Google Home device was reconnected to WIFI

Google Home device stopped working and my efforts to connect it to WIFI was going nowhere. On-line service was able to resurrect the device which I was most pleased to salvage, having grown quite dependent on it for household time-savers and quick information.

Unbelievable How Poor The Service Is At Geek Squad

My Computer self Diagnostic indicated that my hard drive was failing. Dell customer support confirmed this online. My computer was out of warranty so I contacted Geek Squad via online chat. The online technician would not even discuss it once he heard it was a hard drive issue he told me to make an appointment with the Geek Squad. I made an appointment ad showed up on time. When I got to the desk, I was greeted by this young lady who was unable to assist me and indicated that I needed to reach out to Dell to get back up software. I asked to discuss this with a Technician, but was told that they would not be able to assist till I got the tools they needed. I asked why the online tech did not tell me this and the young lady indicated that the online technician was a separate service and indicated that they cause them problems at the store all the time. I brought the computer back home and we used the technician from my work who was able to Mirror the drive I had and get us back up and running for around $100! Guess who will not be used by this family for repairs, and Best Buy will not be a place we will shop unless we absolutely need to from now on!

First my computer was stuck in this endless loop where I could not complete bios update but needed that to complete regular updates. Took in the computer, they did the updates fine, but I ran into a Wifi connection problem once back home. Went back, but encountered the same problem later because I was choosing the wrong network connection (long story). The person helping me on the phone at that point (Michael C.) had the patience of a saint. I was tired and upset and nothing was working. This person just didn't give up. If one thing didn't work, he tried another and talked me through it with clear and helpful instruction until we found the mistake I was making. He didn't for a moment make me feel stupid. I learned a great deal about my router and computer set up today, and am so grateful I didn't have to go through the agony that is getting help from xfinity/comcast. I give this service 5 stars, and Michael C. ten stars.

Overall, I was satisfied with my data recovery service. After accidentally deleting a folder with important documents from my flash drive, they were able to restore everything I lost! However, upon opening a few of the documents, it said they needed to be repaired. I am wondering if that is something Geek Squad would be willing to do for me as a followup? Thank you again!

    Geek Squad Service

I have written several five-star reviews for Best Buy on their products, sales staff, and the Geeks. This will not be one of those reviews! When my six-year-old HP laptop was coming unhinged (literally) in January, I headed to the same store I had purchased that old HP, because I had a great experience last time with the selection and implementation of that machine and was expecting the same results. Unfortunately, that did not happen. The purchase process was very pleasant and once I told the sales staff what I was looking for (size, features, quality, price) we were able to narrow it down to an ASUS combo (laptop/tablet) for which I happily gave a five-star review to Best Buy. I am still very happy with this purchase. After the purchase, is where things began to unravel? I guess the Geeks should have asked more questions prior to the transfer of data from my old machine to my new one? Or, maybe there should have been a form to give me outlining what they do vs what they don’t do? For instance, when they said they were going to load all of my files from the old HP to the new ASUS, I did not know that meant that none of the operational software went with it? So, when I gleefully returned to BB to pick up my new loaded ASUS, I noticed right away that a lot of “stuff” was missing? Oh, my “files” were there, letters, pictures, spreadsheets, etc., but with no operational software (specifically, Microsoft Office) I couldn’t do anything with these files or even manage my email. “Oh, you wanted MS Office?” I was asked? Well, it was there before and I thought it was transferable. Either it wasn’t, or they couldn’t do it, so $200.00 later, I have them install MS Office. Now, my files will open, but my MS Outlook will not receive emails. This one item became a huge conundrum for the Geeks and a waste of my time as well as theirs? The first Agent worked for at least an hour before he admitted that he didn’t have an answer and could I leave my machine there. I complied and after three days of nothing done, I went back and got it so I could use my new PC, even if I wasn’t receiving emails. I took it back a second time, and again, same thing, the Agent poked and prodded, and blamed my provider (Bright house, now Spectrum) and couldn’t make it work suggesting I contact them next. I took it back a third time, and the third Agent actually did what I thought they should have done all along, he uninstalled the software and reinstalled the software, and BOOM, emails started flowing in! Fixed! Or, so we thought? One day later, the whole thing crashed and no more emails. I took my ASUS back again (fourth time) and another agent looked at it and admitted that MS Outlook was not very popular with the Geeks “there are better email management systems than this” and convinced me to leave my machine once more even though I was reticent since they hadn’t done anything to it the last time? Three days pass and I get a call, “We have fixed your PC and it’s ready to pick up!” Oh, those were the words I had wanted to hear and I ran out to BB to pick it up. They handed me my ASUS, and I said, let me see for myself that this is working. We booted up the machine and instead of my desktop, there were several “help” pages and logons to Microsoft where the last technician had left their troubleshooting. Oh and of course, no emails are working! I now have spent over twelve hours of my time going back and forth and waiting at the counter as five different agents took a crack at resolving my MS Outlook problem. I kept saying, “guys, this isn’t rocket science, it just email!?” Now, I am being told, they have done all they can with my ASUS and this MS problem and it is now my problem and I will need to take it up with MS and/or Bright house (my internet provider). I got to tell you, I was ready to just return my ASUS (which I now love) and ask for a full refund and go back to my busted, broke down, seven yo HP because alas, it was still working! Out of sheer desperation and nowhere else to turn, I took it to the IT person at my school where I work. Five minutes later and my email problem was fixed and it has been running smoothly ever since?! I asked her point blank, “how could she have fixed in five minutes what five BB geeks couldn’t do in five days?” her answer, “I guess they don’t know what they are doing?!” I guess I’ll keep my ASUS and let go of the “Geeks”?

