Great platformer
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Solid Nintendo platforming gameplay as always. Highly recommended if you like challenging platforming and great level design, though the addition of funky mode means that even beginners will have a great time as well.

Great game, on a great platform
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Easy to get started, and even easier for younger players with Funky Mode. All the classic elements of Donkey Kong Country that you remember, with stunning graphics for the modern age.

Fun platforming, not a big upgrade
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The original game on Wii U was challenging and fun, and you'll be getting the same experience with this Switch port. I never finished the game originally on Wii U, but I am having an easier and more fun time beating the game for Switch. The controls are tight, the stages are well created and planned, and the gameplay is varied. No major upgrades, but it's still a very well made game.

2D platforming at its finest
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you didn’t get this on the Wii U, I highly recommend it. The level design, music, and charm of this game are outstanding. Funky has helped my young son play co-op with me, so that’s a nice added feature, as well.

Great platformer, but not designed for beginners
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I finally picked up a copy of DKC: Tropical Freeze after enough friends who played the Wii U version convinced me to give it another try. I will say Retro Studios, the developer, continues to do an excellent job at making everything in the game worlds feel connected—there is basically never a random floating platform; everything is connected to something, and that can make it easier to figure out what will do what. On the other hand, some of the things I was able to pick up on, as someone more experienced with Donkey Kong Country games, and 2D platformers in general, were not as obvious to less experienced games I tried to play with in co-op mode. I do know the Switch version has the new “Funky Mode”, which is essentially an easy mode that lets you bypass a lot of challenges in levels, but 1) I feel like removing the challenge takes a lot of the fun out for me, personally, and 2) that doesn't help with things like people forgetting you need to hold ZL/ZR while you're grabbing a vine. If you are less experienced with 2D platformers, it may make sense to go with something like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe; if you already enjoy 2D platformers, or Donkey Kong Country in particular, then this is an excellent entry in the series that improves on 2010's Donkey Kong Country Returns in pretty much every way.

Fun, nostalgic, difficult
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game provides an enjoyable ride of nostalgia enhanced by today's graphics and game-play mechanics. It is frustratingly difficult at times and there's been multiple instances where I've had to set the game down for the day after being destroyed over and over in certain boss fights. I guess for some people that's a good thing, but it's what keeps me from giving it 5 stars.

Good Old DK
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Donkey Kong country remains a tough as nails platformer, and is all the better for it. You will die a lot but nothing beats the feeling of finally getting through what seemed to be an unbeatable level.

Best 2D platformer in generations
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I tend to think that Nintendo platformers are in a league of their own, and that the newer (post-Gamecube) versions have not lived up to the heights of the 90s Nintendo hits. Tropical Freeze (which I missed on Wii U) is the best Nintendo 2D platformer (and therefore the best in the genre) since the 90s, either Yoshi’s Island or DKC2 depending on your taste, because of the inventive and challenging level design. Definitely a big step up from its predecessor, DKC Returns (originally on Wii). If you have a Switch, love 90s Nintendo 2D platformers, and haven’t played this yet, you should absolutely check it out.

Fun game but HARD
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I grew up with Donkey Kong and Mario games and have always loved them. This game is fun, but it's really difficult (at least to me!). I recently purchased Mario Brothers U Deluxe, and I like how it starts out easy and gets progressively harder. This game seems hard from the start. But again, it's fun, so if you're up for a challenge, get this game!
