The laptop works fine. One thing I don’t like is that the power supply doesn’t use USB-C, but a barrel (round) connector instead.

Laptops have seemed to make a comeback in recent years. The emergence of tablet computing looked like a clear threat to the laptop PC market, but overall, served only as a motivation for further innovation in this category. Many are learning that a laptop is much more useful at home than a tablet, and the workplace speaks for itself. The Dell 16 Plus looks to fit the bill by offering a large screen, full-sized keyboard, big trackpad, and thunderbolt ports wrapped in a tidy package. Opening the box, my first impression was that it is much more attractive than expected. It’s much sleeker than the images would indicate, and the silver finish is very consistent and gives the appearance of a unibody construction. It doesn’t have that slick, ultra-premium look, but it looks clean and slightly elegant. The screen is practically edge-to-edge, and the full-sized keyboard is welcome. The keys are a little smaller than on other laptops I have but first feel gives me some sense of comfort (we will see). The number keypad has even smaller keys than the rest of the keyboard – we will see if this becomes an issue. Also on the keypad is a fingerprint sensor key in the upper right corner – looks like Windows Hello fingerprint style. Then, there’s the trackpad – yes, that trackpad! It’s humungous by my standards. The biggest one I’ve ever had on a laptop. No need to turn up your mouse speed on this one! As for ports, you have a couple of USB-Cs, an HDMI, a USB-A, and the all-important headset jack. Not going to lie, I was giddy to see the USB-A, the full-sized HDMI, and the headphone jack. The fingerprint key doubles as a power button. After turning the Dell 16 Plus on, I was of course greeted by a slew of questionnaires and updates. Don’t get it twisted, either. Once you finish the initial Windows 11 initial start updates, you have a plethora of hardware, firmware, and software updates waiting for you in Windows Update. One thing Windows Update will do for you out of the gate: teach you how your laptop responds to workload. This laptop has an AMD Ryzen AI 750 chip. I will say this baby started the fan blowout right off the bat. The ventilation is standard bottom intake with the exit and the rear of the base, at the base of the LCD panel. I’m a little torn on whether I prefer a side exit versus the rear exit, but one advantage to the rear exit is there are no ports located where the heat is being funneled. How loud is it? Just keep in mind that you will have noticeable noise if you push this thing. Actually, I rarely had early use moments without the fan constantly on. Most of this time was accompanied by updates, mind you, but it’s notable this thing has an active fan, which is surprising considering the amount of RAM (32GB) and supposed processor efficiency. Typing on the keyboard took a little getting used to. The smaller keys were immediately noticeable, and it took a while to really feel comfortable. The keys were also a little stiff for my liking. I think typing is all about feel. This may be fine for others, but just didn’t quite fit me. The trackpad, although big, could use some work on the responsiveness side. It’s not sluggish, but inconsistent. It can be overly sensitive, it seems, and jump on occasion rather than move smoothly. Once again, this could be personal preference or just getting used to a new machine. The Dell 16 Plus obviously handles lightweight tasks very well – easily handling emails, web surfing, productivity software, etc. like a champ, and all on nice 16 inch screen. It also handles light gaming and media editing and creating without any issue. I think this laptop will easily serve an intermediate to power user. It doesn’t have a lot of bloatware (albeit McAfee comes preinstall – yuk), has a lot of screen real estate, a full-sized keyboard, and one of the biggest trackpads I’ve seen. I think this fits a power user perfectly or even a developer. Definitely worth a look.

I like the touch screen but don't like the mouse pad. The right and left buttons aren't as responsive or it clicks harder. My old Toshiba mouse pad was better.
