ARM Wrestling
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is built so nice. Great feel. Light weight. Beautiful screen. Excellent battery life. So why am I wrestling with this review? For daily tasks, entertainment, browsing and basic tasks this is a fantastic laptop. Add in the "built in AI" capabilities with Copilot and this feels like a winner. This is the Microsoft answer to high end Chromebooks. The ARM processor gives you hours and hours of sipping the power. So why am I struggling with my review? This is the 3rd attempt to get ARM processors in laptops. And they have done a fantastic job with the Snapdragon X Elite. But ARM Windows still has compatibility issues even with Windows built in apps like Snipping Tool takes forever to open and then does not function right. App compatibility in general is 50/50. Google Drive does not work. OneDrive works great, it is a MS product though. Games and software I have attempted to load are 50/50 to install and 50/50 to run on top of that. The video and processor is not powerful enough except to run at low graphics. I have had quite a few applications that work suddenly become unresponsive. For Linux heads, I am still looking for a ARM distro that is not extremely limited. I have been playing with Linux Mint LMDE 6 (ARM). There are 2 USB type C ports. That is it. You can charge over either. Unfortunately a HDMI dongle was not included like in my larger XPS. The dongle from my larger XPS works with this machine and most monitors or TVs. You can also use a USB hub/dock with no issue. The size of any monitor you attach to may cause performance issues. My ultrawide monitor is not detected by this machine with the hub/dongle I use with my other laptops (work and personal). This is my quick trip laptop. The touch screen is quite, maybe overly, responsive. And a excellent fingerprint magnet! There is 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of memory. Neither appears to be upgradeable. Memory reports back as a single slot. The SSD may be upgradeable, but it reports as fixed hard drive. The keyboard is backlit, you will need to mess with bios setting (F2 during boot then System Configuration) to keep the keyboard backlight on and determine if the capacitive buttons are function keys or multimedia keys by default. This can be controlled using the fn key to switch between function and multimedia. The power button is hidden next to the backspace key. Touch typing is a challenge, the keyboard is very flat with very little key travel to activate the press. It is a bit hard to feel the separation between the keys. Copilot works really well, but is still quite limited. Being able to generate AI responses, even while offline is a nice addition, but not a deal breaker or maker in my mind. In all honesty, AI seems to be not much more than a chatbot in front of a web search engine at this point. Being able to create images is nice and can be fun, but has limited uses in real world application. Being able to expand on a search or ask for a way to present an idea is helpful. With this being ARM I am surprised there is not a cellular option. I just use the hotspot on my phone if I need internets. Another thing that surprised me, the hinge on the screen does not flip completely back to be in a tablet type mode. Overall I really like this laptop. I really want to love it. It is great just grabbing and taking with you somewhere like a doctors visit where you will be waiting a long time or on a train ride. It is so lightweight and takes up about the same room as a tablet in a backpack. This would also be great for a student for use at college. My biggest gripe is an oldie but goodie. ARM compatibility. But it is getting better.

Not a solution for audio and video production.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm giving 2 stars for battery life. If your workflow involves any audio or video production I'd steer clear of any Windows ARM based machine until more delevopers are on board. I could not install any audio applications on this machine, including Ableton Live, Reason 12, or Bitwig Studio. The problem is the drivers. They need to be rewritten for ARM. I the end I returned this and picked up the other XPS with Intel lunar lake chipset. Battery life is just as good and full compatibility.

Very premium looking laptop for productivity.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The XPS 13 with Snapdragon X Elite is a remarkably stylish laptop. Everything about it screams “modern” and “premium.” The seamless trackpad is eye catching and only took a day or two to get used to. The flat, blocky keys are very clean looking and comfortable enough to type on. The buttonless, digital function row is also very clean and modern looking. I don’t typically hit these buttons from muscle memory anyway, so I had no issues glancing down at the keyboard to press them. The laptop body is a well constructed slab of metal. Again, simplicity and modernity are the driving force behind the aesthetic. The screen is extremely vivid, and the colors are nice and saturated. The laptop comes with both facial recognition and a touch sensor. The touch sensor (and power button) are somewhat “hidden.” It’s the slightly recessed, blank rectangle to the right of the “backspace” key. There is no iconography to identify this. I had to Google to figure it out. The port selection on this laptop is pretty paltry with just two USB-C ports on the entire laptop. There is no micro-SD slot for storage expansion, and the laptop comes with a disappointing 480GB drive (475GB usable). I do a lot of graphic design work, and this frankly isn’t enough space. I’m going to be relying heavily on external drives and cloud storage. Battery life was impressive, but it was not as impressive as I was expecting. In my experience, the battery will last your full work day fairly easily (8-10 hours with moderate use). Beyond that though . . . I was under the impression that the Snapdragon processor would allow for multi-day battery life. This wasn’t the case for me. The battery life is sufficient enough that I would have no concerns about getting through a presentation if I forgot my charger at home. The battery life is not sufficient enough that I wouldn’t be concerned if I had to run out of town for an overnight trip and forgot my charger at home. In terms of software, I had no significant issues with compatibility. The biggest issue I had was remembering to select the ARM option when it was available. Legacy, Intel based software seemed to run just fine. I didn’t notice any lag or other issues. Copilot and the other AI functions feel rather gimmicky right now. I had it assist me with a drawing of a blue cat playing with a red ball of yarn in Paint. First, Paint wouldn't be my first choice for making something like this. I'd much rather use Illustrator. Second, it DID successfully create my image, but it took a fair amount of adjusting with the creativity slider to get it to work. It defaulted to the most extreme range of the creativity slider and generated a picture that ignored my scrawled reference drawing completely. The cat was facing the wrong direction, and the red ball of "yarn" was replaced with something that looked like a rubber ball on the opposite side of the screen. Reducing the creativity resulted in it eventually following the general contour of my scrawl to generate a cat facing the correct direction with something that resembled yarn. I can see this feature having some merit if you don't have access to a clipart library, don't have time / skill to draw something properly yourself, and you just need a quick image to use on a newsletter or something. I didn’t even bother trying to install games on this. With the rather paltry storage, there didn’t seem to be much point. This laptop clearly wasn’t designed for gaming. It is an excellent productivity laptop though and handles word processing, web browsing, and photo editing without any issues.
