This Ultra HD computer kept eating my software and freezing. Also would not load half of my software. I brought this back - got another one which did the same thing and brought that back also. Bad computer

This Dell laptop is a great overall machine. It strikes a good balance between power consumption and speed. I use this laptop for software development, graphic editing and video transcoding. I even tried installing Steam and playing modern 3D games which to my surprise looked great and ran at a good frame rate. The memory can be upgraded to 16GB by replacing the 4GB module with an 8GB module and you can replace the hard drive with an SSD very easily, and both upgrades can be completed for under $200 total. The display on this laptop is amazing. It's a 4K display that runs at 60Hz and the touchscreen is perfect. I actually replaced my Retina MacBook Pro with this laptop because this screen is measurably better than Apple's screen. Dell decided to remove the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard and center the remaining keys which is a pleasure to type on. The touchpad is response and predictable and while there are only a few ports, they provide everything you need. Want gigabit Ethernet? Just order a $25 USB 3.0 to gigabit Ethernet adapter. Overall this is a great machine. I'm very sensitive to computers that can't keep up with me and over the past month this laptop hasn't let me down once.

I paid only $500 for open box of this item. It is worth it. But the flip side is its battery life. It does not last for even 2 hours per charge. Rest is all good.

I just started college for the second time and needed a new laptop. I am going for Network Security and needed something light yet powerful. I stumbled upon this laptop, despite being another brand "fanboy", after searching for nearly two months (literally). I ordered it on a Friday at 8:45 AM choose store pickup and got an email at 8:55 that it is ready. (It was hard to pay attention in class) The first thing I did was replaced the hard drive with a SSD (2 second boot). Than bought a 2.5 external hard drive enclosure (from Best Buy) for a 1 terabyte external. I am not a fan of the 2 in 1 laptops. I wanted just a normal laptop. The touchscreen is just a plus. After reinstalling Windows 10, I had no need to download addition drivers. The battery I cannot comment on due to I never had to use it for longer than 2 hours. But I can say if I use it 2 hours a day running Office, and general web surfing, I can go 4 days without charging it. I haven't tested it out for gaming since I grew out of that. I had this laptop for exactly a month and I love it! Dell won me over for the first time!

Okay for normal use but not for gaming/editing etc

The shared GPU is an Intel Graphics HD 5500 which is perfect for most normal tasks such as web surfing and photo viewing, light editing etc. The dedicated AMD Radeon R7 m270 with 4Gb looks good on paper but lost in benchmarks against my older Dell and Toshiba in comparison. The GPU is essentially the low end as far as performance. It is an upgrade from the AMD Radeon R7 M265. I ran 2 benchmarks to get the GPU/CPU performance, in 3DMark I used a test which is essentially used for testing run of the mill laptops. I figured with the dedicated GPU (set correctly) the scores would be great but the results were actually very poor. My best result was 4594 and in layman terms that equaled to about 100% lower than a 2013 gaming laptop. The higher end benchmark indicated the same, 1285 which is more than 100% lower than a 2013 gaming laptop. The limitations that attributed to the lower scores were the low end of GPU, the dual core i7 and the 1TB 5400rpm drive. At best, any games would not run over HD resolution and that is with lowest settings possible. I realized that this laptop was not a gaming laptop as it is marketed to be, but the specifics made me believe the performance would be much better than it actually was. It was purchased for video editing and audio multi tracking. These applications utilize hyper threading which takes advantage of i7 quad core processors. This CPU i7-5500ou is dual core, meaning that it sips power compared to the quad core variants but if you want speed and power, you will pay for it with less efficiency. Not a big deal if you spend most of the time AC powered. The i7-5500OU is a perfect CPU for normal tasks but not so much for video editing and other CPU intensive applications. The battery will last you a good 4hrs under normal use due to the 15w of power it needs compared to most quad-core variants that use 45w or power. The laptop has dedicated space for (1) 2.5" drive, the current HDD should be replaced with a SSD as the first upgrade, as the 5400 rpm drive is slow. This CPU supports 16GB, it comes with 12GB (8GB + 4GB) so you would need to remove the 4GB chip and replace with 8GB to get the max supported. This laptop also supports PCIe M.2 SSD. If you aren't aware of the technology, Google it and come back but adding a M.2 PCIe (important) will give you drive transfer speeds 4x the SSD SATAIII (theoretically). The price is not cheap but figure $350 on average for a 500GB PCIe M.2 SSD. If this laptop was maxed out with 16Gb for RAM (DDR3-1600) and had a quad-core i7, it would be perfect with a PCIe SSD installed! But do you buy a laptop knowing that you will replace and upgrade every possible component immediately? If you have the money to burn, do it but otherwise you will still be limited to only 16GB RAM and a dual-core i7 which for me is a huge limitation. In closing , I purchased this laptop during Black Friday sales, at the time it was discounted as a display model and for Black Friday it was available with an additional 30% off which brought the cost to well under $600 for 12Gb RAM, ultra HD and i7-5500OU with a dedicated AMD Radeon R7 M270 which is roughly 50% off new price. This laptop was purchased to essentially replace my existing 2011 Dell XPS i7-2630QM L702x with dedicated Nvidea GPU and now running two SSDs for the ultimate in speed. My current limitations are the 2nd generation CPU maxes out at 8GB and the 1GB dedicated GPU is not great for video editing and audio engineering. The Dell 7548 is a perfect laptop for NORMAL tasks, surfing, watching YouTube, MSOffice type stuff but not for gaming, video editing type tasks or anything remotely graphic and or CPU intensive. I am not an expert but I learned a lot to understand what were the bottlenecks on this new laptop and how they impacted me. The 7548 is a high end laptop for normal use. The pre-installed Windows 10 Home version is nice, once you remove Cortana and all the MS / Dell software, the i7-5500OU performed nicely for running the OS. BIOS is very simple, no extra options available other than boot priority etc. The 7548 comes with a pre-installed Windows 10 home USB restore stick which takes about 45-50 minutes to wipe and make factory fresh when needed. If you do get this laptop, make sure you uninstall all the Dell software, Cortana, Edge etc., and install the newest AMD Crimson drivers for the Radeon GPU. I also recommend installing a fresh copy of the OS, the activation key is pulled from the BIOS so no worries of ever loosing it. Sadly, I returned the laptop yesterday because it was a phenomenal bargain but the performance was lacking too much and for my needs. This laptop would be 100% perfect if it came with a quad-core as it makes that much of a difference. I think the two biggest limitations are the dual-core CPU and HDD, one you can fix but the CPU and 16GB max you are stuck with. My search continues for the perfect replacement. Now, I am looking at a ASUS ROG, lots of upgrade options and comes with some decent specifications including SSD, M.2 support, 7200 RPM HDD, 16GB and 4GB GPU with a i7-6700HQ QUAD-core for roughly $1600. If you can get the Dell 7548 on sale, I think its worth every bit of $600-650 but its not worth anything close to $1000 in my opinion.

