A great concept that almost gets it right

Cloverfield is something that we've really lacked in the last several years: an American monster movie. Some would argue that Roland Emmerich's Godzilla remake counts, but it was still attached to a Japanese tradition. J.J. Abrams's concept, about a giant monster attcking during a goodbye party being held for the departure of one of the main characters really hits home, both in its imagery (an instantly famous shot of the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty hitting a New York City street comes to mind) and its unavoidable commentary on post 9/11 hysteria. The ensuing panic and destruction is both technologically dazzling and fascinating to watch. The film follows a group of partiers who go to look for one's girlfriend after they get into a fight at his going-away party. Abrams originally pitched the movie as something like Godzilla meets a Cameron Crowe movie, and the first 2o minutes or so of the movie really reflect that. This sets up the reason for which the entire film is shot in handheld: it turns out that the footage we see is government evidence for a project code-named "Cloverfield". At the party, one of the guys is assigned to film goodbyes from all of the partygoers for the main character, and in the chaos that ensues, he decides to keep filming the attack. Some may lose interest during the beginning of the film because there is no monster; indeed, a definite "Jurassic Park" effect is present, because nothing is seen for about 25 minutes. Still, if you hang in there, it's a good ride. Overall, Cloverfield isn't an amazing film, but it's got style and originality. Nonetheless, the shaking camera really gets on your nerves toward the end, especially when the monster is in play, but luckily it is a short enough film that you won't lose interest. It might be interesting to see an alternate take on the event where it is shot normally, but that rather defeats the point. That's like saying "Memento" would be better if it went forward. I recommend this to anyone, since it really is good entertainment. Just bear in mind that you will be getting a drama more so than an action movie.

    A frightening, exciting horrorfest

After a strange and wildly popular viral marketing campaign, Cloverfield came out to rave reviews all over. And for good reason. This is a truly exciting, frightening, and at times, disturbing American monster movie that really touches on a lot of emotions. It's well into the movie before you get a clear shot of the monster, and even then, it's a terrifying, huge, menacing beast. As opposed to most monster movies, we're seeing this from the simple person's perspective, much like the 2005 adaptation of War of the Worlds: we have no knowledge of anything that's going on, and only few scarce details gained throughout the movie light our way. A very welcome change. However, a little bit of backstory may have helped understand the monster a bit more. The movie takes the whole "leave the viewer in the dark" concept a little too far by telling you pretty much nothing. Also, the characters are a little too cookie-cutter for my taste, with some questionable dialogue ("You're like, my main dude!" seriously, that's a line). But overall, this is a great monster movie for a new generation. If you're a fan of action flicks, this is one you shouldn't miss.

This is a cool movie for people that like monster movies without much plot. In a nutshell--a going-away party gets interupted by a giant monster's attack on New York City. The ENTIRE film is shot from the point of view of one of the partygoers as they try to get across town to help a friend. Beware-the camerawork can be sickening sometimes--if you had a hard time with the Blair Witch Project or people's home movies you'll have a hard time with this. Also, there are only a couple of shots of the monster. Most of this movie they are actively trying to avoid the monster, so that affects how much it's on screen. There's not a lot to the acting, but then again, all they really have to do is scream a lot and run. The first 20 minutes or so are used to establish who the characters are, then the last hour is all running and screaming and such. It' s an enjoyable and different take on the Godzilla style movies but it's not for everyone.

why is this movie only like an hour and twenty something minutes, other than that is was great. the home video effect to the movie worked good. and special effects are amazing for this type of filming and it looks like your actually there cuz its on blu-ray. a lot of critics call movies heartpounding or breath taking. well this movie is actually both of those because its so realistic. the unknown actors are actually pretty good including Hudd the camera guy. but i couldve seen this movie having a lot of different ending even thought 2 different endings to it already. i hope the sequel is the same thing but from someone elses point of view in new york. its cool how previous recordings are seen when hudd is filming, too. the special feature are ok because nothing really tells you more than what you already know, but the bloopers are funny.

