    Best bookself speakers

I was looking for a 2.1 stereo setup for a Panasonic receiver. Finally I had to choose between Bose 201 and Definitive promonitor 1000. At best buy they do not keep these speakers side by side to compare and take a decision. So I had to buy both Bose and definitive to test them at home and keep only one which I like. What I noticed is that the highs and mids are better in definitive where as the base is better in Bose. Also I wanted to check out the fatigue levels of long time listening. At the same treble settling the definitive is sharper, that means that you can lower the treble to match the softness of bose 201 and you get a clearer highs. The mids are much better in definitive at the same volume levels. Since I was looking for a speakers which can deliver good highs and mids at very low volumes. I choose to keep the definitive. But if you are looking for a good base the bose is better. You need to loosen up the speakers for atleast a week to get the best out of them since they are very stiff initially.

These small speakers sound much bigger than they are. Great imaging very accurate not too bright on the highs so movies are clear very happy with them.

The lows and highs are awesome, way beyond there size. They pack allot into them. The are fairly heavy but the optional mounting brackets handle them well.

Wait...they start to sound better after 20-40 hour break in? Excellent speakers for my little urban cottage. Thanks Def Tech!

Phenomenal Speakers, I use them for sides and rears, however with a solid sub these can easily be used as fronts if space is a consideration. As sides and rears they disappear when mounted on the wall using the ball mounts. Sound is crystal clear and when I eventually had an issue with one, DefTech service was top notch and shipped the part immediately.

Good with movies but you need a powered subwoofer to get full range of sounds. Very nice looking. Very flat on music, would not purchase if you are an avid music listener. I would buy B&W's, Polk Audio Tsi's, or Energy Eclipse for those purposes. There are much better for music.

Terrible speakers when you actually test them

To untrained ears, you set these up and watch a movie or listen to music, might sound good. I used these in my home theater for about 2 years. I bought a few other brands and tested them all at the same time, running them full range (took off my normal 80hz crossover), and these were the obvious loser. Really poor bass, which I knew def techs were bad at bass when I tested their sub vs other subs same time, the bass radiators do a terrible job. I wasn't using a calibrated mic and measurements, but to my ears, it was clear the treble was really elevated, and any sort of mid bass to bass was almost gone, all the instruments you can hear in other speakers, just weren't here, its missing a lot of frequencies. Give Polk signature series & Wharfedale diamonds a look in similar price ranges.

The ProMonitor 1000 is a smaller (satellite) speaker, and therefore not designed to reproduce a full range sound. They are designed to work with a sub-woofer in order for a full range sound to be experienced.
As there is no one speaker which works just right in every room type/shape/size, we have other means at hand to assist with making great speakers perform well in most domestic environments.
The most obvious solution - one you mentioned, but curiously chose not to use, is the easiest one for those with a modern surround sound receiver - auto calibration. Once you set-up the supplied microphone, activating the process is very straight-forward. After a few minutes of the speakers bouncing information around the room for the microphone to absorb, the processor makes the necessary corrections to maximize the sound quality delivered from your speakers.
How the speakers are positioned, and whether or not a room is furnished can also make a difference with how much performance can be had from great speakers like the Definitive Technology ProMonitor 1000.
