Amazingly small for the power
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a very sleek, slimmed down computer. I would say it’s barely bigger than my 10 inch tablet. It also pretty light and you can tell they spent a lot of time on the aesthetics of this laptop. It does look really good. As for functionality it hits all the main points for a basic work or school computer. The power wasn’t the highest and I put a few steam games on it just to test it. You’re not really going to push the envelope with this one, but that’s not really what its designed for. On the other hand, every game got up and running so it can let you play nearly everything, even if its not at the highest settings. This doesn’t have many connections, so if you have a lot you want to plug into it, you’re going to need to invest in a docking station. I have a dell 90w docking station that I used with another laptop and it worked perfectly. This only has 2 usb-c ports, so compatibility may be a bit irritating for you if you have only older accessories. It does come with a converter that allows you to plug usb-a devices into the usb-c slot, but only one adapter so only one of those accessories at a time unless you have a dock or multi-port device of some sort. It also doesn’t have any audio plugs, but it does come with an adapter for headphones that plugs into the usb-s. I tried it quickly and it does work, but I mostly just connected it to a Bluetooth speaker when I wanted better sound. If you’re going to use this device you really just need to invest in Bluetooth and other wireless devices. The screen is super nice with really clear images. It’s a touchscreen as well which is nice, but I am a bit paranoid about scratches or other issues damaging the screen if it’s a touchscreen. I haven’t looked into it more, but I kind of wonder if we can get a screen protector for this like you would a tablet or a phone. Watching movies look really good even if it is a smaller screen. It does come with the standard Dell bloatware, which you can keep or strip out depending on your preference. I also hate how Windows requires you to log into a Microsoft account to set up the computer, but that’s a Microsoft issue not a Dell one, so no points off for that. Charging is a bit annoying. It works fine with the built in charger, with my generic 100w charger and anything designed for over 60w of output. However, if you plug it into a 40w charger it won’t even let it try to charge. I’ve had other laptops where it gives a warning that its slowing the charge, that its cutting laptop usage, whatever; but at least it would let it charge. That way if you were traveling and the only option was a sub-optimal charger, you could let it sit for a long time and at least have your device up and running overnight or something. With this it doesn’t even try to charge, so don’t count on a generic phone charger being able to help out with this laptop in a pinch. My biggest gripe with this computer is their keyboard and trackpad. In order to have the highest level of aesthetics they’ve removed the trackpad’s visual aspect. Its still there in the big blank bar under the keyboard, but you just can’t see it. You can still run your fingers along it to move the mouse and you can press down to click on the buttons, but it blends in really well to the rest of the laptop. Visually this is really cool, functionally it’s a pain. If you’re using the trackpad for any substantial amount of time, you’re fingers drift from it very easily. Sometimes you think your fingers are in the right spot, but you’ve gone too far to the right and it won’t click. Or you think you’re moving the mouse, but you run out of trackpad and you have to suddenly move your hand to the side to start over and lose your place. If you’re typing and suddenly want to move the mouse, you sometime miss the trackpad all together. The previous separated design made a great tactile differentiation that made it much easier to use. This might not matter nearly as much if you use the touch screen a lot, but for me its more occasionally so I’d like the touch pad to be better. They also changed the look and feel of the keyboard a little bit. It’s not a style that is terribly revolutionary and it looks good, but again it takes away from the functionality. The keyboard seems to be just a little bit off from the standard keyboard setup. As a result, I’m constantly hitting wrong keys. Maybe kids now days don’t really type without looking at their fingers or rely on autocorrect so much that doesn’t matter to them, but its driving me crazy. I’ll admit both of these things are something I’m starting to get used to and I am sure over time I’ll adjust to it enough that I won’t even notice it anymore. Overall a really great slim, good looking laptop with a nice quality touchscreen. It has a few drawbacks here and there but on the whole I’d still recommend it to others.

Excellent, except for the trackpad
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really miss my XPS laptop. It was the first or second year that Dell released an XPS laptop, and it was small and light and awesome. Quiet, got a little hot, but otherwise a great laptop that years later has been handed down and is still in use. Whoever said that ultrabooks that couldn't be upgraded would be terrible after a couple of years didn't see it coming. Now ultrabooks are old hat, and the XPS has become far less exciting. So Dell went and got rid of the trackpad and released the XPS Plus…and while this is a great laptop, there are some familiar carryovers with my early generation XPS that are strikingly familiar. The keyboard was pretty uncomfortable when I first started using it, and after a very short period I've become accustomed to (and honestly, am quite enjoying) the typing experience. The keys are squared off, not even the slightest bit rounded on the corners, but have an almost unnoticeable depression in the center for your fingertips to settle into. There is a suprising amount of key travel, maybe even more than previous generations, but maintains the same mostly quiet sound profile. This keyboard also includes a capacitive function row, which is mostly fine, but I don't love that the escape and delete keys--for me, the most frequently used in the row--are not physical. While we're talking about the keyboard, it's worth mentioning the trackpad. I love the look of this 'edgeless' trackpad, but the execution isn't great. Dell has implemented a vibration motor below the trackpad in place of a physical click, which I support, but the responsiveness of the motor is a little off. Out of the box, it's entirely too sensitive, which you can adjust a little in the settings, but not enough. Even then, I find the "down" click to be often times accidental and immediate, and the "up" click to be delayed for a full second after my finger has left the surface. When typing, there are oftentimes accidental triggering of the touchpad. This inconsistency makes it hard to adjust to. The monitor is excellent. Sufficiently bright, high resolution, and wonderfully vibrant. It's a touch screen, if you're into that, but I'm not. The speakers are also very excellent, another suprise for a device of this size. As a media device, the XPS Plus is awesome. As a 2-in-1 device (which this isn't--but my first XPS was), it would be even more compelling as a way to consume entertainment. Performance is what you'd expect with an 13th generation Intel i7 processor and 32GB of RAM. I've used a few Dell devices recently with AMD processors and never really had a great experience with them… Intel is where it's at when it comes to Dell laptops. That said, just like my first XPS, the bottom of this thing can get toasty--almost too toasty to comfortably set it on your lap. This device is a conundrum for me. Retail price is $1949, which is not cheap. From a performance perspective--processor, RAM, speakers, screen, I'm comfortable with it. Add in some of the inconsistencies with the touchpad and it becomes a bit more difficult to recommend. The keyboard is good, and I suppose if you're laying in bed with this propped up on your knees while typing (like I am as I write this review), you can easily avoid accidental touchpad activation. In a regular lap- or desk-top setting, it would take some time for me to get used to holding my hands differently, floating above the keyboard, while typing. And the touchpad is very good and responsive, but a little buggy. Maybe that's fixed with a software update. All that said, I still REALLY like this computer. The build quality is excellent--it FEELS expensive and looks it as well. The design of the borderless trackpad is very modern, minimalistic and futuristic looking. Ports are limited to just two USB-C ports, but that's about par for the course when it comes to premium ultrabooks. I don't know if I could use it for long sessions without a wireless mouse (to avoid the trackpad bugginess), but otherwise there isn't a lot to complain about here.
