Cheap lens. Noisy. You get what you pay for on this one. Just a basic lens no magic here. Great value for someone learning how to take pictures.

    Great Lens

I bought this lens a few years back. It was the first lens I'd purchased besides the kit lens, and I bought mainly because I'd read so many great reviews. One thing to note is that it is not as sturdy as the more expensive lenses. The first one I owned broke, but I replaced it. It's possible to achieve a very shallow depth of field with the 1.8 and it's great for bokeh effects (Seriously, get a bokeh effects kit. It's COOL!). But unfortunately the color quality could be better, but for $125 it's honestly a great deal. Especially when you consider how expensive lenses can be. If you're a beginner and/or you just want something fun without a hefty price tag, then this is for you!

    Much needed update.

The old 50mm 1.8 ii lens has been around for 25 years. It had suburb optics and a terrible focusing drive. This new Lens has the same optics. But, has a much more sturdy build, an excellent STM drive, and a 7 leaf circular aperture. This is a huge update. Everyone needs it in their kit. FYI... it has 49mm filter threads. I just picked up a 49mm to 52mm step-up adapter. It works fine. Now I don't have to get another set of filters in a less common thread size.

This lens is great. My family and I were planning our vacation and I wanted a light weight lens, Something that would be good for snapshots. Something quick and easy to use. I bought it for its price and so I had something easier to walk around with. I could not be happier with this investment. The picture quality, light weight, handling in low light situations...I am absolutely blown away!!! Thank you, Canon!!!

    BEST SECOND LENS TO BUY!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought my 70D in a bundle so it already came with the 15-85mm and the 75-300mm, so I don't consider those lenses I bought. I did some research before buying my second lens. Everything I looked at pointed me towards this lens for a second lens and I'm so glad I listened. The f-stop going all the way down to 1.8 is great for focusing on a single subject and blurring out the background to the point where you can't even tell what it is. I am a paid photographer and I use this lens in lots of my portrait shoots. To my clients it looks very underwhelming, but then they don't question the lens once they see how the photographs turned out. I would like to say I'm an advanced photographer and even I use this lens. This lens is in no way only for beginners. This lens has some uniqueness to it that can not be replicated by any other lens. It is a must have in any photographer, or non-photographer's, gear bag.
