    Great Value for an Open-Box

I did some research on Core i7 laptops and found this one to have the power and features I wanted. If you are looking at this laptop, or any laptop for that matter, go directly to your local store and specifically ask to see their open box inventory. This laptop was tucked away at $599.99. This is a great price for a new laptop with these features. Your results may vary but always check the store open box first and you may find a similar or better deal. Also, and this became very important with this model, make sure the Dell Update system is up and running. This laptop had several updates that it sucked in for hardware tweaks. THEN, visit the Dell Support site and download the latest firmware. My touchscreen stopped working a few days after I had this and NOTHING got it working until I updated the firmware directly from the website. After that update, this laptop has been a champ. Absolutely flawless.

All good except for the SSD. Dell cunningly concealed the details about SSD on this model. Its not PCIe or m.2. Its a plain old sata 3 interface. In the model i purchased, it had a SK hynix SC308 SATA 256GB SSD, which is actually a shame for a laptop of this quality. This laptop deserve a PCIe SSD which can raise the performance many fold. USB-C is not thunderbolt but doesn't matter much as of now.

Great laptop at a great price

I originally purchased a HP low level laptop (AMD, 4GB ram, 500 storage) thinking I would only use it for browser and light Word usage. Of course, I ended up using the laptop for more than that and it was just too slow for what I needed it for. So I returned it and purchased this Dell instead. I've had this laptop for 2 weeks now. I love it. I also own an IMac and this laptop runs just as fast. I'm glad that I purchased this laptop instead of dishing out the extra bucks for a Macbook. This laptop runs my Windows games that aren't available for Mac. Pros: - It is VERY fast. The 12 gigs of ram are great. - It is lightweight. - It looks stylish. - Runs all my programs and games without any lag. Cons: - When I first got it, the fan was loud. It worried me because that's what I saw on some of the reviews I read before I purchased it. However, the fan rarely comes on anymore and if it does it is so quiet that I don't hear it at all. - The notifications telling me to sign up for my free McAfee subscription or the Dell notifications to update this and that are annoying. Overall, this is a terrific buy especially with the $100-$150 discount that Best Buy is offering. I am happy with this purchase and would recommend this product.

So pretty... works fast, quick set up... starts up within seconds after initial turn on. Plays simple pc games just fine, no issues with keyboard and I have been using a mouse with it. All in all, it's everything I wanted and meets all my demands and with the sale price it is just awesome!

Purchased in December for $699. A good price for this machine. A very good computer when it's running correctly. Fan is too loud if you work in a quiet location.

Absolute Monster! The star of the price range

I wanted a notebook under $1000 That had more than 8g of ram, an i7 processor, and the ability to use an egpu (VIA the mpcie slot). This thing delivers! I have been playing fallout 3 on High nonstop, and that's with the onboard graphics card! Haven't seen it get bogged down yet. The look and feel is also stunning, I like the weightiness. If you want a laptop that is really close to a gaming rig, and can be one with a little effort, you found it!

Used it for couple of days. So far looks and works good. There are times when you feel that fan noise is too much, but mostly only during some update process in progress. Plus point for having an HDMI port for output, which is missing from most of the similar 2 in 1s.

    Clunky and unpleasant to use

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

It's pretty hard to pinpoint how I feel about this laptop. I am a power user coming off a 5 year old laptop, and I am not loving a lot of the design and usability choices that went into this Inspiron. I'll start with the pros of the laptop: ++VALUE. I purchased this for $650 (open box). For something in a compact form factor and with a kaby lake i7, that price is a steal. You'll be hard pressed to find something on paper as good as this. ++FEATURES. This laptop comes with a backlit keyboard, responsive touch screen, and a diverse array of ports. Full sized HDMI, SD slot, and USB-C. Awesome. Dell's lack of "courage" is working well for them. ++SIZE. This laptop weighs 3.5lbs, which is on par with a 13" macbook. It is a hair slimmer then the older ones, as well. Lightweight enough to carry around in a sleeve or in a bag, but a bit too heavy for "tablet" mode. Now, onto the things that I just do not like about this laptop, and the reasons I am returning it. --Design. Brushed aluminum finishes were great when they first debuted in 2009, but by now it is a bit stale. This laptop is the equivalent of a white wall. Not bad, but not at all inspired. --Power button. The design department thought the best place for the easy-to-press power button and volume rocker would be on the side, near the corner. I have not picked this up a single time without accidentally changing the volume or putting it to sleep. --Trackpad. Unlike the smooth glass on macbooks and most machines today, this one is actually textured with a fine, gritty finish. Clicking is clunky, and the cursor feels very imprecise for fine movements. I often found myself reaching over to the touchscreen to avoid using the trackpad. --Keyboard. I begrudgingly accept that the home/pgup/pgdn/end keys will be missing from most new laptops today, but the last straw was finding out that dell removed the context menu key from their keyboard. Looking at the huge, empty chassis, I can't help but think they would have room for one extra key there. --Display. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the display wins no awards. It is functional, but not as bright or accurate as other laptops out there. I wouldn't recommend this if your job is in multimedia or arts. --Bloatware. I'm sure this is the same for many laptops out there, but I wish manufacturers would stop shipping brand new laptops that are already filled with junk. It's very hard to tell what is needed for crucial updates, and what is just tracking and advertising garbage. All in all, this laptop is a great value and will surely make others happy, but the most basic issues with the trackpad, chassis design, and keyboard layout make it unusable to me. I couldn't recommend it to a friend in good faith.

