The most disappointing Dell to date
||Posted . Owned for more than 2 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have resolved that this will be my last Dell ever. I used to stand by them; however, this one has taken the cake with despair and frustration. 1) When I first set up the computer, it did not prompt to secure a "BitLocker key". Unfortunately, with the volume of work I had, it kicked in and I had to format the entire drive. This should be a HARD PROMPT during setup to have the buyer secure the key on the Microsoft website. 2) It has just died now, little over two years of ownership. Having to get another drive. I did not use it daily, and I am just doing basic college student stuff.

Posted .Hello Conley, We're sorry to hear that you had issues with your computer after having it for just a couple of months. If you experience any additonal errors when you get your computer back we'd recommend the following:
1. At the desktop, click the Search the web and Windows box and type "problem reports".
2. Select View all problem reports to view a list of errors that have occurred on your computer and possible solutions for them, such as updating drivers, flashing your system BIOS, or checking for updates to the software.
3. Under the Source column, look for Windows and under Summary, look for Shut down unexpectedly.
4. Right-click the line item and select Check for a solution.

So Far So Good
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It runs well, if it goes to sleep its easy to wake up...so far. We will see if this is all true in a year. The previous one a Dell Mini, lasted 2 yrs before it crapped out, sooo very disappointed. If this one goes past that then it should make it 5 yrs or more. Will update then if they let me :))

Really Fast, Nice Design!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a really fast computer for office and file intensive operations. I mean really, really fast. This pc comes with the Optane disk cache module instead of a separate video card. The latest iteration of Intel I7-7700 comes with the HD 620 video core, which is a big improvement over past generations and puts it close to the Nvidia 1050 in graphics performance. For gaming, much easier to add the video card of your choice later than trying to wedge in the Optane module. The real speed comes from the Optane disk cache; for many operations it's faster than an SSD. Bootup is extremely quick, and file operations are extremely fast. The Optane cache acts like a non-volatile (retains memory on power down) ultra high speed 16GB store between memory and the hard disk. I was quite surprised that it outperformed a older, otherwise similar system with an SSD drive for video editing. The chassis is the same width and height as previous XPS systems, but is about 3" less deep. The internals are a mechanical marvel of compact design and in spite of two fans it's exceptionally quiet. 16GB is about the minimum memory these days for a multitasking power workstation, and it's nice that it's supplied in two dimms, not four, leaving two empty dimm slots for expansion. Externally, there are 10 usb ports (two 2.0, the rest 3.0 or 3.1) and one USB C port. Video is only either hdmi or display port, which is fine for newer monitors. If you have an older monitor, pick up a hdmi-DVI cable (about $5-$10). The power supply is a 460 watt supply with enough reserve to be sufficient for anything but the highest performance gaming video cards. A Nvidia 1060 or 1070 should be fine. Setup was super easy and fast. Initial boot was really fast, go through the usual question round from Microsoft, then on to the update round. The updates took very little time, largely due to the apparent speed of the disk. I would be surprised if it took 15 min from initial power on to usable computer. One really nice thing is the absence of crapware. Aside from Microsoft Office 30 day trial, there is a one-year McAfee LiveSafe subscription and Power2Go DVD playing/burning software. And the Dell update and support stuff, but that's about it. The only negatives are the placement of the frontside USB ports right above the dvd drive as if they were really intended only for temporary devices, like a backup drive or a USB stick. The DVD drive itself is a laptop style drive, very thin and no motorized eject. One last irritation is that you must make your own system restore backup; this requires a minimum 16GB USB memory stick (yes, memory stick, you can't create restore DVDs). These are minor annoyances with a truly fine system. All in all, a well constructed, really fast office workstation capable compute engine that can be made gamer ready easily. Recommended!

Glad I Purchased a Dell PC
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My first Dell PC. My old PC died a few months ago and I have been looking. Before now I always used another brand PC but the XPS8920 configuration caught my attention. Had all the specs I wanted save two the SSD drive and video card. Been watching the price and all the buying keys came together.
