Window’s Media Player classifies Melee’s Devils & Angels as alternative. I couldn’t agree more; it’s an alternative to the mindless drivel that is being released at record speeds these days. Devils & Angels is pop with out being bubblegum. They are the Jonas Brothers for adults. They have a sound that is reminiscent of bands from the 80’s, 90’s and today. They sound familiar while maintaining their uniqueness. You constantly ask yourself who they remind you of but can never quite put your finger on it. They remind me of the bands I loved when I was younger, yet my teenage sons hear shades of bands from today. They are part Toto, part Asia, part Bad English, part Boys Like Girls, Part Plain White T’s and all Melee. Finally, a band able to span the generation gap. Although the word melee is defined as a disorganized and confused crowd, there is nothing disorganized about this talented group of young men. With the exception of their cover of Hall & Oates’ You Make My Dreams, every song is an original written by band members Chris Cron and Ricky Sans and arranged by all four band members. The lyrics aren’t preachy but they are a refreshing break from the suggestive, harsh and repetitive lyrics of most pop songs released lately. I enjoyed every song on the album but must admit my favorites are Frequently Baby (She’s a Teenage Maniac) and You Got. And while I normally cannot stand remakes of favorite songs from the past, I have to say they did a remarkable job on You Make My Dreams. If you grew up in the 80’s and 90’s you owe it to yourself to pick up this cd. If you are tired of the sexually suggestive, meaningless, repetitive drivel found in most pop songs today, you owe it to yourself to pick up this cd. If you are tired of the screeching and yelling of bands that really can’t carry a tune and like a good refreshing toe tapping, head bobbing, sing along, feel good pop song, you owe it to yourself to pick up this cd. You owe it to yourself to pick up this cd period.

"Devils and Angels" is pure heaven

It is increasingly rare for a band to come along that defies labels. It is even rarer for a band to genuinely transcend all labels because they all apply. This is the case for Melee. Upon first listen, there is that lingering thought of "who do they remind me of?" This is a question easily answered, but that answer changes with each song on the CD. First, great 90's bands come to mind like Goo Goo Dolls, Maroon 5 and Ben Folds. After a few songs, they begin to remind you of all those bands and then some: some Coldplay, some Night Ranger and even some Reo Speedwagon. Even though you can hear nods towards all these bands, you quickly realize that Melee has a sound that unique to them. They skillfully combine post punk, indie rock and pop into an unique sound that will leave you wanting more. Each song combines carefully worded lyrics with beautifully crafted melodies. Melee skillfully blends guitar riffs with piano melodies. Their music has all the subtle nuisances that make true indie rock such a listening pleasure. With each time you listen to a song, you hear something new. The songs, like the lyrics, have depth and layers that make them both intriguing and contagious. Each and every song on this CD is a song you will want to listen to over and over, sing out loud with and even do a little car dancing. I highly recommend it.

    A Band to Watch

I just recently discovered Melee and I'm hooked! These boys know their stuff! They write their own music, which is pretty rare these days, and I really enjoyed every track on Devils & Angels. There were no tracks that were boring or seemed out of place. My favorite track is You Got, which reminds me of Maroon 5, but the lead singer of Melee has a better voice, in my opinion. And the cover of Hall & Oates' You Make My Dreams is smokin', better than the original! If you like music that makes you feel good, not sleepy or angry, check out Devils & Angels by Melee.

    Where have they been?

I was introduced to this CD as a rock group, and with the CD titled Devils & Angels, I thought it would be heavy metal. But it is not! This is their debut album for Warner Bros, and this CD is very enjoyable & very danceable! Their sound reminds me of Green Day. My favorite song is Built to Last the first on the CD. These songs have a great pop beat, & you can easily sing along with them. The songs are about relationships and real life, and are very relatable. My question is: Where have they been all my life?

All the best elements of Five for Fighting, Keane and Jacks Manequin meet to form Melee. Melee is able to have a piano take solos unlike most bands today. The bonus cover of You Make My Dreams Come True rivals the original. It’s fun and reintroduces a classic 80’s without going the way of 'punking' it up. This is a great CD to listen to at work and in the car during those stressful moments. Highly recommend to those looking for truly talented musicians.

loving life with this cd! I put it under my pillow one night to keep it away from my little girls! they would not go to sleep without listening to it "one more time"! I'm happy to have found a band that is not crass and is suitable to listen to with my kids... Melee should feel proud to not only put out great music but music that crosses generations! well done, I hope to hear more from this band soon.

This is a great record, one you will find yourself singing along to -- and singing the songs after you've listened to it. I often find myself humming a tune without even realizing I'm doing it - that's a good sign. Very catchy songs and the slower ballads are cool too. I highly recommend this record.