works great, but beware the keyboard

I have really enjoyed the speed and versatility of this product. Unfortunately, the keyboard space bar is now broken due to "wear and tear" after just 2 months of use. I am not rough on my computer and the only time the space key might have been depressed more is during tablet use. The space bar now works inconsistently and is more depressed than the other keys. Tech support thought the lock on it is broken and it will cost me $149 to repair (wear and tear is not covered by warranty) it if they have the parts and it would take 7-10 days. Very disappointing.

    Intermittent and recurring system freezes

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this laptop at Costco and had a horrible experience. The first unit I bought was intermittently freezing, eventually showing a BSOD, but every time the errors were pointing to different OS components. I couldn't make any sense with the information capture in the system logs. I returned the item after a month and bought another one, exactly the same model (since I liked it), assuming the first one had some intermittent hardware issue. The second unit was even worse than the first one, showing exactly the same behavior but more often. I decided to give Dell a chance to help me out and spent 2h with their tech support that wasn't doing nothing else aside running their Dell diagnostics software and trying to convince me they were "fixing" the system. The machine passed all tests but keep freezing, no matter how you use it or what software you have installed or open. At the end of the troubleshooting session with Dell, the device froze up again and then I decided it was about time to give up and to return it to Costco. It's a nice machine, very light and powerful, with backlit keyboard and SSD disk, but PLEASE.... DO YOURSELF A FAVOR: DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP. It probably has some unknown project failure with its hardware or at drivers level. YOU DON'T DESERVE ALL THE FRUSTRATION I WENT THROUGH.

    Already looking for another computer

I have always used Dell laptops and have been consistently satisfied with all of my past machines. I am very careful with my laptops and they are always in a case if they aren't being used. After having it for about a month, I have had nothing but problems. Windows 10 consistently has update problems. Its automatic update takes 5 hours, and then by end of the update it decides it can't update and takes another 2 hours to "remove updates" (This is a Windows 10 problem and not directly the fault of the laptop but still highly inconvenient). I have issues 3-4 times a week with the Dell Hello Facial Recognition. I have to restart the computer to fix that issue. The speakers started making a static, cracking noise about 3 months after I got. Not a huge deal because I don't use my laptop that much for sound, but still annoying. And the biggest issue that sparked me to write this review, after having it for about 8 months, is the AC power adapter is no longer recognizable and wont charge my laptop. Whether it's a simple battery problem or not, I know there are probably solutions to this, but as a new laptop, I should not be having to deal with these issues- especially this many. Best Buy has been great and the Geek Squad did take a look at the computer a couple times for free, but the Windows 10 issues have not stopped. I gave this review 2 stars because I have always used Dell before and this laptop did work fantastic for about the first month I had it, but I am severely disappointed with this waste of money.

    Doesn't live up to specs

I was a bit disappointed in this Dell. The WiFi card was weak and slow. The startup times were slower than my 3 year old Lenovo i5. Google earth tended to hang almost every time I used it. I did like the "Hello" camera sign on system. The Full HD screen was relatively dim. I bought it on sale for $699. For a "mid-range" PC it is is OK. It doesn't perform as well as I had hoped and it is relegated to use as a spare, I went back to my 3 year ASUS which is faster and has a better display.

I opened the box and turned on the laptop. You have no idea how crazy the fan works and the laptop gets hot right away.. The only page I had open was google with internet explorer and I wonder why this much of noise is being made... SO disappointed only because of this. It is like turning on vacuum. I am returning it.
