enough significant difference for me to spend more money.

This lens is perfect. The price is great, yes it's light weight but why is that a bad thing? The f stop range is perfect. I cant complain about any pictures I've taken with this lens.

This lens is a MUST BUY if you want great quality for an amazing price, I mean, it's super sharp and I think it is the cheapest canon lens. The only negative is that it's made of plastic, so it can get stuck in your camera.

    Lightweight simple lense

This is a lightweight simple, relatively cheaply assembled lense with moderate image quality. Fully plastic in its mount, and relatively quick to focus, but it is no ultrasonic motor lense. For a simple, relatively inexpensive, relatively fast lense that is not expected to last a lifetime, this can be a good choice.

This is a great lens if you are shooting video at night. The low f/stop gives you clear and crisp images without sacrificing shallow depth of field..

I bought this lens a few years ago, this current purchase was a replacement due to a mishap with a bottle of sun screen. Its a great prime lens for the price. Perfect option for anybody on a budget.
