This is the first lens you should buy after your kit lens. It will be able to give you that special “look” that you can’t get from your phone or the kit lens. Bokeh or the blurry background effect is what I’m talking about. This lens is awesome, quiet, fast, and creates a great image. Do not buy one of those expensive af lenses until you buy this one and master it. Zoom is overrated and it’s a gimmick to sell you something you’ll never use. You will however take portraits of people with this lens. Get it. Enjoy it. Laugh at the “Johnson’s” for spending thousands on an “L” lens that you take better pictures than with this lens.

I pop this on my 5D when I go on wee walks around the neighbourhood. It's tiny, fast, light, and great for capturing random moments in a variety of conditions. Sure, it's not a nature photographer's first choice but it's so light which makes hiking around the hills easy. There are a lot of reviews out there written by people way more qualified than I am, but from this amateur's perspective, you can't beat this lens at the price. Yeah, it's made of plastic and feels cheap, but that is not reflected in the lens performance.

Canon's 50mm EF 1.8 offers excellent DOF and is an all-around great lens for the artist in each of us. Versatile with video and still captures. One of my favorite lenses for my 5D Mark III!

I absolutely love this lens. Its my go to lens for portrait photography and it barely leaves my camera (canon rebel). The quality is awesome for the price. This is a must have if you have a canon rebel and enjoy portrait photography.

I bought a DSLR to start taking portraits of my family. This lense is perfect. I am inexperienced and my portraits are fantastic. Love the blurred background.

Have been interested in getting a 50mm lens for some time I was told the f 1.4 is the ultimate lens but is also more than double in price. For someone who is a beginner at photography but wants to branch out to get those gorgeous bokeh photos THIS is the LENS! I was so extremely happy with the first few photos I took with this lens, it really gives you the more professional feel in the photo. It is now my favorite lens. I never take it off my camera. For the price and the quality I would definitely tell someone to invest in this lens!

There is a lens for every occasion -- this one provides a great clear and crisp look to your photos with aperature priority ... background blurring and focal points!

Known by pro as the nifty 50 and the plastic fantastic, this is widely revered as the first lens to buy after you get your DSLR. I have the Canon SL1 (100D), which is a crop sensor...which magnifies the lens to about 85mm equivalent. Perfect for getting in close. The 1.8 aperture is perfect for bokeh. There really is nothing negative I can say about this one. 10/10