Charged me $600 to copy my damaged data to a new hard drive. Nothing was recovered, and in fact my files were further damaged in this process. They have a strict no refunds policy, and are almost impossible to get in touch with. I've had to get my bank involved to get any kind of resolution. And since i know what they're going to reply: yes i was informed of the damage to my files. What i was not informed of is that these files would NOT be recovered or repaired in any way. They freely admitted to me AFTER the fact that they are not able to recover even moderately damaged files, so keep that in mind before you come here. Saddest excuse for a data recovery center ive ever been to, i really wish i'd read the reviews and done my research.

    Returned hardrive with no data

My laptop hardrive failed and I brought it in for data recovery. 300 dollars later I'm handed back my external hardrive and they haven't put any of my data from my laptop on the hardrive. What was on there was pornography and memes, data from someone else's computer. When I attempted to have them fix this, they said there was nothing they could do and refused to give me a refund. I don't think insulting anyone in this review is necessary as the lack of professionalism speaks volumes itself. For the record, in case anyone from Best Buy reads this, this was in a Knoxville location.

Had taken my laptop to get screen fixed they said that it would get fixed. After a while of no response went to store they said that it basically not fixable and they basically threw it away and that I had lost all my info in there because they had to erase it so no one can go in my files I think that pretty sad they do that without telling the customer first. Had so many pictures that I wish I could recover and other info from work.

External HD $1750 to try and repair it!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I took my external HD to Best Buy for data recovery. First I had to pay $50 upfront for diagnosis. I was told I would get that amount in credit for any repairs. The HD was shipped off to the recovery center. Now I am being told it is a Level 3 recovery and will cost me $1750 upfront plus the cost of another HD to put the data on if the repair works. If the recovery doesn't work, I'm still out $200. No mention was made of the $50 credit to the recovery I already paid. The level 3 data recovery service is listed as $1450 on the Best Buy site, so where is the additional $300 charge coming from? If I choose to decline the results of a partial recovery, I would still need to pay $1300 non-refundable. I thought you only had to pay for recovery services if they are successful. With the Geek Squad, I would be paying whether the recovery is successful or not and paying more than advertised.

Hi James. Thanks for reaching out about this! I'm sorry to hear about the misunderstandings. To further clarify, the $50 would go towards the final amount if you go through with it. If you don't, it would be lost. As far as the price for the level three data recovery, the price can be in the range of $1450-$3000 depending on how difficult the recovery is. I hope this helps out a little. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Otherwise, I hope the data recovery is successful!

Took forever with little to no communication!!

I had a laptop sent in for data recovery on 8/11. After the work was done, I was sent a text message and an email to call them for further discussion in early September. I tried calling, emailing, texting, and it took three solid weeks of trying to actually get someone on the phone. Each time I called, after sitting on the phone in the queue, it would kick me over to a full voicemail box and I never actually talked to anyone for three weeks! During that time, I received emails stating I would receive a call and never did. Texts would be “misunderstood” since it was simply a canned text message. When I finally got a live person on the phone, I was told they would “expedite my process” for my troubles instead of any monetary compensation. I understand being backed up due to COVID, but I was told the entire process would take no longer than 30 days - my device was sent on 8/11, it’s now 9/29, and it will be nearly two weeks for them to send it back still. Take your device somewhere local with great reviews. Do not be held hostage by this process!!

If I could give a lower rating I would. If I wanted to get the whole amount of my data, it would cost 1400. I only had 16gb. I’m not sure why it costs so much. Look somewhere else. I had to settle with $500 worth of data recovery & I don’t even know how much data that’s gonna be. Utterly disappointed. Look somewhere else.
