it started overheating about a year after purchase but I bought one of the fan which works fine. Two inch screen and the ability to use it as a “tablet” is nice

I bought this for its sleek and small design that I enjoyed at the time, and I like the backlight feature on the keys, making it easier to use in settings with less light. The fan of the computer heats up very quickly and requires me to use a chill pad that I don't like to use. It makes typing elevated and more difficult. I'm also four years older and would like something with a bigger screen.

Steal for the price, but a couple minor gripes.

I bought this at the very end of December 2019, at a local Best Buy, as it was on sale for $699 at the time. Since it's been several months, I figured I'd now give my thoughts on it. Overall, I like this computer a lot. The 360* screen (with auto-rotate) is very cool and fun-to-use, and is terrific if reading online articles, e-books, or webpages. The touchscreen, despite being a fingerprint magnet, provides a rich picture and deep colors. It is also quite accurate. The keyboard is quite comfortable, and has good key travel. The backlighting is good, but can be hard-to-see at times, since the white light almost "blends in" with the silver keys. Additionally, the fingerprint reader in the power button is super convenient, AND very accurate. I've never had recognition issues with it. Moving on, the battery life is outstanding; I've been able to get a full 8 hours off a single charge, even if not in power saving mode. It is also super fast and boots up in less than 30 seconds. Talk about convenience if you need to get things done! The SSD with Intel Optane provides a great computing experience, without lagging, even if heavily multitasking. However, my only complaints are: 1) The screen hinge has a bit of wobble. If you quickly tap the screen, the screen will slightly "bounce" and wobble for a bit. Not a major issue, but still an annoyance. 2) The touchpad click mechanism was VERY stiff when I first got it. So stiff, in fact, that it would hurt my fingers after using for some time. Ultimately, I resorted to taking off (yes, unscrewing) the bottom cover, unscrewing the touchpad and its retention brackets, and BENDING the metal bracket along the bottom of the touchpad to make it not require as much pressure to click. While it's now fine, I'm not too happy I had to take this thing apart (and modify it), so soon. Oh, and the bottom cover isn't exactly easy to remove or put back on; it is very easy to snap the plastic clips even if being slow and gentle, and then has to be realigned ever-so-perfectly to sit flush. 3) The single USB 3 port is on the right-hand side. I'd much prefer to have it on the left, as it can get in the way if you're using an external mouse, or have something plugged in that sticks out. 4) The speakers, while decent, sound "tinny" when turned up loud. So much for using to play music without headphones... 5) The screen automatically dims when on battery, even when the brightness control shows as being at max. I checked the BIOS, but cannot figure out if there is any way to change this. With these exceptions, for the price I paid, the specs are unbeatable and I would certainly recommend it if on sale. Otherwise, I wouldn't suggest spending $850 on this.

I have been using this machine for last five years. Absolutely wonderful machine with no hardware nor SW issues at all. HW quality, keyboard, the ports all work well.

Just bought it yesterday. Battery status said, "75% saying 1h and 30 left". It glitches when using the tablet mode keyboard. However, the pen feature is nice. And if you're a student like me you're able to take really good notes (esp. if you're using an ebook). Laptop is nice to look at.

      Brenda,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear that your computer's battery is not lasting as long as you hoped it would. We'd recommend the following tips to help extend the life of your battery:

      Change the Power Plan:

      1. On the notification area of the taskbar, right-click the Battery icon.
      2. On the options list, click Power Options.
      3. Select a power plan on the battery meter, such as Power Saver or Balanced. Windows 10 has a built in 'Battery Saver' mode that can be activated to extend your system's battery life. The Battery Saver mode will monitor and limit background activity and other features such as push notifications. You do have the option to enable or disable this mode within settings or within advanced Battery Saver settings, you can customize the mode to best suit your needs.

      a) Click on the Action Center icon in the taskbar and select the tile for Battery Saver.
      b) If running Cortana then type Battery Saver into the search box and select from the results.
Within the Battery Saver settings page, you will be able to turn on and off the feature and customize the feature to best meet your needs.
      c) Turn Battery Saver On or Off.
      d) Additional settings available via the Battery use and Battery saver settings links.
      e) Battery use shows further info on apps and their power usage.
      f) Battery Saver Settings screen allows you to customize further Battery Saver feature.

    Defective Dell Product

$850 laptop is not a cheap one, so it is expected to perform properly for home use. Bought this from BestBuy store and was fine for around 3-4 months. Then the problems started. The finger print reader will almost never work. Tried to reset my fingerprint multiple times, but that doesn't help either. Sometimes webpages will not open showing DNS error, while others will open as usual. Reboot the laptop and everything will work fine. Suddenly the internet will go off. Again reboot and everything is fine. Sometimes if I close the laptop lid it will completely shut down instead of going into hibernation mode. All the work done last night is gone. It seems, I made the worst choise switching to Dell from Lenovo.
