    Loving it so far

Shopped around for months looking for a laptop to replace my Macbook Pro. The keyboard and general sluggishness of MacOS ruled out any computers from Apple. I look at the Surface Book 2 (owned a Surface Pro 4 for a while and loved it) but the price kept me away. I purchased an HP Spectre x360 but constant fan noise and horrible trackpad kept me hunting. I saw the low-key announcement for Dell's G-Series gaming laptops and was intrigued. When I saw it on sale Memorial Day weekend, I couldn't resist. For the price, this is an amazing value. Pros + Amazing performance + RAM and both disk drives are user-upgradable + Number keys on keyboard + Ports!!! 3 USB A, 1 USB C, and HDMI + Windows Precision Drivers for trackpad + Matte screen (little glare in sunlight/bright lights) Cons - Screen quality isn't as good as compared to Macbook, Surface, etc. It's not bad in my opinion but is definitely lower grade than some competitors. - Bezels (really Dell? really?) - Occasionally the fans will get really loud. I think it's McAfee or some other program staring in the background. The noise only lasts for 30 seconds or so. Not a big deal but occasionally annoying. - Weight. Coming from a 13" Macbook Pro, this weighs over 2 pounds more. It's noticeable if your coming from a smaller laptop. I've played a few games (definitely be plugged in when gaming!) and am impressed with the GTX 1060. I have a GTX 1070 in my desktop so I have a comparison data point. Getting 70+ fps in Subnautica. Haven't tried my Oculus Rift yet but it should handle it without issue. If you're looking for a high-performance machine for a great price, get this. Sure you can get a better laptop but you'll pay for it. The comparable Alienware is several hundred dollars (based on when I compared prices mid-May) and doesn't seem to have any benefit other than a slightly better screen and an alien logo. If you're on the fence, go for it. You'll be happy.

Not a bad gaming notebook, but after buying it I first swapped out the 1tb that ran 70MB/s (terrible for gaming) to a 1tb SSD that ran 500MB/s. Since the windows cd key is in the bios I quickly crashed the 128gb SSD which runs 300MB/s (could be better) and installed a fresh copy of win10 home. No issues running any game at full graphics.. but the monitor does seem weak.. colors seem off and with only 60hz I was disappointed ... But for mobility I can't complain. Highly recommend to anyone that games but you will deffenitly want to swap that HD out for a SSD. If it wasn't for that and the weak monitor I'd rate it 5 stars... But again can't complain to much it's a notebook after all.

    Amazing but issues...

Absolutely great on running games on Ultra settings. Handles high temps well, the fans are loud but do an amazing job. HOWEVER, I bought it on July 1st and recieved my first issue with it on July 4th. The screen was black and the laptop was unusable. Nearly had a heat attack. A hard reset fixed the issue but the fact that a whole *3 days* passed before I had an issue that (briefly) made the laptop unusable is......terrible. A brand new laptop shouldn't have such a problem.

Hello there! Ever since I got my Dell G7, I've been having a blast with it when plugged into an outlet. But as soon as I disconnect the charging cable and attempt to do anything on battery, the laptop becomes completely unusable. Of course, I didn't expect the battery to be able to power the GTX 1060 inside, and I'm not planning to play demanding games while on battery. My problem lies in the fact that the laptop is completely unusable! My girlfriend's Intel i3-4000M runs faster than my i7-8750H because unlike hers, as soon as I go on battery, my CPU speed is limited to 800 MHz, according to Task Manager. Opening a web browser may be possible with 5 minutes of patience, but watching videos or doing anything more complex than reading a word document is pretty much impossible. As I've said, the machine is 100% unusable while in this vegetative mode. I've tried switching things around the BIOS, I tried creating alternative power plans, and setting the minimum CPU power usage to 50%, 75% and even 100% in the existing "Dell" and "Balanced" power plans as well, but to no avail. I'm out of options, as there seems to be no real answer online. Is this something that can be worked around? I thought that going on battery would mean playing on the integrated Intel Graphics 630 instead of the GTX 1060, not that it would make my computer slower than a 5-year-old budget laptop. Thank you in advance for the help. A worrying costumer

So far I have given it five stars except for the 128 gb ssd is just too small these days. While the price would have gone up, a 250/256 gb makes more sense. The screen is nice, the weight is good, and the build quality is very good. The keyboard takes a little getting used to, but the trackpad is excellent. It has a great number of ports, and I really appreciate the ethernet port being present. Also the fact that there is a thunderbolt port is a really plus for me. I would liked to have seen USB-C/Thunderbolt charging, but I suspect that is coming. Sound is alright, nothing exceptional. I would have preferred an Intel wireless to Killer since Intel seems to have fewer issues in the long run (plus intel is 100% supported under Linux). Bloatware, yep there is a lot of bloatware, and the 1803 update by Microsoft makes it worse. I spent over an hour uninstalling, and stamping out the bloatware. Games run well, and neither my daughter or I have seen any stuttering, thermal throttling, or screen tearing so far. The Dell Bios update bricked the laptop, and I had to do an emergency reset to factory specs which allowed me to boot into Windows. Be careful with this feature. Also the Nvidia controller tried to update the video drivers, and it did not go well, so use caution because your milage may vary. I can and will recommend this laptop to those looking for a gaming laptop. I will later replace the ssd with a larger one.

