This game is very broad, but not very deep. . .
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.OVERVIEW: I wanted to like this game, and put in about 10+ hours rising to level 6 characters. However, playing the game seemed more a like a chore. . .albeit a very nice looking and sounding chore. It is not an overly difficult game, but the pacing and structure were not for me. The graphics and mechanics themselves of the game are all VERY good, but derivative of past Bioware and bits and pieces of other franchises (i.e., quests, skill trees, crafting, semi open world, etc.). The couple of elements that could be called original are Power and Influence points. These are earned as you play the game, with Power points being used to open new quest lines and Influence to obtain perks. None of this is not a bad thing, but I want to make clear that is not entering into anything inventive that changes how you might progress in the game such as Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis system. Overall, I would still recommend this game, but because I have a long history of playing games with storylines and mechanics I more prefer, it really wasn’t for me. GRAPHICS: Good graphics and they do not limit gameplay at all. However, they are not photo realistic by any stretch of the imagination. There were a couple of instances where the camera angle became blocked and did disrupt combat a bit. Some of the magic animations can be considered overbearing at times. Although the scenery changes throughout the areas you play in the game, it still always felt the same and it never really changed the mood of the game. I constantly had to refer to the map to know where I was at as everything just kind of melds together when playing. GAMEPLAY: It was easy enough to move around, talk to characters, and traverse menu systems covering everything from skills to inventory. However, it is never really explained to the player how all the pieces work, and they don’t necessarily fit together neatly. It was as though someone said, “We need an inventory system” and went and built an inventory system. Then someone said, “We need a leveling and skills system” and went and built that. To manage any of these things you have to pause and stop playing the game and figure it all out. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not very complicated, but it also isn’t at all organic. It takes about 2 hours to get a good feel for combat, which varies depending on your play style. In most cases you can let your party members deal with things themselves, but I did find it necessary at times to force one to take a healing potion. All you have to do is keep your character safe and use your abilities and skills to get past the battle in real time. That is the first style of combat. The later style is to pause the game and take a tactical approach to combat where you assign attacks to each party member. In some cases you may take a blended approach, such as setting up an initial attack and then playing out real time. Regardless, in several hours of gameplay I have found little enjoyment in either combat systems. In most cases, the game throws 3-6 enemies at you. You either can beat them or you can’t, but in my travels, except for a couple of areas it seems to keep the enemy levels in parity with your own. I found it boring. I mentioned about the game not feeling organic. That is a nebulous term, but what I am trying to get at is that it all feels very mechanical. Although open world in sense, you are still confined to a zone a time until another opens up, and you can’t just run here and there as you are funneled through ravines and gullies and roads. The most mechanical feature of the game that really takes you out of the setting is the search function. You basically push your joystick controller down to “ping” and it actually makes a pinging sound and sends out a graphical circle that will highlight any objects you can interact with. Basically, if you are so inclined, you run around “pinging” like sonar looking for loot and crafting regents. You have actually a radar in the lower corner that shows red dots when enemies are near as well. There is also no environmental interaction. Your characters are not affected by the weather at all. They don’t get hungry. They can as far as I can tell carry as much as they can find. Again, feels very mechanical. Finally, your character is presented in a 3rd person, over the shoulder style typical of many RPGs and Action Adventure games (e.g., Assassins Creed). However, there is a group of 3 companions directly behind you through most of the game, but you would never know they are there unless in combat or one makes a comment to another, often a joke or reference to an event. I think the comments are there to just remind you that you have companions. That perspective is what I prefer in most games, such as Dark Souls, where I am given a sense of peripheral vision. It is really unnecessary as you have the radar showing where enemies are at, and although you can fall from heights, it really is not an issue when playing. STORY AND OVERALL GAME STRUCTURE For me, this was the weak spot. You can tell when playing that the game makers put an incredible back story into the game. There are warring cultures, such as the Templars and the Mages. There is deep history. If you are into deep stories and histories and legends, you may love this game, but you have to talk to everyone, read everything, etc. I did not like how it introduces you to this history. I prefer games that grow organically and introduce the player to backstory through gameplay. The Souls games do this very well or even something like Grand Theft Auto or the Last of Us. The narrative of this game is VERY weak. The player is thrust into a world, given some background, but within an hour that player is essentially leading an inquisition and running the show. I just couldn’t get my mind around that. MINOR SPOILER: Basically your character has the ability to close rifts that are opening and allowing demons into the world. That’s it. That drives the entire premise of the game. Go around, close rifts, and try to save the day. It builds as it goes along and blanks are filled in, but I was not feeling the least bit connected to my character. Why couldn’t they have put just a bit more into the beginning to give your character some background like in the first Dragon Age or a game like Guild Wars 2. A few hours of questing to give my character a personality would have made a lot of difference to me. From a structural perspective, the game is confusing with the very mechanical aspects I mentioned earlier. There are a ton of quests and a huge land to explore. It is not clear what quests you should be focused on. Should I just go and do story quests or do all the little side quests? As you move through the world, you can easily stumble into a harder area with beasts many levels higher than you, but there is no indication that you are in those areas. Case in point, when level 5 or so, I had a camp and hadn’t fought anything nearby that was challenging. Less than 10 seconds from that camp is a valley with immature drakes and a big dragon. You die if you try to fight. There are guards all over your camp. No one could stop me and say, “Hey don’t go down there are big dragons there?” CONCLUSION Dragon Age Inquisition is not a bad game, and I have no reservations recommending it. Depending on your expectations going in and what you like in an action RPG, this may be the game for you. Based on other reviews, that seems to be the case for many. However, if you are expecting an action driven experience, easily accessible back story, a unique setting and quest lines you have not seen in an RPG before (ok some of the quests are unique, but have done better in other RPGs), original gameplay elements, or a sense of mood, this is probably not the game for you.
