Great general purpose laptop for the price

My wife had been getting by with a small/slow older netbook for general computing usage (Web browsing/bill paying/finding recipes, face book, etc.). We were looking for a low cost but not low performance laptop and I saw this on sale at bestbuy.com. This Dell is exactly the right mix of solid performing cpu, plenty of storage space, and good (11ac) wifi performance. Throw in a very decent screen, and a well laid out, solid keyboard and this is a bargain for the money. This is nothing fancy, but designed and built well with the right mix of features at this price point. You can easily pay this much and end up with a much poorer performing laptop. The Intel Core i3 is plenty powerful/fast enough for most day to day computing uses, 4gb ram is adequate unless you do a lot of multi-tasking. Happy wife (smooth running, capable laptop) & happy husband (did not have to empty wallet)!

    Good Laptop

It's a good laptop for a good price, what I like is that it has a 1TB hard drive, if you buy a laptop with 500GB have to invest 80 dollars more for a hard drive if you want more capacity, memory is expandable but you have to remove the keyboard to access it that I do not like, it is a bit slow to open several applications but it is worth, has a HD camera, has USB 3.0 and 2.0 and although the picture is not seen comes with CD / DVD, this laptop is essential for daily use and not for games, has powerful speakers and 15-inch HD screen, the keyboard I do not like much, the fan makes no noise and finally, the touchpad is not bad. I recommend this laptop.

This is the Laptop you would love to have for light to medium usage. I agree 4GB RAM may fall short for heavy processing Application but just for Browsing and MS-Office related work for home use , this unit is the BEST. There could be many thing would love to have but you must consider the amount you are spending. In the age of ever changing technology the gadgets become obsolete faster than you think. Hence spending a whole lot did not make any sense to me..300 bucks and pretty good unit was my Winning Criteria. Only other thing I would have loved to see in this price is with Backlit. I miss that , but I can live without it.

Good for school, not for gaming.

Laptop is good for light to moderate use such as classwork and surfing the web. I purchased for my brother since his laptop is in need of upgrading. This has a pretty good cpu oppose to the AMD-A6. In addition, imo, this is not for gaming, even if you put graphics on low settings, you might as well save up $250-300 more and build a good computer. Ram and storage is what I like/dislike about this laptop. I upgraded the ram to 6GB and changed the hard drive to an SSD. You'll see some comments in regards to this laptop being slow, of course, it has a mechanical. This came with a 5400 mechanical oppose to a 7200 which was odd. In that case, I HIGHLY recommended investing in a SSD for fast boot up times and quick access to programs. SSDs are amazing and have been in a decline in price the past year. Sandisk and PNY usually runs some great deals.

    Does the Job

I bought this laptop for my daughter to use in her last couple of years of high school and into college. The specs are middling - not terrible, not great. I would not purchase this computer for graphics or processor heavy tasks (no gaming, no 3D engineering / modeling), but for a teenage girl's school needs, this is a fantastic buy. In the brief amount of time we've had this computer, it seems to be a good machine. It was easy to set up, and there's not a ton of bloatware pre-installed (I had to remove McAfee in order to install my preferred antivirus software, and that was it). There are some fairly intrusive location and data sharing options turned on by default, but those are Windows 10 settings, and not Dell's or Best Buy's fault., and are also easy enough to turn off. The build is pretty solid, and the power transformer isn't a giant brick (it's quite tiny, actually). At this price point, even if something disastrous happens to the computer, it's not a terrible thing to replace. The most important part is that the girl likes it, and knows how to use it.

I have had my Sony Vaio for so many years that it was time to upgrade, but I really hate to spend so much on a computer. I started searching and found this computer. It's very lightweight, easy to use, and nicely designed. The only thing that irritates me is that my fingerprints show up on the top of computer and other places, the material has a texture to it, but for some reason every time you touch it, it leaves your prints. It's easy to wipe off with a damp cloth but it is frustrating to me as I like a clean and polished computer. I also like the keyboard, it sets much more flat, and is protected by any spills. For minimal web surfing and basic computer uses, this is a great computer to have!

    Good for what it is

With 4GB of RAM and a 5400 RPM hard drive this laptop is going to be on the slower side. That being said, these things are upgradeable. Installing an extra 4GB of RAM to reach the maximum is roughly $20 and an hour of your time. The hard drive can be upgraded to either a SSD or a 7200 RPM option. This can get a little more costly, but if you want a cheap computer you can make your own this is your computer. If you want to buy something and have it be exactly what you want out of the box, read some information on what the different specs mean and move on.

Solid laptop but some initial issues.

First obvious issue I had with this laptop was that the trackpad is sightly off to the left instead of centered. It still takes quite some adjustment compared to other laptops. Secondly, upon the first start-up the FN key was not correctly working to adjust settings via the hot keys ( F1, F2, etc ). Had Dell troubleshoot with me but thesoftware fix ( via BIOS and chipset update) was a temporary issue and returned upon restart. It took some ingenuity and previous experienece to narrow down the problem to BIOS settings being incorrect from default. Besides those two minor quirks, the laptop runs smooth with the i3 processor. Programs are fairly snappy, keyboard feels good and the screen quality is decent for the price point. I'm satisfied thus far.

Was just looking for a simple laptop for school and this definitely fits the bill. Sure, it's a little heavy and the display and sound aren't top of the line but neither is the price. Also, it's a little slow due to the clunky windows 10 and only 4 gigs of ram, but both issues can be fixed. Another plus for students, if your college has paid for the license, you get a full version of MS Office for FREE!! This isn't unique to this laptop, but it was definitely a welcomed surprise and ticked one more box on my list of needs. I got it on sale, but even at the regular price, it's a great value.

    Incredibly slow boot up time

Not happy with the time it takes to boot up. It takes about 2mins 10 secs now "after" I scoured the internet for every "fix" possible. Config settings, to powering up options etc. It helped shave off about 20 seconds. So I thought maybe it was the Windows 10, which I upgraded to by accident, but now have no option to reset back to 8.1. I thought maybe it was the Kaspersky anti-virus. Uninstalled it and tried again. Didn't help the slow boot. So I guess I just have to live with it or return it. The touchpad that is off-center takes some getting used to as well. But for the price it will have to do.

    Best laptop for the money!

This laptop is GREAT for the money. Its not super powerful nor ultra high res but at the price point is unbeatable! I dropped in a 180 gig Intel SSD and another 4 gigs of RAM (now dual channel Memory) and it flies! Was decent before the upgrade. Not hard to upgrade if you are savvy. Not having a touch screen device is a virtue to me. Im tired of wiping screens down that have fingerprints! If simple is your goal than this laptop is for you!
