The only major differences are this: you can see the controllers headlight through the touch pad, now making it more useless than ever, and the battery lasts slightly longer, but you still need to charge these every day.

Very good addition to the PS4

So it was a bit frustrating. Turns out there was nothing wrong with it, it was the PS4 itself that was defective. After I exchanged the system this controller worked like a charm.
