    WORST ORDER EVER

I was really excited about this product and the deal I was getting. Then I actually received the product. First of all, it came with a virus on it. Really weird old school adware the second I opened it. Please keep in mind I paid the extra money to get this product Geek Squad certified. It came with sticker residue as if someone ripped off a giants sticker and I had to use Goog Gone to remove it before even opening it,. I then took it to Best Buy to get them to fix it and explain the situation and the kid working customer service tells me I'll be responsible for paying the fees to repair it. NOPE. I then spoke to a manager and he offered to return it through customer service as it was a $400 model of the same computer , much older and not at all what I ordered (this model is closer to $1000). He ordered me a new one and supposed to call me when it came in, and it has now been over a week. I really hope I get a good discount but beware open box Geek Squad certified purchases until they resolve their SKU issue and check serial numbers to confirm your order is even correct!

Again I find myself very disappointed not with the hardware but the operating system Windows 10 that ultimately made my decision not to keep a Windows-based product but rather continue with MacBook.

    Great Laptop, Some flaws

First of all, let me say that I really find other people's reviews of products helpful, so I thought I'd review this Dell Laptop. I purchased it knowing that one of the first things I was going to do is replace the hard drive. A 5400 rpm hard drive is just too slow for my needs. I put a 512GB solid state drive in this laptop, and did a clean installation of windows 8.1. If you are looking to do the same, the case was pretty easy to crack open. It has 6 screws that totally come out, and 4 that just loosen. You then just CAREFULLY pry open the plastic bezel and you have access to the battery, Hard Drive, and Memory DIMM slots and all the other internal components you should not be touching unless you have a decent idea on what you are doing. My biggest advice: Take your time. Go slow. Mark each screw on a piece of paper so you are sure you are putting each screw back in the exact hole it came out of. Sometimes those screws are a turn smaller or longer and can mess up your system board if you put them back wrong. Just take your time. You need a Solid State Hard Drive no larger that 7mm, in case you were wondering. The system comes with 12GB of memory and is upgradable to 16GB I priced a 16GB memory kit out at 156 bucks, and felt that the increase of 4GB of memory is not worth that cost at this point in time. (I might do it at some point in the future, if memory comes WAY down in price, which it does from time to time.) A clean install of windows was VERY fast booting off of a USB 3.0 thumb drive. (no optical drive in this laptop) Windows 8.1 could not find WIFI drivers that would work with the INTEL Wireless adapter by itself, so I had to grab one off of the DELL web site to get the PC connected to the web. A note about the drivers on the DELL web site: They are already outdated. I have a very fast (over 100 meg) internet connection and with the DELL supplied drivers I could only get about 40 megs when all my other devices get over 100 on WIFI. It took some digging at the Intel web site but I found newer drivers and installed them and I am up over 100 on my new laptop now. Once I got the WIFI issues figured out, all my other application installs were very fast and uneventful. It took a couple of tries to get all the INTEL chipset drivers to install, but everything hardware related seems to be running fine now. The screen is stunning. I "You Tubed" some 4K content and it looks spectacular at full screen. Some 4K content from my phone also looks very nice at full screen as well. I have noticed the scaling issues with some applications that others have noticed. Photoshop CC was a JOKE it was so small, but after some digging I found a setting that makes it look great. (My Photoshop plugins are going to be a different story, but I'll work on those as time goes on.) Windows media player does not scale well and all it's controls are VERY small. Hopefully Microsoft will get around to an update for that sometime soon. The touch screen isn't something I was REALLY interested in, but it's nice to have, now that I have one. I have mostly been using a wired mouse, but found the touchpad to work well, without too many issues. I just prefer a mouse. (A new bluetooth mouse is in my near future) Partially powered by my installed SSD Drive, the power up from sleep is literally 2 seconds from opening the case to desktop. On a full power off, the system comes up very fast (about 30 seconds from power on to desktop) I have not really PUSHED anything on the machine hard, (in terms of processing power demands or very large files) yet, but just messing around with some applications and testing to see if everything I want to run on it does run the machine seems REALLY quick. I would have not been happy with the 40 meg WIFI speeds had I not found newer drivers, so I am glad I got that worked out, and am, so far, very happy with my new machine.

This review is more for MS than Dell. Every day computer shuts down: Internet explorer has encountered a problem and is shutting down. If not IE then Windows or Excel or Office and all is lost. Even when I am not working it shuts down. Can tell when I come back to get in. Running windows 8.1. If I had known I would have purchased Mac. Shame Dell has to associate with Microsoft.
