Worthwhile upgrade, with a few drawbacks

I had my old laptop for about 7 years and was due for an upgrade. Rather than spend $500 on one that would last for two years and struggle with the games I play regularly, I opted for this instead and have not been disappointed in the slightest. It's incredibly fast, has a good amount of storage, and is just an all around good computer. I also really enjoy having the ports on the back of the laptop, it makes my desk look more tidy and less cluttered with wires. I anticipate this one will last me 4-6 years.
There are a few minor cons which bring my review down from 5 to 4:
- Internal fan is quite loud. Not noticeable with headphones on though so no biggie. I'd recommend a second fan underneath to ensure adequate cooling is happening.
- The speakers are average, maybe even sub-par. This extends to plugging in headphones. Not sure why, maybe it's a setting on my end. But whatever the default is, the sound is just off.
- It's heavy and big. If you're looking for something super portable, I would not recommend this laptop. It actually doesn't fit in my above-average sized backpack so you may even need a dedicated carrying case for this.

While I cannot comment on the G7 for creation/productivity purposes I can share my opinion for use as a gaming laptop and there it has been excellent (~20 games installed... Borderlands 3, MK11, Doom, Destiny 2, etc.). I have had no performance issues (have it undervolted .157mv). I removed the 1tb 5400 rpm HDD and replaced it with a 1tb 3D nand SSD, I updated everything (all drivers and bios). I had issues with the Alienware Command Center software initially but after uninstalling all aspects of it and reinstalling it's all working as it should and allows me to have a performance/cooling profile for every application (I have it set to Performance/Cool for normal desktop use and idle temp is high 40's). I had the 17" Lenovo Y540 previous to this 17" G7 and while the Y540 had some aspects that were better (mainly the higher contrast 144hz screen) over-all the G7 is a better performer (regarding gaming). I have only used the headphone jack once and had no L/R issues (as another recent review mentions). I am mostly using a wireless Razer headset or the built-in speakers (which do not get that loud but don't distort like some other laptops that I have used). My unit was an open-box excellent certified that I purchased during the last flash sale and the price was unbeatable considering the package. I have only had it for a little over a week but it's been solid and I plan to add an extended Dell warranty if I keep it (an additional 3 years for ~ $150 is reasonable). I have 45 days to be sure (elite +) and will edit this review if I have any additional comments (pros/cons).

I really took my time and researched prebuilt gaming towers and gaming laptops configurarions vs initial price. This laptop hovering just about $1000 (Black Friday) is worth every dollar. I admit that I increased the memory to 32 GB (as I develop), but I did leave the 256 GB SSD/ 1 TB HDD config. As I bought the 5TB WD 3.0 USB external (also Black Friday) for $89- no need to switch UNLESS you get a great deal for a 1TB (minimum) internal SSD. Initial startup is still lightning fast and if you install games from Steam or even Gamepass (make sure your OS is upgraded or the BETA app will freeze your system during install) make sure the files are saved on the external- you will be set! I have run Modern Warfare and Gears 5 on it... #nice. If I had one "negative" about this laptop is that it can get loud when running a graphics heavy game. As I wear my headset while gaming- not an issue. Oh... if you are debating the Best Buy Replacement Plan... DON'T. It is worth the piece of mind especially if you plan on taking this everywhere and allowing others to use it. Can't tell you how many times someone (not naming names or ages...lol) accidently spilt soda on my machine or dropped it from a counter. Best Buy replaced as needed- no questions asked aside from basic ones.

Its not a super high end gaming laptop, but for $1500 it's a very good one! So far I've been able to run everything on high, or close to high, res with no trouble.
Battery isn't great, but honestly, if you get this for gaming or movies, it's going to be plugged in anyway.

Hubby's old computer was running quite slow and freezing up. It was old, and was originally a Windows 7 that we upgraded to Window's 10.
Even though he is not a "gamer", he does play a few games when he has time. This was an Xmas present and I chose this one to better "future proof" the need to replace because of the memory and screen items built in, plus we could try out the hard drive + 256 GB SSD set up to see if it works well.
I feel that it does... It is quite speedy when turning on from either sleep mode OR from off mode. No screen freezing like he had with his old one. Screen is quite clear and vivid colors. Actually was hoping he would say something about wanting mine, so I could take his (ha ha ha)

I was searching for a gaming laptop that was very good for my kids but did not break the bank in its purchase, and this laptop did just that. The speed is very amazing and it holds on its own very well when playing the sims 4, roblox and minecraft. This laptop is even strong enough to play more complex games, but since it is for my children I cannot personally verify it. Either way I am very happy with purchase and price. The only complaint is that it does not have a cd drive. However, not many laptops are having one so I guess it is becoming extint. Other wise great purchase

