Just follow the directions plug it up for a few hours before use. I haven't had an outage yet but I did test it by unplugging it and it ran everything well for a while.

||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had these battery back ups before, but this one I've had less than 3 months and it randomly sets off a screaming alarm and the light blinks. I have to turn it off, unplug things then reset and turn it back on before plugging things back in. First time, okay, maybe a fluke, but it has done it 3 or 4 times already, I think it's time to take it back, must be a dud, the others I have had lasted for years and didn't do that.

You can choose to have it in place all the time, to have your equipment safe and protected with an instant back up power in case of a power outage. Or have it charged and put away for those times when the light go out as long as you recharge it every 3 months you should be good to go. It is quite heavy though.