First of all, I want to tip my hat to the director for the layout of the movie. I was truly pulled into the story line. The thing that I wanted most was a good look at the monster. This movie did what it was supposed to do. It gave me bits and bits of views of the monster throughout the movie, and basically just teased me with small views. It seemed as if the further the movie progressed, the more clear the image of the monster became. Of all the aspects of this movie, my only complaint was the ending, but thats not enough to keep me from watching it again. Just a tip, I highly recommend some motion sickness medicine for anyone who gets "car-sick" before they watch this film.

    LOVE THIS!!

I absolutely LOVED this movie.. the average movie watcher may not though because this is no average movie. Don't expect what you normally see, this film is far from the norm. That is what makes it so exciting. Blair Witch was so popular because it seemed so real, the cameras were handheld and this film uses the same concept, only done much much better. The glimpses you get of everything around you are what the CHARACTERS see, not what the movie goer usually sees and knows to shout at the screen "not that way!" lol. This time you don't know anything that they don't know. This movie is original in so many ways. Original begining, original plot, original filming, original theory behind what is happening, and original ending too. You will not be let down if that is the type of Film you want to see!! Most movies let you guess the way they will go and the way it will turn out.. this one.. I dare you to try!! I LOVE it. The suspense is crazy!! I don't get scared easy at all NOT at all and I actually jumped at one scene there LOL. I'd say rent it and see if you can resist buying it. I bet not! Hold on for the RIIIIIIIIDE.

At first the idea of watching the movie through a camcorder was a little annoying. The camera moved around a lot - I mean a lot! I about ready to say forget about it until the monster arrived in NYC. Turn your sound sound up and don't turn it down! You can feel the monster coming closer and closer. The camcorder made it feel like you were in the movie. If my surround sound was down, I wouldn't of enjoyed this movie! It really kept my interest in the movie. At the end of the movie - you wanted more! Hopefully there will be a sequel. After it was over - I took a deep breathe!

This movie kinda leaves you in the dark as to what it's actually about. I took a chance on it and wasn't disappointed. The monster in Cloverfield would kick Godzilla's butt! Although the camera is shaky at times and don't get me wrong that it kinda ads to the effect of the movie i just get annoyed at times. Then there are parts where its kinda dark and you can't make out the scence but thankfully it quickly improves. If you are looking for something different in the Sci-Fi / Horror genre, you need to check this one out!

    Beasts each an apocalypse!!!!

My spiritual take on it: It was FOUR BEAST MONSTERS ACTUALLY. Symbolizing the first beast (took the statue top off), another beast (which those lil ones fell down off of in the city), the beast (in the bridge scene part), and a beast (in the appear silent out of thin air scene). Noteable in Apoc 13 (which even equal 4) right by simple words a, first, another, & the; concerning even the four beasts in other book with beasts. A beast which got the cam guy symbolizes a dynamical beast which be a EVEN HIDDEN PORTAL which very well can DO ANY THING AND MAKE ANY ENTRANCE to spoil the devil which is not Say Tan nor Geez Us nor Mabus, but a co-yellow. The co-yellow devil is symbolized by those people running. Plus, check Apoc 12 to match. Actually noteable be us which be each a four-set beast with main tops the firstfruits. Any which know, knows what befalls even so obvious how IT prefers. Buy the DVD of this movie since it is much more than meets the eye!!!!

Every once in a while, a movie comes along that changes how movies are made. Of course, this isn't the first movie to be shot in the Cinéma Vérité style.. but in my opinion - one of the best. After all the hype and advertising around it, I had extremely high expectations for this movie - and all were met - then surpassed. You can't help but love the characters, and feel terrified for them at the same time. Plus, there are plenty of little easter eggs in the movie, if you're paying attention. LOVE IT.

This is a fun movie to watch but getting past the first 15 minutes is key. The "camcorder" camera work takes some adjusting but ultimately works in the end. This movie pulls you into the experience like no other. The Blair Witch Project used a similar technique but this is executed much better and the story is much more interesting and characters more likable. Keep a close eye out in the last scene of the movie, watch it in slow motion if you need to and you’ll know where the monster came from.

This movie was pretty good if you can ignore some of the unrealistic parts like the Statue of Liberty's head being too small, or the characters running around after receiving injuries that would obviously kill them. Besides that, it was a good movie. It wasn't a typical action/monster movie and I like that. The marketing for this movie was brilliant, and it leaves a lot of questions, which is great because our society thrives on rumors and speculation.

