About a week after the purchase, the computer made pinging sounds. The geek squad technician diagnosed the problem as a motherboard failure. We purchased another laptop.

I have never been more disappointed in a product. I had to update an application and I was told I did not have enough space on my hard drive. It was then I discovered that the operating system used over 27 of the 30 gigs of the hard drive. I bought this computer for my wife to use for writing and e-mail so basically the only program on the computer is Office 365. I would never recommend this computer to anyone.

I found this on the open box shelf. It has limited hard drive space. The processor os reminiscent of 64 Bit computer speeds. Avoid at all costs.

Good laptop, needs more memory and HD space...

I was looking for a laptop primarily to surf the internet and possibly some light work in Microsoft office. I was well aware of the size of the "hard drive" which is essentially just flash memory. What surprised me was: of the 32GB of hard drive space, you only get about 29GB of storage and, of that, about 20GB is taken by the operating system. (which only leaves 9GB of usable space) I used a Sandisk CruseFit 32GB USB3.0 flash drive and configured it to act as a hard drive. I just leave it in all the time. (There is 1 USB3.0 high speed port and easily configured as a hd) This gives enough space for what I need. The other thing to note is that the 2GB of memory generally runs 80 to 100% capacity for normal operations. I swapped it for a 8GB Kingston DDR3L (note ddr3 will NOT work) and now the RAM memory is running about 20 to 25%. (Easy swap: two screws on bottom to pop off cover) This made a HUGE difference in the performance. The touchscreen seems to work well. The keyboard is not real sensitive... it helps to be an "aggressive" typist. The CPU seems capable but does peg to 100% on occasion (adding the RAM really helped.) NOTE: Surfing with Microsoft EDGE is very choppy. Switch to Firefox fixed the problem. With those changes, I really like the laptop. May want to factor the additional costs if considering a purchase. Dell almost got it right on this one.

Needs Upgrades To Be Useful

This COULD have been a very good compact laptop, but Dell cut some essentials. You will need to spend about $50 to upgrade RAM memory and storage to make it a useful computer. Dell could have made those upgrades at the factory for less than $25.
First, the 32gb solid state storage drive is far too small. After a few months of updates to Windows 10 and to Microsoft Office, you will have less than 6gb of open storage space for your programs, apps, photos, videos and music.
The solution is to buy a 32gb or 64gb fast Class 10 U3 MicroSD card, which will be as fast as the Dell hard drive. In a standard SD card adapter, it will stick out half an inch and may get damaged. You can Google to find "mini" MicroSD adapters designed for Apple laptops. With an Apple adapter, the card will seat flush with the side panel of the Dell and provide permanent storage for your music, photos, and videos.
Second, 2gb of RAM is not enough for Windows 10. When you have two or three apps running, the Dell will slow down or freeze up.
The Dell web store sells a 4gb RAM module for around $20. Just pop off the door on the bottom front of the laptop. Release the two clips on the old module and slide in the new 4gb module until the clips lock. YouTube has a video to show you how to do this in under ten minutes.
With the 4gb RAM module, the Dell will run smoothly.
Frankly, this may be more trouble than it worth. Best Buy sells laptops in the same price range that have 4gb of RAM and 500gb hard drives. The Inspiron is two pounds lighter than those models, which is the only good reason to put up with its limitations.

Nice PC for the price

This is a pretty decent computer, all things considered. If you are in need of superior computer power then you may want to look elsewhere. This PC is designed for light use, such as surfing the web, document creation, etc. If you want somethinf that can handle your heavy duty Excel files, with macros and pivot tables and so on, then this may end up frustrating you. Also, this is not a machine designed for gaming. Solitare? Sure. Call of Duty? NO! This is good for a young student, or for a second PC to have around the house. Something that will let you get on the web. The touch screen is a nice incentive. I bought mine as an open item so I got a pretty good deal on it.
