Frustrating

Mine refused to stay connected to WiFi and required several resets. Eventually I gave up on it and used it as a regular switch for 5 months. About one month ago it finally had a new firmware update. Has worked much better since then, but I would avoid this switch unless your patient and willing to mess with it every so often.

Has potential
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really want to like this smart switch, but it needs a little refinement before I can use them for a whole house replacement. I started with a few Hue bulbs and I really liked those, but I quickly realized I wanted a smart switch, not a smart bulb. I want to be able to use my voice (Google Assistant), my phone (Google Home), or the physical wall switch - and I prefer the idea of using the pre-existing switch/wiring over the Hue wireless switch. So I was excited by the CES announcement of the C by GE line of smart switches and LED bulbs (coming soon?). Note to GE, I don't want to pay $50 for a smart switch and then pay $50 for a color LED bulb - find a way for the switch to control the colors/dimming without the need for a 'smart bulb'. I see that GE reads and responds, so hopefully they will see this as well. What I like: It was easy to install. It wasn't my first time installing electrical, but (almost) anyone who can use a screw driver and watch a YouTube video and read the directions should be able to do it. It works. Set up was easy. As long as you realize you need the GE app you shouldn't have any issues. Adding to Google Home was easy. I've read that others had issues, but my install was trouble-free. What I don't like: Dimming is clunky. Using the wall switch it dims/brightens in steps. Personally, I find this unacceptable. I want smooth transitions when changing lighting levels. It doesn't remember the last dimming level. The one switch I installed in the baby's room, and I want it to turn on at the lowest level when I press the 'on' button from the wall switch. I don't want the light at full brightness when I check in the baby or, really ever when the baby is in the room. I'm currently writing this on my phone because I'm bored due to a cable outage (internet and TV). So, my Wi-Fi is down, but the switch isn't showing the red ring, as it should - I check that the setting is enabled in the app. It comes with a wall plate. Maybe my house is an anomaly, but almost every switch in my house is either two it three switches. So I need to buy a wall cover anyway. And since I bought those, if I ever do replace a single switch I need to buy a matching single cover rather than use the included wall plate. But it's a 10 cent piece of plastic (for GE) and they can market it as a 10 dollar added value to the switch. For what's it's worth, I do recall it being a nice quality cover, but I haven't looked at since I installed the switch two months ago. The design - I'm fine with the astetics, it's not symmetrical, and I can love with that, or at least I've convinced myself I can. But, that's not my issue. Many switches are on the wall as you walk into a room, making it difficult to walk in, and reach to turn the switch on without stopping, turning your body, then pressing the button. I find that I rarely turn the light on with my first attempt to press the button. It's large enough, but it wants a solid push only in the direct center. A capasitive touch sensor would be nice, but that would add to the cost... The cost. $50 doesn't seem like a good value. Value is relative, I understand, and also it's priced competitive with their competitors, so it's not overpriced in the market, I just feel the smart switch market in general is overpriced. If I have 40 switches in my home, that $2000 to add whole home smart switches! That doesn't take into account the switches I want with motion sensors. Yikes. Hopefully GE will release their basic smart switches (on/off only) soon. But they need to look good next to a dimmer switch, not just a basic rocker or flip switch. I don't want to pay the full price of a dimmer switch just to disable the dimmer in the app. I want to control everything by voice, phone, switch, even the garbage disposal (I am always Leary about flipping that switch on with wet hands as I am doing the dishes - hey Google, turn on garbage disposal...) So, yeah, my dislike list is longer than my likes, but many can be (possibly) resolved with firmware updates. I did have one issue with Google being unable to communicate with the switch. I tried unlinking then relinking GE in Google Home, but that didn't work. I pulled the air gap switch, that cut power to the switch, and then pushed it back in, and that resolved the issue. I do like the concept, but I feel it's not yet what I need, especially for the significant investment it would require. If these things can be resolved (as well as issues I've read about the motion sensor switch - adding ability to set length of light on motion; setting brightness levels on motion - global settings, per switch settings, and based on time of day (the hall light, stairwell lights, only need to be a low dimmed setting at night, no one wants to walk by the sensor then get blinded by 100% power; there are other things I'd like to see in that product, but I'm not reviewing that one here. Overall, I like the product and I am hoping issues can be resolved before a competitor releases something that fits my needs.

We also want to note that our switch does remember the last dimming level. When you press the button on your switch, your lights will turn on at full brightness. However, when you press either the up or down dimming button, your lights will come on at the last dimming state.”
