No DVD drive, but still typical laptop thickness
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall, the laptop does function well. It runs fast. Set up was fast and easy. Oddly, we did have to activate windows by clicking on a link before we could personalize the desktop. And we uninstalled McAfee Antivirus which required a restart. Disappointingly, it does not have a optical disc drive for DVDs and CDs. Most laptops that omit the optical disc drive are slimmer; that's the motivation to exclude it. However, this laptop is the thickness of a typical laptop. The base looks like a stock base, but where an optical disc drive would normally go, they put a flat, featureless cover instead. Kind of lame. I absolutely would not recommend this at the normal price ($599.99), but it was a satisfactory deal at the Black Friday price of $399.99.

Not that great. Save your time.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This does not seem like a 600 laptop on sale for 400 or whatever it ends up at. It's a 400 laptop that does not impress. Would like to save Best Buy and you time and money and look elsewhere. I wanted to like this laptop because of the specs and price, but just couldn't. Screen is very poor, build feel is cheap, not very snappy and speakers are terrible...I could go on for a while. Granted it was only 400 on black friday, but I thought I was getting a deal. Instead it felt like I got taken. This was not on display in the store and if it would have been I probably would not have bought it. I imagine best buy is getting a lot of these returned, as they should. I would recommend they do not advertise this as a $600 laptop. I ended up getting an Acer Aspire E15 for $550 that is head and shoulders above this item.

Windows 10 Activation kills the deal
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Alright-- this was a Thanksgiving gift from my wife. It looked like a good deal and the specs are ok for the price. The keyboard can be better. The lack of simple light indicators stump me. How much did they save? However, the biggest problem is that it keeps saying that my copy of Window 10 is not genuine and when I go to the settings, it says the product key is not valid. I am a Prof and am quite tech savvy and can solve this problem but I fear for someone who just does not want to jump through so many hoops on a new product. I mean this is a NEW product. This is simply not on. This is my 5th Dell computer and I am very disappointed at the lack of common sense displayed here. I am copying below the address where anyone facing the same problem needs to go. You need to update the software directly. It should work with the particular error code associated with this idiocy. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 I hope this helps. And Dell, even my freshmen students will display better quality control than you guys.

great NB - I bought 2!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I think this is the best NB I've ever had. The black Friday rice was sweet. Crazy good really. The wi-fi is not the lastest though. I wonder if there is an update for this. I bought two of these and a 2-in-1 on black Friday. The 2-in-1 is an i5 gen 8 (this one is gen 7). The wi-fi card in that one screams. 2x as fast as this one on the same network. Somehow faster than my rated speed. I get 75 on the 2-in-1. About 40 on this one. If someone knows of a wi-fi card for this one, please post a comment. This type of case isn't the easiest to open, but I did it on an older one to add the SSD. The wi-fi is right there. I wonder if a keyboard with backlighing is possible to swap out too?

Not an Apple - quality lacking
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So this is my first non-Apple product after many years. I originally swore off Windows after so many years of having to constantly update the OS, patches, with decline performance with each subsequent update. Apple doesn't make gaming machines, let alone anything with a 1060 which is the minimum for VR. I bought this originally after seeing so many positive reviews for it. Incidently, I bought the 256SD model after returning the 500MB model which was so slow it brought tears to my eyes. After buying I subsequently added my own 1TB drive and another 8GB of RAM. Overall quality of the chassis is OK, after all it's a budget gaming laptop. What I hate after more than 1 year is that it is so heavy and more recently the battery has failed. I've come to expect suspect quality from electronics now days, android phones especially. Software tends not to work. My expectations are getting lower and lower. So with Dell, having to replace my battery b/c I only get less than 2 hours on it and the BIOS diagnostics recommends to replace, a little over 1 year into it's life is a new low. I contacted Dell support and not only are they pushing their extended warranty but afterwards, they consider a battery consumable and not under warranty. Wow this is what $1000 gets you.