Hands down best computer I've had let alone laptop. Got it specifically for wow based on the specs and some research on Google (I'm not an expert). I don't need the $1900 super laptop (alienware) and I'm so happy I didn't since I don't need all the features it had but this isn't no cheap throwaway either (picked it up for $900 nothing inc). It does get hot but hey it's fast nothing a fan under it can't fix. It's a bit heavy but I consider that to mean it's durable and I don't mind it. Short story buy it if you're playing WoW - Danzi from Smolderthorn (for the horde)

Great gaming laptop with the worst audio ever

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I am not a hardcore gamer and one of my main use cases is online binge watching for which I need really good audio. I bought this Dell G7 i7-8750H laptop just for the advertised MaxxAudio feature which supposedly produces great sound. But I was so disappointed to see that even volume at max (100) sounded insignificantly low (like you have to keep your ear 3 inches close to the speakers to hear properly). However when I ran the Sound Test from the MaxxAudio Pro app, the speakers sound loud and fantastic but I could never get even half of that quality otherwise, which means that it is not a hardware issue but rather a software (driver) issue. I have to say that the Dell customer support was excellent though. They patiently tried their best for 2 hours over the phone by doing all sorts of firmware and driver updates but the volume just never got better (in the end, they offered to ship it for free to to get it checked out) I later found out that this is a recent software issue on many Dell G series laptops with the MaxxAudio feature (https://www.dell.com/community/Inspiron/Dell-G5-5587-Speakers-Volume-Very-Low/td-p/6132029) which their engineering team is supposedly working on, though it is disappointing that something as fundamental as sound was not validated properly by Dell. It wouldn't be fair if I didn't point out the positives. If you're a gamer who prefers using headphones and is looking for a cheap but solid gaming laptop, then this is THE one to buy! At $1200, the specs (i7, 1060 6G, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD) are a great bargain! I tried FIFA 19 and COD: BO 4 and got 100+ fps on both of them at Ultra settings. The fan doesn't get too loud while gaming. And who knows, if Dell manages to fix the volume issue, then this would be a great laptop, period!

We had a problem with the first one but Best Buy promptly replaced it with no hassles. Its a good gaming laptop with good cooling. Son loves it. I upgraded the SSD. Easy to service. Dell has a good service manual online which others don't provide. I will say that Dell support isn't all that helpful but they do have documentation thats good and Best Buy was a good seller.

This laptop has exceeded my expectations. Extremely well built. I was very much concerned about the quality of the screen, but I found the screen to be overwhelming. If you are feeling the brightness of the screen is low, you may increase the same by -> Right click on desktop -> Open Intel UHD Settings -> Color management -> Increase the brightness to the desired level.

first off I had the lower end g7 model first, had to return two of those for overheating issues, then got this one as a replacement the third time. seems to be working good so far, no overheating issues, hope it stays that way. I really like the specs on this one, very powerful hardware etc. im just hoping this g7 keeps working well. I will update if anything changes. overall this is a great laptop for the money. and thank you best buy for taking in my returns and replacing them.

    Best Option for Upgrades

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this while on sale for $1099 after doing the math on upgrading the SSD and monitor. The price came in well below the other Dell options for video editing. Installed a Samsund 500 GB SSD for $150, and a 120hz Monitor for $56, installed a new copy of Windows, updated the drivers, and this thing is rocking!!! For those that complain about audio noise or whatever, keep in mind this thing ships with Drivers from March of 2018. Most of the Drivers, including audio, were recently updated by the manufacturer in January of 2019. So its a must that even if brand new, you go to dells website and choose their option for auto updating the drivers. Then manually choose the ones they find that are out of date. BTW, this thing is crazy quiet IF youre not using it for gaming.

Problems with RAM upgrade and SSD Upgrade

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've had this laptop for about 3 weeks now. While it's a great value, be careful if you're planning on upgrading the RAM and SSD. I spoke to DELL tech support (which by the way hung up on me after they could not solve my problem) and read a lot of comments online, this model is not compatible with most memory cards with performance. The only RAM compatible with this model is DELL which costs a ton of money and Crucial which is out of stock. Also for the SSD or if you're trying to add an SSD into an empty slot, you will have major problems booting up the laptop and it will get stuck on DELL logo when booting up after SSD install. Even though things i mentioned above suck, i still like this laptop for the money, it's better if you buy it with 16GB memory instead of 8GB.

    Bang for Buck King

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this laptop to use as a mobile workstation for school, as well as the occasional game. With the specifications it has, it handles both flawlessly. Battery life when doing productivity (web browser, a virtual machine running, and writing software) is actually really respectable for a machine with this size battery. It also stays very quiet during these tasks. That said, it can shred 1080p gaming when you want to play. It does get loud during games, but that is to be expected. Price for what you get, this is absolutely the best bang for buck machine out right now, and it doesn't look out of place in an office environment either A+