Decent all-purpose laptop, but okay with games

After years of using my 2009 MacBook Pro, I decided to get a new Windows 10 machine with touchscreen. It would have to have a 15" screen, i7 or equivalent AMD processor, and a decent graphics card to play some games periodically. At Best Buy, I compared this Dell machine with an HP Envy for about the same price, but the 4k screen and extra video RAM sealed my decision. My local store did,not have any of these in stock, so I ordered an open box computer from Best Buy and got it in a few days. Overall, this machine is fast enough for web surfing, word processing, video editing, and some gaming. I installed the Steam client software to test out modern games on it and the Dying Light demo ran smoothly at a dialed down resolution of 720p. Bottom line: great all-purpose computer, but it slows down when running graphic intensive software at higher resolutions.

I am not computer savvy, and I actually had this computer for several weeks before I finally started setting it up. It is very "intuitive" and has been easy for me to get going, up to a point. That point is where I'm going to have to relearn a lot because Windows 10 is so foreign to me. But with the help of some friends, I should have it set up soon. My problem is figuring how to transfer my data (photos, documents, bookmarks, address book, etc.) from the old to the new. But I am pleased with the computer itself thus far. Its speed impressed the heck out of me! And the clarity on the screen is great for my aging eyes. I know I'm going to like using this computer. I wish I could go into more detail, but like I said...not computer savvy!

I am very happy with this Dell. It seems to be a good value for the price. It came pre-installed with Windows 10 (no wait or extra charge to load) and I like the large/high-res screen (3840x2160 pixels!). Too many laptops have wide screens like 768 pixels vertically, which I don't find to be enough.

Had this for about 5 months now. I really enjoy the screen, its about as good or better than the 5k Apple Imac in some instances. The screen is the best for viewing HD photos, and anything that requires color detail. As for the negatives- speakers are terrible. Dell put them on the bottom of the laptop for no reason making them so bad. Speed is decent, not great for a i7 processor. I would suggest to buy this for the screen ONLY.

Depends on what you're using it for

Let's start with the good Resolution is beautiful. Even batter than the Mac. Starts up quickly for not have SSD. For a big laptop, not super heavy. Windows 10 pre-installed and it's a huge improvement over the last release. The Negatives Terrible for photo editing. Always a system lag when using LightRoom. Lag can last up to a minute or two. You would think for a 12G computer this would be smoother. Track pad is basically useless. I have a wireless mouse that I use. Doesn't have a number pad on the side. (not crucial) Overall, if you're using this for surfing or school, it's a great laptop and will serve all your needs. However, if you're using it to run programs, it's definitely far from ideal.

I purchased this Dell to replace a 7 year old Sony Vaio VPC F1 series notebook and expected equal or better performance. Unfortunately this computer did not live up to the spec sheet and performed slower and lagged much more than my old Sony. When using inkscape for graphic design, the UI for the program has not caught up to the resolution of the 4k screen and all the toolbars are minuscule and barely legible. There is also a significant lag when just resizing vector images, which is ridiculous. This is going back into the box while I try and find a replacement.

I loved everything about this computer except the touchpad. The touchpad is inaccurate and difficult. Otherwise the computer was great. However after 2 months the hard drive totally died for no apparent reason, losing all of my data during final exams. I'm told by the Geek Squad that it will take about 2 weeks to have this shipped to Dell and get it back. A long time to be without your laptop. I'm hoping this was a fluke.