We're sorry that your computer is not performing the way that you hoped it would. We'd recommend the following tips to help extend the life of your battery:
Change the Power Plan:
1. On the notification area of the taskbar, right-click the Battery icon.
2. On the options list, click Power Options.
3. Select a power plan on the battery meter, such as Power Saver or Balanced. Windows 10 has a built in 'Battery Saver' mode that can be activated to extend your system's battery life. The Battery Saver mode will monitor and limit background activity and other features such as push notifications. You do have the option to enable or disable this mode within settings or within advanced Battery Saver settings, you can customize the mode to best suit your needs.
a) Click on the Action Center icon in the taskbar and select the tile for Battery Saver.
b) If running Cortana then type Battery Saver into the search box and select from the results.
Within the Battery Saver settings page, you will be able to turn on and off the feature and customize the feature to best meet your needs.
c) Turn Battery Saver On or Off.
d) Additional settings available via the Battery use and Battery saver settings links.
e) Battery use shows further info on apps and their power usage.
f) Battery Saver Settings screen allows you to customize further Battery Saver feature.

problems right after unpackaging
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I chose to purchase this product because, doing some research the specs were pretty good for the price. Well after I came home and unboxed the laptop I was pretty shocked in how cheaply it was made. Mind you, I bought 2 of these same computers. One for myself and one for my mother for Christmas. Now I understand why this computer wasn't on display. I continued to set up and was again angered. It wouldnt let me personalize because the windows 10 activation needed a key. I am not that tech savvy and spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong with this new computer i just purchased. Frustrated and tired I finally figured it out. There is no way my mother would be able to work through this problem. Needless to say, I will be returning the laptop tomorrow. I should have read the reviews before i made such a terrible purchase. Hope this will help people in the future

It's a good deal
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I do not regret buying it. The only thing I do not like, nor I expected is that the WIFI does not support 5Ghz. To be honest, Even if I had known about this WIFI issue I would have bought it anyway.

Returned for multiple reasons
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this as a Christmas gift in December 2018. I noticed immediately that it had a dead pixel, but I was willing to overlook that. Within a week, the dead pixel had turned into a pink line that went halfway across the screen. The laptop also had severe mouse lag, despite several steps I took to resolve it. And, I hated the placement of the touchpad. It was centered on the letter portion of the keypad instead of centered horizontally on the laptop itself, so I was constantly hitting it accidentally. I returned this within 10 days of purchase. I bought a more-expensive Asus instead and have been very happy with it.

Activate Windows 10?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Every time I turn on this computer, it asks me to activate Windows 10. I am not sure what I am supposed to do. I cannot find my product key. Can the Dell Team let me know what I am supposed to do?

DO NOT BUY!!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought 2 of these laptops...had to have the hard drive replaced on 1 before we even used it. Things happen, so i would have been ok if either PC actually worked. Plan to spend a minimum of 1 hour to get anything up and running. It often takes an hour to turn the PC on. I just spent 45 minutes trying to connect 1 to wifi, while my 10 yr old laptop, 1 of the dell laptops, 3 TVs, an iPad, and 2 cell phones are currently connected. That is a lot of devices...so you would think I could at least watch a dvd... nope! I am planning on posting a YouTube video to show what I go through to use these laptops since words cannot describe the frustration. I do not often take the time to write reviews, but in this case I must to prevent anyone else from wasting their money.

Dead after 3 months
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The computer won't charge or power up after 3 months of light use. Either the power adapter is dead and/or the power connector on the laptop is defective (it seems to be loose and not solid). Called support and they said it's not cover by the "basic" warranty and that I would have to pay $39 just to ship it to them to take a look and then additional cost for whatever they find out to fix. No thanks, I'm not giving more money to a company that doesn't stand behind their product. Never buying or recommending another Dell again.

Done with Dell
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have always used Dell computers at home and work. after only four months this laptop would no longer boot and I sent it to Dell in Houston for repair under the warranty. I have been without my laptop for 16 days now and I am told that parts are on back order. when you call Dell to inquire about the repair you speak to someone in India or the Philippines, if you can get through to anyone at all. i’ve been told my computer needs a new fan which is on back order. I don’t even think this laptop has a fan in that it is a solid state hard drive. I don’t trust what I am being told, never again Dell.
