Spectacular New Dell Entry in 2-in-1 16" Class

My new Dell Inspiron 16 7630 2-in-1 Touch Screen Convertible laptop is one of four Dell computers that now reside in my home, others include an All-in-One, a current release gaming rig, and the oldest being a Dell XPS 8300-5215NBK I purchased from Best Buy in 2011! That PC is clocking in at 12 years of age. Still running strong.
This is a review for the new Dell 16 7630, the aside was to share a bit of my familiarity with Dell computers and other hardware. My first impression of the Inspiron 16 7630 is this laptop is built exceptionally well to provide many years of uninterrupted service. The design is outstanding, minimum bezel around the IPS screen to complement a very nice keypad that I feel flows smoothly while typing.
One feature that stands out for me is the keyboard’s backlighting management, when not in use the lights will fade off and when you continue typing the backlit keys fade on, very cool. So much nicer (spelt convenient!) than having to manually control the keypad lighting. Kudos to Dell. Key stabilization is good on most keys. Hello Fingerprint sensor works well, Hello is always a big bonus for me. Large trackpad performs very well.
Most impressive 16” 2-in-1 laptop featuring the new “13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-13700H (24 MB cache, 14 cores, 20 threads, up to 5.00 GHz Turbo).” This machine is smoking, cold boot time averages about 9 seconds! My application system is quite loaded and includes starting up VPN, malware protection, virus system and firewall to mention just a few of the apps that can bog down the start time of PC’s and laptops. This is my second Gen 13 chip, solid CPU’s, highly efficient.
Construction:
- Sturdy aluminum construction
- Little deck flex
- Strong smooth operating 360 degrees hinges
Notes:
- Quad 2W speakers - two up-firing forward-facing speakers
- Dolby Atmos spatial audio
- 16GB LPDDR5 memory
- Samsung NVMe m.2 PM891 1TB SSD
- 16:10 1920x1200 display, hardware low blue light, 60hz
- 65 Watt power brick very light, USB-C connection (GOOD)
- Good I/O (Thunderbolt 4.0, HDMI 1.4)
- HDMI limited to 1080p but Thunderbolt can carry DisplayPort
- Wi-Fi 6E adapter
- Graphics Intel Iris Xe graphics - nice improvement over Intel UHD
- 1080p webcam and dual array microphone are adequate for video conferencing, better than other laptop cameras I have used
- No Bloatware – Thanks Dell!
Highly recommend the Inspiron 16 7630 for your daily driver, productivity, office/travel, student, any usage which benefits from long battery life, quick charging, and processing speed. The Dell 16 7630 must be in the top ranks of this laptop class.

After one week of use I'm really pleased with the Dell Inspiron performance, easily powering both work tasks and video streaming on a vibrant 16" HD screen with a thin, sleek housing.
In the box is the laptop and USB-C charging cord. Setup is simple plug and play, following the normal Windows setup workflow. After initial setup, I highly recommend checking for firmware and driver updates and allowing an hour of uninterrupted download time for everything to be installed.
As for the Dell Inspiron build, I find this to be geared towards general every day use, with the ability to run a heavy processing load with reduced performance, if required. The laptop boasts the 13th Gen Intel Evo i7 with 16 GB RAM, Intel Iris Xe Graphics card, 1 TB SSD powering a 16" touchscreen. The overall quality of the build materials and layout is five star. The housing feels sturdy with a 14"x10" footprint, and the hinges are strong enough to support the 16" screen, no matter what screen angle. The keyboard takes up 5.5" of the laptop base, with a front speaker bar in addition to speakers running the full length on either side of the keyboard.
One versatility perk on this build is that the hinges allow the screen to fold back into tablet mode. Tablet mode turns off the keyboard to eliminate accidental input and also points the "front" row of speakers towards the bottom of the screen, enhancing the directional sound while in tablet mode. Additional built in features are an embedded fingerprint reader in the power button, a full HD webcam, Bluetooth and wi-fi 6. Dell did a good job with leveraging the available space for peripheral ports while keeping the housing slim. The available ports are a SD card reader, USB-A 3.2, and headphone ports on one side and a HDMI, USB-A 3.2, and two USB-C thunderbolt 4 ports on the other side. Note that you lose one of the thunderbolt ports when charging.
The screen is a touchscreen surrounded by a nearly borderless frame that optimizes the gaming and movie streaming experience. Touchscreen sensitivity is stellar, with response being both accurate and responsive. The screen allows for full range of viewing angles, anti-glare so it can be viewed in bright light, and boasts fantastic color depth and richness. At 60 Hz refresh rate, the laptop will support gaming but gets choppy during graphic intensive scenes. The sound is good and has enough strength to fill a room however it does lack some sound depth, which is my experience from the majority of laptops.
Processing performance is fantastic for individual tasks, I have no issues with streaming, running excel macros, or using 3D printer software. I did find some lag when I tried to run heavier tasks such as streaming and rendering a 3D model. While streaming and multitasking, the audio would occasionally stutter at heavier loads such as running macros or slicing 3D files. In my opinion this level of performance is to be expected with the build type driving a large 16" screen so I didn't take off any stars for performance. The battery life of the laptop is fantastic (~3+ hours of streaming on the first charge).
Overall I find that this Inspiron build is fantastic for the average user running Microsoft Office tools, general administrative work, and audio or video streaming. The caveat is that sometimes the processor struggles to keep up with extreme multitasking and can give slight stutter to audio or longer load times for large workbooks.