This is a great laptop for just about any use.
I bought it for college work, to play some games, and to do photo/video/audio editing, and it does everything perfectly. It feels durable and not cheaply built. Screen hinge feels sturdy. Runs quickly (and processes things fast too!). Screen looks great, keyboard is nice.
One thing that is impossible to tell from the pictures that I found as a nice surprise: the keyboard backlighting is (almost) fully customizable, from color to brightness to light mode. This pc comes with the Alienware Command Center for customizing games, fan speed, audio, macros, etc.
No real complaints about this laptop. Only real thing that bums me out a little is that the casing material does show fingerprints/oil/grease and that the screen isn't the brightest on the market. But don't let those things deter you!
Also, one other note: I've had this laptop for less than a month, carry it in my school backpack in a padded laptop pocket, but after about a week or less of carrying it without the protective pad that blocks the screen from scratching on the keyboard, it started to mark. Luckily nothing permanent, a microfiber cloth got rid of it easily, but if you care about your screen, definitely invest in some sort of pad to prevent keyboard-screen scratching. I'm using the pad that came with it until I can find a large enough microfiber cloth to keep inbetween.
As for battery, it's been great to me. When I'm running on battery, I keep it on maximum battery saver, usually lowest or close to brightness, and use it for homework and web browsing. In this type of use, the battery can last 6-10 hours. Obviously when gaming or doing more intensive tasks that falls dramatically. I almost always have it plugged in when I can, and the Dell Power App has settings you can adjust to maximize battery life and longevity by having it not fully charge during specified times/days. If you know your schedule and want a long battery, this is a must do from Day 1.
This computer looks great, the blue highlights/tones on it stand out on the all-black, and it's subtle; not in-your-face like the red so commonly and unfortunately associated with "gaming laptops" of today. Definitely a sight for sore eyes.
TL;DR: This is a great laptop that runs very well and can power through just about anything you throw at it. You'd be hardpressed to find a better latptop for the price. 5/5 Dell. Great job.

I bought this laptop around 6 months ago to complement my gaming desktop. I travel occasionally, and always go to PAX East with some friends each year, and we wanted to do BYOC this year. Basically, I bought this to use on the road, but it has been my main gaming rig even at home.
I figured I would create a list of Pros and Cons.
Pros:
Looks Great
Doesn't feel cheap
Super nice 1080p display - extremely bright
Probably enough external ports for what you need
Camera quality is good
Surprisingly fast CPU when paired with SSD
Runs current AAA between 50-60 FPS (when not overheating)
17" monitor
Not too much bloatware
Cons:
The RTX 2060 is crippled compared to the Desktop version
The extra drive was a 5400 RPM drive - replaced w/ SSD
HDD potentially contributes to overheating
Required BIOS update due to FPS loss
Occasionally freezes for a few seconds
CPU overheats (use Throttlestop or similar, and a cooling pad)
1080p 60Hz vs 1440p 144Hz (1440p would have been nice)
Built in speakers are somewhat janky
Loud cooling fans (just wear a headset and it's not noticeable)
I did get a discount when I bought it was it was right around my birthday. Having said that, if you can get this for a few hundred dollars less than the normal price, I would do it.
Final verdict: recommended

The Great: Bought this for the sturdiness, speed and features. Startup time is fast. Adobe Illustrator runs great, no problems so far. Battery time is fine. I enjoy the option to turn on night time lighting - this can even be custom-programmed for a specific time of day.
The Not So Great: Its not a light laptop, if you care about that don't buy this. The fan is a little loud if/when it comes on.

Bad battery life and laptop gets really hot especially when gaming. Otherwise awesome laptop, i use it for everything from work and college to gaming nd watching movies. Really big due to screen size and about an extra inch in back for ventilation nd connectors. Not bulky but it is really big. Invest in an external fan if you plan on playing games. Games look pretty great for a laptop at this price point.

This is a Very good gaming laptop, and a great laptop for all other uses. The Graphics card is great, very high frame rates. This is an actual RTX 2060 not the max-Q. Good sound, lots of storage, nice keyboard. The screen looks great, the only thing that would make it better would be a higher refresh rate on the screen (only 60hz).
Overall, I am highly satisfied with my purchase...

I'm a photographer and purchased this exclusively for photo editing. As others have mentioned, the speakers leave something to be desired. Also, when the fan kicks in this sucker is LOUD. Other than that I have no complaints. It's a powerful machine that never lags or freezes (I run the Adobe Photo Shop/Lightroom suite). Definitely recommend.

Dell has quality Gaming Laptop for less price compared to Alienware and other brands. The 17.3" screen is high quality GREAT HD graphics. The Video processor and CPU are powerful. Great value for the price. Back-light keyboard has customized color scheme, very cool. The only downsides are 1) You can only play 1 heavy CPU load game and no other apps 2) You must keep the laptop plugged into AC power outlet when playing, as when you unplug the laptop is auto-designed to throttle CPU, no work around for that 3) Fans run ALOT, trying to use cooling pad now but not helping so far. 4) this is a lunker, heavy laptop you will want to keep in 1 place, not moving around alot. Overall I am very satisfied with the purchase.

This machine meets my requirements and arrived on time. It was easy to transition form my old machine to the new one. The performance has been exemplary with all the gaming I enjoy (mostly strategic, turn based, some MMORPG). Video quality and performance is great on my 34" curved screen. I intend to upgrade the SSD as 256GB is becoming insufficient.

This laptop is nice and competes with other brands well in the same gaming category. My biggest con would be the price and extra 1 Tb drive performance, A little high for what ya get vs competitors. Extra drive is slow since its not a performance drive. Fan noise is expected when running a load. No heat issues to date. Slim design is great.

The Dell G7 is great value for money and has great specs for the price. I've had none of the issues raised by others who have reviewed. But my process with the G7 and all laptops is as follows.
1. Turn on, activate windows, install all updates.
(This is important because some Dell apps are Windows 10 store only and you need to have them register to your account).
2. Install any BIOS/firmware updates direct from Dell.
3. Burn a Windows 10 recovery USB.
4. Format and reinstall a CLEAN Windows 10
5. Install all updates
Enjoy!
My only mild complaint is the fans tend to run loud but I bought a Targus cooling pad from Best Buy and it has made all the difference ensuring the Dell G7 laptop gets proper cooling. If you're a gamer you should invest in a cooling pad.

Only issue I have with this computer is the speakers, they are downright awful. But everything else is great. It is quick, very fast boot, screen is nice, keyboard is comfortable, and the trackpad is surprisingly good. Overall great computer so far
