Seems Great If You Don't Need (Limited) 4K Video
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I decided to look into replacing my 8 year old Canon G12, as I banged it up a bit, the lens closing had acted up but it then cured itself. And I was looking forward to upgrading a bit and having a tele lens option. I looked seriously at the Sony A6000 (my daughter likes hers) and A6300, but I was somewhat concerned with the % of people who had an issue with at least one of their lenses making reliable connection when in place. I was hoping to obtain a well rated mirror-less 2 lens kit for about $1000, which is asking a lot. When I looked over the Canon offerings, I had to get past the confusion of their numbering system. I considered the M6 (virtually the well rated M5 w/o a viewfinder). Then I sorted out that the M50, which just came out in 4/18, also had some great similar qualities (APS-C sensor), dual pixel focusing, and upgrades such as more focus points and newer Digic8 processing. The 4K video has numerous compromises, per many reviews, but I have no need for that level. I did pay attention to the more standard video settings having decent auto-focusing, which my G12 did not and was a sore point. I read many online reviews and felt I knew what I was getting. Canon does not get the kudos on mirror-less of some other brands, but it does get good marks for image quality and the various features. The key competitive negatives seemed to be the 4K video and the lower battery life / number of shots (not the same as the M6/M5, but still more than I use in a day). And the M50 has one main dial instead of two on many other cameras. Do check out the various online reviews for better understanding I was looking in early May and the price for the 2-lens kit (w/15-45 and 55-200mm) was at the initial list price of $900 camera w/15-45 plus $350 2nd lens, more than I preferred to spend. Those lenses are 24-72mm and 88-320m as 35mm camera equivalents. Some googling noted that Canon typically drops the price after some 6 months, but here they did it in 1 month, so the camera (next day) was lowered to $700 and the (typically $349) 2nd lens adds only $230, so the kit was $929. That got me headed to a nearby BB, which had the 2-lens kit. (That store did not even have it on display yet). I am quite happy with my initial experience. The paper manual is very compact so I recommend the downloadable pdf version. I do not think the single main dial (instead of two) will bother me. Many of the features are much like my G2; i.e., full Automatic, Program (to adjust flash for example), Time or Aperture priority, etc. I am having to figure out some key (for me) items such as where to get to the close-up setting, how to set up occasional auto exposure bracketing, how to vary flash output, etc. The small flash is good to around 15', so I was pleased that my older compact Canon hot-shoe 270EX flash is compatible. Again, the 4K video is not generally rated for prime time due to its compromises. But if that does not matter to you either, this camera seems a good candidate vs the M5 in the Canon family, especially if upgrading from a non-DSLR Canon. While Canon did not get great marks on their slower push into mirrorless, I think this camera is a good quality / value proposition, especially if you (like me) might choose to rule out the Sony's. While you will find others with great ratings in the "top 10" lists, some of those are also quite a few $ more. I think the current $929 2-lens kit is very reasonable and I hope to have my initial impressions pan out longer term. I did puchase a pair of non-Canon supplemental batteries, some B&W UV haze/protective filters, and some nice elastic lens cap retainers. On those, I recommend the kind where the cord loops through holes in the cap (vs. the stick-on kind).

excellent camera if you know its limitations
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I truly love this camera. I did my research and considered a sony, panasonic, and this canon. I was upgrading from a canon t6, but did not mind the thought of a new ecosystem since I only had 3 lenses. In the end, this one me over. The phase detect AF is super quick as well as the burst picture speed. Picture quality is amazing with both of these lenses. I also got the mount adapter and my 50mm 1.8 also looks beautiful. The vari-angle screen, EVF, timelapse options, even the video is amazing (in 1080). I knew about the 4k limitations up front and wasn't concerned with them. The video quality from this camera with the right lenses in 1080p is amazing. I don't need 4k right now. If you do want 4k video, I'd say you really need to be looking at something else, but if that isn't a need for you right now, this is an amazing lightweight camera system. I consider it a steal for the price and the top of the line canon mirrorless currently. It may be missing a dial from the M5 or M6, but you can easily adjust almost anything on the touchscreen which makes up for it in my book. I couldn't be happier with my decision to purchase this camera. One other thing I would say, be cautious if you plan to use the adapter and ef or ef-s lenses. They add a lot of weight and make it very forward heavy. If that's not an issue for you, then go for it. The 50mm I tried gave me really nice shots compared to my T6.

Can"t go wrong
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Just received this camera today in the mail took less than 30 minutes before I was shooting photos. The grip on the camera is awesome and fits my big hands great. Coming from a DSLR to this Mirrorless was smooth and easy I highly recommend this camera for any amateur looking to get into photography. The size is awesome not too big like my DSLR was it almost looks like a point and shoot. I purchased a warranty direct from Canon and a few more lenses from their refurbished store which saved me a few hundred dollars. If you looking for more than a point and shoot this is the camera for you! I recommend getting extra batteries and a case to protect your investment.

Beginner Point & Shoot Upgrade
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This camera is good for someone who is just beginning to get into photography, but it did not feel right in my hands because it is so light, and I’m happier with my DSLR after the exchange.
