Customers are saying

Customers are pleased with the RMx Series 850W power supply's ample power, modular design, and quiet operation. Many appreciate the high-quality components and easy installation. While some users reported an audible coil whine, the majority found the unit to run cool and efficiently. The positive feedback on quality and ease of use outweighs the relatively few negative comments.

On 1/11/2021 I purchased the Rm850X psu. I bought a new video card and needed more power for my system. I plugged everything in just the same as my old psu. I had 2 hard drives and the power for my case's oem rgb lights on a sata power leg. When I powered on my computer, everything briefly powered. There was a small pop, everything shut off and I could smell something burnt. I reinstalled my old psu and the computer turned on. I thought everything was ok until I noticed that my case rgb lights did not turn on and the computer did not read the 2 hard drives that's were hooked up to the same sata power leg. The hard drives do not work at all just like the rgb lights. Upon closer inspection I found that both hard drives are burnt smelling as well as the controller for my rgb lights. This psu fried 2 hard drives and the built in lights on my computer case. On 1/12/2021 I returned the product to Best Buy and was told that they could not do anything for me. I sent an email to corsair explaining what had happened. But since I returned the psu to where I purchased it, corsair wouldn't help either because they couldn't inspect the psu. This $150 psu cost me a $300 computer case and 2 hard drives. One of which had pictures of my kids from the last 18 years. So $500 worth of damage and corsair doesn't want to help. You can't hook up a psu wrong!! My old one works just fine and the evga I bought after this fiasco works just fine. Hooked up the exact same way. If you still buy this be sure to back up your hard drives. And also google problems with this power source. I found others with components that got fried, including mother boards. And also others that the psu its self popped and started smoking. As much as this sucks I definitely got lucky. It could have cost me more. It took so long to write a review because I had to wait a week for corsair to tell me they weren't going to help me out. And I wanted to give them a chance to make it right before I left such a poor review. As soon as I recoup from having to replace the parts damaged from this psu, I will be replacing my corsair vengeance ram. Good luck to those who still decide to purchase this psu

The power cables for the GPU it comes with are stupid. It includes 2 power cables but they both have splitters. Basically required to buy new cables or have ugly splitters with the 30 series cards. Otherwise fine.

Purchased this 2.5 years ago and so far has been running great, and as advertised. No coil whine (have had issues with this on other Corsair PSUs), and fan is excellent (silent until a fair amount of load and even then it's inaudible). Nothing bad to say about it yet in the few years I've had it!

Product is working well but out of the box it looked damaged, few parts looked bent. The box was not in perfect condition but it was the last one. I guess it’s my fault I probably should have taken it back.

It's been 1 mouth and the fan is already starting to make a loud noise. It seems to work ok but i had some problems with my undervolted CPU that i had setup on my old 600watt PSU without any problems. I can't put my finger on it but things just feel off with this and now that the fan is messing up i think i got a bad one. If it wasn't such a pain in the butt to return i would but at best my pc is on and running and i have yet to have anything really bad happen. I can't say i would recommend this to anyone and i don't think I'll go Corsair for my power supply again.

    Coil whine/buzzing and inflexible cables

Purchased this to replace an old EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 that had issues with a squeaky fan when under load. The RMx unit I received doesn't seem to have the same issue. However, it has an issue of its own. The unit emits a faint buzzing noise, even when under light load, like browsing the internet, or submitting this review. The other hit against the RMx is its cables. They're incredibly inflexible where the heatshrink begins and ends. This is due to the inline capacitors. I'll likely try to get a replacement for my unit.

Died within a week of purchase. Maybe I got a bad unit, but I wouldn’t want to buy another to find out. When it did work, it worked just as intended, albeit making a loud cracking noise when powering off (which is normal from what I was told). Something else noteworthy is that the cables are somewhat bulky and don’t bend very well, which isn’t ideal if you want a somewhat clean looking build. I’d say to go with EVGA, they’re more reliable from my experience.

Watch out for faulty power supplies

I give this two stars mainly because the original one I bought was faulty and fried my motherboard on my new computer build. Best Buy replaced my power supply for free (after I paid $200 for total tech support to diagnose the problem). Unfortunately, I bought my motherboard on Amazon, so they didn’t replace that for me. I got the same brand power supply for a replacement and it works fine. I’m just not impressed that they didn’t catch the faulty power supply I bought originally.

Thought I got lucky when I found one in stock, but upon installation there was considerable coil whine. The PSU would even buzz when my PC was turned off. Didn't have this issue before with my older PSU. Based on all the positive reviews, I guess I was just unlucky. Not sure if I should try Corsair again or go with Seasonic.

    Poor Product

I bought this online for my new PC setup and I was very excited for it to come. The PSU looked amazing and had a bag full of all the cables but when it came, the SATA, CPU, and GPU cables were completely wrong. The had the correct beginnings but the wrong ends. How is it possible that I order something brand new and they provide me with incorrect cables. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize it until after I plugged in these cables and mind you I had to force the cables in. Everything was plugged in so I turned on my PC, and then I heard a pop and then smoke appeared. The poorly made PSU fried my system. I honestly couldn’t believe it. This was a huge inconvenience, waste of money and poor job done. I hope whoever buys this makes sure the cables are correct or else the psu will fry something in your system. With that being said, I returned the product and exchanged it for a different brand and looked over every cable EVEN THOUGH I SHOULDN’T HAVE TO. Thanks for a horrible product.

      Hi Megan,

The cables should not require excess force to connect them. They are designed to only connect to the proper ports, if they are not correct, we do not recommend using them and you would want to reach out to our Support team: support.corsair.com

    After 6 Months, it's dead!

Purchased this one back in Sept, 2021 and died a few days ago, so only about 6 months worth of use. I am an IT certified technician, and been around computers for almost 25 years, and this is the first time I've ever had a PSU die on me. I am and always been a Seasonic user and never had a single one die on me during half of my career. I've troubleshooted the corsair psu with everything and my set up is just a X570 Asus Tuf with a 3800x and 3090 Evga (which is my side gaming rig). I've rma'ed the Corsair power supply, and took a while to get a response. Now, I am not sure if I will either get a new replacement or a refurbished one (which usually comes with a 1 year warranty). If Corsair decides to send me a refurbished unit, you can rest assure it's bye bye from me.
