It would send alerts if sound levels or motion was detected. the setup was difficult and I am an IT guy so if you are not tech savy you may have some issues, the phone app was decent the mic could be better. it would stream well enough to see a face or person walking. but you would need to be watching and taking pictures live if you wanted to catch someone and have proof later.

The DCS-5020L allows you the option of zero configuration setup if your network is utilizing one of our D-Link Cloud Routers, and if you are not then you may go through the Setup Wizard, which will guide you through the installation process all the way from connecting your hardware to configuring your camera once you have downloaded the Setup Wizard from http://www.mydlink.com/support. We understand your recommendation of not having to use a network cable when first setting up and configuring the camera and we have sent this information to our Product Management team for future consideration.
Please note that you can customize areas of the video to monitor for motion to keep watch over specific areas of interest, and you can also set volume thresholds to determine the sound level required to trigger a sound notification event trigger. In addition, with the D-ViewCam app, you can view multiple cameras at the same time, record video, and set up scheduled and triggered recordings. It took longer to download the software to run on my cellphone than to install the camera. Good viewing range. Works well in dim light. However, overall I expected better resolution.