Cloverfield takes off on the concept of "you are there" filming that we have seen with "The Blair Witch Project". It works, I actually feel the anxiety and intense confusion as the characters scramble to anywhere, trying to flee from whatever. The pods, eggs, or whatever they are, speed out of the night sky to hit Manhattan, taking down high rises and the Statue of Liberty. I question the actual scale of the Statue of Liberty's head, this head looks rather small when it careens into a Manhattan street. Where are the monsters? Why are they here? You do not see a monster/space alien until you get a glimpse of one while it peruses through skyscrapers. The scene depicting a woman "blowing up" behind a curtain at a triage makes no sense, again, show a monster!! The best and spookiest part of this film is the scene where "little monsters" or things with wings are infiltrating the subway and tunnels, chasing the confused and shocked characters to madness. The ending to this film is very, very, scary. It actually saves the film, showing guess what..... an extremely large monster! The alternative endings are not that different from each other at all. Yes, "Cloverfield" is worth the buy, it is a scary nightmare I would not want to encounter at all. This film should scare you in some way or form.

If you do get sick with shaky cameras this movie is not for you. For me it was not really a problem. It was a little slow in the beginning but as soon as the first explosion happens your on the edge of your seat. The story was great and i found myself turing in my seat trying to see what is going on(thinking if i turn the camera will move back towards the action). The first person view will pull you into the movie wanting to see every little detail. Don't listen to those critics that always bash movies like; no character development, no story, bla bla bla. If you want to see this movie but aren't sure if you really want it then go and rent it first. You shouldn't be disappointed in my view If you do buy the movie make sure you get Hud's Video Diary with the movie(its pretty funny). Hope you enjoy the movie!

Would give it 4.5 out of 5 and i am a fairly critical person. I would agree when they claim it is our modern day Godzilla. Today the original Godzilla seems very corny, but for what it was, what technology they had it was very good. One of the most debated aspects of this film was the fact that many scenes are shaky. This is one of the aspects that make it a great suspenseful film. J.J Abrams purposely shot it this way. As art patrons of films, (yes films are a form of art, or at least should be) we need to hold an open mind. Although this film is not completely original, the artist should strive for originality, and J.J did. Watch this film with an open mind, purchase it, and discuss this film intelligently... like how the monsters in the film remind you of the monsters in resistance!

I've heard lots of bad reviews for this movie. I gave it a chance though because I've found that a movie someone else didn't like, doesn't necessarily mean that I won't like it. If you watch this movie with an open mind and not be initially judgemental, I think you'll find it's a good movie too. Yeah it took a little too long maybe to get to the meat or heart of the movie but it wasn't that boring to me. The only problem I had of the movie was the character of Hud. He was pretty annoying and lame especially when shooting the party testimonials. I've heard that they didn't show enough of the monster but I kinda like how they did it. In fact I saw quite a bit of the monster so I don't know where they got that. Just give this movie a chance, I really enjoyed it.

    Outstanding Film

A fantastic allegory about 9/11 that also works on a surface level as a great monster film. Shot on a low budget of 25m it looks better than most blockbusters that cost many times that much. It is shot with the camera work reminiscent of the tv show The Office, so if that kind of verite style bothers you, it might not be for you. But I personally loved it. I've found that many of the detractors got too caught up in the media hype for it and didn't judge it on its own merits. One of the many creative things about this film that I like is that you basically are told (warned) what happened to the characters in the very beginning. The joy of the film is the journey not any final twist or surprise ending.

Overall Cloverfeild brings a new asepect to the horror genera. I know that we have all seen or heard of Alien and/or Predetor, but Cloverfeild puts you in a competely diffrent realm. This horror is constuced through the sepense and effect captured and brings to life. Though the acting can get caught up, don't let it distract you because this movie is based on REAL life from a home camera perspective, this makes the actng a little chessey beacuse in REAL life no one would acutually run towrad the moster than away from it. One of the best action/drama films of 2007, a 5 out of 5 is completlydeserved.

Cloverfield resurrected the monster movie sub-genre, with a gritty realistic feel that adds something new to genre thats been pretty much dead since the american take on Godzilla back in the 90s. the movie is an intense, fast pace rollercoaster ride that is definitely worth your time,
