Customers are saying

Customers love the EF50mm F1.4 USM Standard Lens for its exceptional image quality and beautiful bokeh. Many appreciate its strong low-light performance and ease of use, finding it well-suited for portraits and offering good value for the price. A minor drawback mentioned by some users is the audible noise during autofocus.

    Great Prime lens

This lens is a great fixed (or Prime) focal length lens. It has a huge aperture that can let on an enormous amount of light, and also allows for very smooth depth of field blur (or bokeh). It is suited mostly for more artistic shots and portraits or when low light without flash is required. The fixed length means that you have to move the camera to compose the shot, or crop the image in post, however the trade off is the huge aperture (F/1.4) and the great image quality you get from a prime lens. I would also suggest a hood when shooting outdoors or near bright light sources - I have picked up some lens flare from the sun even when it is not in the frame. It will also sometimes have trouble getting a focus lock if the aperture is set closer to wide open and the subject is moving due to the narrow depth of field and the subject shifting out of focus. Overall I would recommend this lens, especially if you want the artistic depth of field effect and particularly for portrait and natural light work.

I have shot 5 other "fast" 50mm lenses from 3 manufacturers. This is by far the worst iteration of a 50mm f/1.4 lens that I have ever used. The lens is way to soft wide open - at least twice as soft as the Canon f/1.8 which is far less expensive. This lens also back focuses when shooting subjects further away, and front focuses when shooting subjects close up. Micro adjustments will not help. All of my photos looked like I smeared vasoline or crisco on the front element. Otherwise, the lens is built fairly well and focuses at a decent speed. I returned this lens. I guess I'll wait until Canon releases a refresh of the 1.4 like they did for the 1.8....
